As a drummer, where would you put Roger Taylor amongst the greatest? The popular choice of greatest always seems to be Neil Pert(spelling?) of Rush. I admit he's amazing as hell, but this past year's tour has made me feel comfortable putting Roger as my top choice. Who are the drum gods? I'm no expert, but here's my list: 1. Roger Taylor 2. John Bonham 3. Tony Thompson(The Power Station) 4. Budgie(Siouxsie + Banshees, The Creatures) 5. Rick Allen(with 2 arms, still amazing with 1) 6. Roger Taylor(Duran Duran) 7. Cozy Powell 8. drummer for White Lion 9. Lars Ulrich 10. Will Calhoun(Living Colour) |

that's a good question, Where does Mr Talyor rank among rock drummers?...In my opinion, neil peart, keith moon and some others are better. Roger is probably is in the top 20. |
Togg 13.06.2006 04:10 |
This is always a tough one, Roger is my favorite drummer, but that is more to do with his flare and style than ablility. He would always be at the top of my favorite list, but if you want to go by technical ability, the list might go like this; Buddy Rich Gene Krupa Steve Gadd Neil Peart John Bonham Ginger Baker Ed Shaugnessy Terry Bozzio John Blackwell Roger Taylor Thomas Lang Carter Beauford Kenny Arnoff Stewart Copeland Phil Collins Liberty De Vito Steve Ferrone Cozy Powell Keith Moon Peter Erskine Of course this is just personal, who the hell can really judge. |

This is such a studip topic. Those that are the best is seriously not in the "mainstream" world, as queen, rush, zeppelin and the other. And on the other hand, you have to think of how well the drummer fits into the music the group play. Charlie Watts in the Stones will never end up on such a list, but he's doing a great job, beacuse he does what he needs to to. But if you would put Charlie into Queen, it would not be a good choice. It wouldn't be queen, as rogers style is so much a part of the queen sound. The opposite off course too. When I hear some concerts on my school (music University) I hear drummers that do things roger only can dream of doing, but it isn't fair to compare, as I said. People do different things.... and what about this guy... can you compare him with roger or... no they do differnt things... link |
FreMe 13.06.2006 06:12 |
The only drummers I know is Phil Collins, and good old lesbian Roger :p |

I think Roger is pretty underrated as a drummer. I remember having a debate with my friend about it - I was going on about what a great drummer Roger is and he said that he isn't that good. I wouldn't say Roger is the world's greatest drummer but I still think that he deserves to be ranked a lot higher than he is in these polls. And anyway, he's still my favourite drummer which is a different thing altogether! |
Togg 13.06.2006 07:35 |
This topic could go on and on, and frankly no one would be right, it all depends on how you rank them, ablility, style, songmanship, for example, Keith Moon was a great showman, he had a style all his own, he was lousy at keeping time, and really only had one fill that he played forwards backwards and sideways, but basically always the same. Technically he could do very little compared to the early greats like Buddy Rich, yet he had a way of captivating the crowd. Neil Peart is now doubt one of the greats, and techically he plays probably the most accurately it is possible to play, however the song itself suffers as a result of his desire to overplay everything (IMO) At the end of the day all you can really do is list your own personal fav, it's the same argument as the best guitarist on, Is Brian better than Eric, well no they are just different, each masters of there own style |
Bob-Plant 13.06.2006 08:33 |
Roger is most definately under-rated here in the States. If one wants to rate the best drummers ever, in rock only (no jazz/big band/funk etc), it would seem neccessary to consider 1)ability 2)contributions to his band/songs 3) Influence on other drummers. Using that criteria, I would say John Bonham would have to be considered the best ever. Neil Peart is, hands down, the best technical drummer in rock history-there can be no debate there. But my guess is most people who love Queen probably like Zeppelin too and if that is true, everyone probably knows just how much John Bonham contributed to the songs (hence they never regrouped because no one could contribute the way he did). Roger should place pretty high on this list because he actually is very original. Also, he is probably the only drummer in the top twenty that also sings, both back up and lead, while he plays-that alone is impressive. If you don't agree, try it sometime... |
Ready_Coddie 13.06.2006 08:43 |
Sasha... Roger is ranked 55 in that list |
bonnzzo 13.06.2006 10:09 |
As far as talented and best overall drummer, I would put Roger in front of Phil Collins by a short margin. If you account ability, song writing, singing. Bonham is my favorite drummer, due to the fact that Zeppelin are so dear to me and to everyone else who picked up a instrument since ‘69 and played rock and roll. But when you start talking about just drumming and not singing you have to take into consideration that you are comparing apples and oranges. Unless you put Neal Peart into ZEP or put Bonham into RUSH you can’t compare them. Don’t forget Dave Weckel, Carter Buford, Alan White (Listen to early YES, the stuff he does in extraordinary), Ron Tutt (elvis’s drummer) to name a few. |
Bob-Plant 13.06.2006 11:04 |
Bonnzzo-that's a very valid point. Neil Peart and John Bonham are my two favorite drummers-but neither one would have been as good if in each others band. I would say the main difference between them is Neil is a everything-including-the-kitchen-sink kind of drummer. Bonzo was more of bare-bones style (one snare, two toms, base drum and a couple symbles and he could sound better than any drummer with a huge set). If I was starting a band, I would take Bonham over Peart, but just barely. Speaking of huge drum sets, and I have nothing against Kiss, but it always pissed me off that someone like Peter Criss had a huge, beautiful drum set, yet he really was a pretty shitty drummer for the most part. |
thefalafelking 13.06.2006 12:13 |
Roger is a powerdrummer, but not a very technical drummer like Neil Peart or Bozzio. Three greatest drummers alive: * Neil Peary from Rush * Bill Bruford!! (king crimson, yes, solo, earthworks,...) * Gavin Harisson of Porcupine Tree (you must check them out!!! you'll definitely like it!, tell me what you think. it's greatest unknown band in the world! link listen to trains and stars die, for the perfect popsong, and to the others if you're more into heavier stuff! enjoy! |

A quick Peter Criss story, in case you didn’t know in the late 70’s the members of KISS, in order to get all there frustration out as far as wanting to go solo, agreed to all record there own solo albums. Peter wrote his with his friend/producer (I forgot his name). But they did the album. And they went on to write songs together into the 90’s. But the point of the story is when KISS went into the studio to record there next album, DYNASTY, Gene got that guy to produce THAT record and THAT guy told gene that Peter Criss should not be the drummer on that album due to his lack of skills. He only recored 1 track on the album. Long story short….I never understood everybody’s fascination with Peter Criss, I mean I like KISS but as drummers go, he was so simple it was comical… |

Bob-Plant 13.06.2006 15:57 |
I heard that story about Peter Criss too. I think it was the producer Vinnie Poncia that didn't think Peter's drumming was up to snuff. I think they ended up using Anton Fig, the drummer who's now on Late Night with David Letterman. But you're right...back to Queen and Roger Taylor's drumming. |

Hey Mr. Fred, before you start bashing my topics, calling them stupid, learn to spell stupid first. And then, go kill yourself. I agree with some of you about how the style of music dictates certain drumming, but I also feel that there are those who distinguish themselves and their bands by their own unique creativity with the skins, particularly someone like John Bohnam who has so many tracks that seem to fall out of rhythm at the surface, but never actually do, instead creating a loose addition of percussion that heightens anything the song writers, guitarists, vocalists or bassists can offer. |

Drummer from white Lion is Greg d'Angelo - he's nothing outstanding, but does play some good stuff on the Mane Attraction album, and a good solo in their version of Radar Love. I suppose technically you can ascertain the 'best' drummer, by measuring how many specific fills they can play, how fast they can play them etc..., but that'll never usually produce most of the drummers that people will rate of their favourites - these which usually relate to how that person's music has affected them through their life. My personal faves are arrived at by how much I like their music, for their style of playing, what they do/don't play in a song, their technique and their influence (although I recognise that they are possibly not solely tecnhically as good as, say, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Eric Delaney, Dennis Chambers, Pat Torley etc..) - they are: Roger Taylor (of course!) - Queen Dave Grohl - Foo Fighters/Nirvana Harry James - Thunder Dan Pred (Dn Reed Network - check out their Live At last double CD!) Matt Sorum - G n R / Velvet Rvolver Liberty Devitto - Billy Joel If you ask me next week, I'd probably come up with a completely different list! |

It's absolutely mindblowing that a kid could do that. But it's far, far over the heads of the majority of people here, and anywhere. The majority of drummers, including professionals, cannot begin to understand much of what this kid is doing. John Bonham, Charlie Watts, Keith Moon, Ian Paice, and Roger Taylor don't stand a chance against this kid. This forum is filled mostly with teenagers who haven't been exposed to any decent musicians outside of the mainstream, so there really isn't much point in going in that direction. Oui, Neil Peart always does seem to be up in the top, as he is on my list. But... I'd say Roger's second only to Neil, for me anyways.Dude... I cannot believe I forgot to put him on my list. DUR!!! Not only is he on it but I put him behind Roger. Do you know why Roger is better? Because he's Roger. What I mean is that I am biased because he's Queen's drummer. He truly is amazing and can match anyone... except Peart. I'm not deaf, I know that guy is to drumming what Freddie is to singing, but I stick with Roger because of how perfectly his rhythms frame a song and especially because of how jawdropping his drum solos usually are, particularly during the recent tour. When I saw Queen live for the first time in my life with the Queen + Paul Rodgers tour, it was at the NEC arena in Birmingham, England. I went to the show ready for it all, but primarily ready to see Brian Rock. He was great, no doubt about it and so was Paul, but it was Roger who stole the show. Awesome vocals like I have never heard before, excellent showmanship, great drumming through the songs, but his solo that particular night is something I have never heard anything equal to in percussion, not even from Mr. Peart. It's too bad for Neil Peart, and that awesome Rush guitarist that they are in a band that can create such great songs, but have it all ruined because of a voice that could drive me to suicide. It's amazing how that voice can screw up such a good thing. It's like going on a blind date. You see the girl and start from the bottom. Gorgeous legs, great tush, a stomach you could fry and egg on, exact replicas of Uma Thurman's breasts at age 19(guys see Dangerous Liasons and you will know what I am talking about), slender arms, an exquisite neck, long blonde hair, beautiful big green eyes.... but a giant, fully grown handle-bar moustache. That is Rush to me. |

I wasn't aware that... ummm... that Ringo Starr... could drum... at all... I mean to say, I thought the boys hired him because he didn't make much of a fuss and was more fun than Pete Best who was/is actually the more sufficient drummer... Anyhoo, as for Roger, he's OK. He's been described as a 'consumate rock drummer' I'm no expert on drummers but I can tell a good drummer from a crappy one and, contrary to what Brian says I don't believe being able to tune a snare makes or breaks a good drummer. Roger is a great flashy rock drummer for a great flashy rock band. Someone like Charlie Watts, who just keeps the rythmn will no fills or fancy solos, would not fit in with Queen, Roger can pull off some solos (if it wasn't Roger then I wouldn't say that's a good thing but ah well, they asked for a 'Ginger Baker type'...) and as far as I can tell, Roger's never left the band wildly disorientated, for want of a better word. Technically I'm told he's not great but I think he's the first to admit that. So I don't think he belongs in the top 20 Greatest Drummers of All Time but he does what lot's of drummers don't: versatility. He is a great singer, he is a good all-round instrumentalist and a very good song-writer. It's all this, plus the drumming which makes him one of my favourite musicians of all time. |

But, as much as I hate to admit it, John Bonham is the best...my ranking... 1.Bonham 2.Taylor 3.Moon 4.Starr 5.Baker There's so many, I can't choose! I love the drummer from Soundgarden-but I can't ever remember his name... but the best drummer will be the drummer from my band...he's amazing! |
