hi, i havent heard this song before, only when gary cherone done part of it at the tribute concert so basically i was just wondering is the song actually any good |
juls 07.10.2004 18:35 |
Hi! Well, Mustapha is interesting - sounds quite arabic and is quite funny. Not a hit-single - although even released as single in Germany I think. Give it a listen, sure no disappointment. The lyrics are weird. Good guitar on it. Towards the end the song becomes a bit more heavy. Worth an ear. The whole "Jazz" album (Mustapha is the first one on it) is a IMO very good, all moods again, and some well-known songs on it (Bicycle Race, Don't stop me now), two softer ones (Jealousy, In only seven days), hard rock (Dead on time), and so on... One of my favorite albums definately. |
Albyboy 07.10.2004 18:44 |
Agree with Juls (as usual) even if "Jazz" is not one of my favs... I still can't say why they released it as a single in Germany... By the way, Juls, take my MSN account, if you want... I'll add yours, OK? Nice to talk with U :-) Albyboy |

Brilliant song. I love how it suddenly goes from mono to stereo and starts rockin' :) |

It means nothing. |

According to a certain Queenzone poll I love to plug, Mustapha is one of four Queen songs that have the widest range of opinion between Queen fans. Roger wrote the other three songs with wide ranges of opinion between Queen fans. After opening the below link, enlarge it to 100% and pan to view the bottom right graph. link |

In case anyone cares, I suppose I should explain what the middle quartile range is. The middle quartile represents the votes between the 25th and 75th percentile. In the case of Mustapha, the rating range was just below 6. On a scale of 0 to 10, one quarter of Queen fans rated Mustapha as a 3 or lower while one quarter rated it as a 9 or higher. Hence the middle quartile range is 9 - 3 = 6 (actually 5.75 due to averaging effects). |

proud - yes. proudest no. |

I'll try to look up "quartile" soon. |
Saint Jiub 07.10.2004 22:11 |
If there is one thing worse than being mocked, it is being mocked by right-brained, artistic people. I geuss I'll get over it. Am I the only nerd on Queenzone? Oh well. |

I do apologize. It seems I was only utilizing a quartile of my cerebrum. Blame the corpus callosum! |

When I first heard this song (a long time ago) I was not too fond of it. It was totally different than any other Queen song. Shortly though that became one of the main reasons that I love the song. |
Fenderek 08.10.2004 03:00 |
Well, I absolutely love it- one of my favs... The moment when "softer" piano/drums/bas mono-recorded bit comes suddenly into heavy guitar riff.. Ah- it's awesome!!!! And some live versions are remarkable- Wembley Arena for instance! As I said- one of my fav Queen tracks... Guitarwork is AWESOME! |

AlbyboyIt must either be on a bootleg or in an old german music tv-show from '79, (with an interview with the band and some live-excerpts) which I've seen: it was the Munich concert and the crowd starts shouting for Mustapha - and Freddie says something like "why the hell do they want that f****** song again ?". Seems like the german audience for whatever reason picked that song as a favourite and requested it during that tour, and thus they released it as a single. The shouting on LK is very likely to be from germany as well, see link (Frankfurt, thanx to Sir GH) |

Maybe it has to do with the turkish people in Germany. As far as I remember it is also released in Yugosalwia as single? No idea. A few years ago in a pub they had the Mustapha single in a jukebox, and it was played nearly every weekend once, here in Germany. |
YourValentine 08.10.2004 06:55 |
Mustapha has always been a hit in Germany, I don't think it has anything to do with the Turkish people here. I think it was always regarded as very funny with all the made up lyrics and it rocks! Since the 60s there were always popular bands in Germany who combined comedy and Rock music, so it's obvious that Mustapha was very popular among German Queenfans - and still is. When I saw Brian perform in Offenbach 1998 the crowd began calling for Mustapha from old habit. Brian laughed and he said he *could* sing it but then his voice would be ruined for the rest of the tour. When he announced the next song he said - "... and it's not fucking Mustapha" :) |
BrianRules 08.10.2004 08:26 |
"... and it's not fucking Mustapha" Really? Brian said that? I don't know why, but I'm surprised. Anyway, I absolutely love this song. It gets my blood flowing. Great start to the album. I love the middle eastern sound Brian gets out of his guitar. |

Hi Juls, YourValentine, yeah, germany tends to like "weird" songs. I think Flash was for a long time their most successful single here, and even though it's not as "unusual" as Mustapha it's still something that people in other territories did not like that much. |
iGSM 08.10.2004 09:52 |
Have you damned your corpus callosum and it's Alien Hand Syndrome lately? I know I have! *goes off on another AHS induced adventure/stroke* I like Mustapha..except the start..absolutely shits me. |

I love Mustapha. I find it a very engergetic song, which is good for when I just want to have a great time and go crazy. |
twowaymirrormountain 08.10.2004 18:55 |
I was actually thinking about starting a topic about this song. I love it. It is definitely one of the best songs on Jazz. This song shows, even more so than the vaudeville numbers, that Queen in general, and Freddie in particular, have giant, iron balls. When Jazz was released, Queen were huge. They had had several albums in a row with big hits and they were playing huge concerts. Many bands in their shoes would have played things totally safe. Instead, they start off an album with a song that is completely insane. I think it is a great song but I can see how the general public might not like it. Fuck them. They have no imagination. |
twowaymirrormountain 08.10.2004 18:56 |
Also, it's great that the next song is Fat Bottomed Girls. A total hedonistic simple rock number following a complicated quasi-religious song. |
KillerQueen840 08.10.2004 19:00 |
Well, I think that my favorite song on that album is "Fat Bottom Girls" or "Let me Entertain You." |
7Innuendo7 08.10.2004 19:09 |
For some reason Mustapha reminds me of the Jazz cover art -- mysterious, complex, and spare at the same time. The chorus is awesome. I thought it was released as a single in Yugoslavia, though, is that right? |
FredMerBul 09.10.2004 05:16 |
What is Mustapha about? (Does it realy have any sence?) I love this song! Definitely one of my favorites. |
crowley 09.10.2004 12:12 |
"Mustapha" isn't anything special, however Brian's guitarwork in this piece is truly amazing. The whole "Jazz" album is quite, like a sinusoide: there are great songs such as "Bicycle Race", "Dead On Time" and some shits like "In Only Seven Days" (too "beatlesish"). I also hate the introducing guitar from "Jealousy", but I absolutely love the few - second sequence of piano at the "very" beginning. I absolutely f*cking love "Don't Stop Me Now" and "Let Me Entertain You". |
