But I feel that some of the other subsequent posts crossed the line of what is wrong about the association of nudity with porn, and I feel obligated to enlighten the uneducated. As a practising, card-carrying American AANR-member nudist (it's in my wallet, silly), I totally object to some people's concept of just exactly what porn is. 1. The bicycle race poster does not represent pornography in any way, shape or form, nor does the linked "shocker" promotional poster. People who deem either one of these porn do it entirely by their own mental association of what they believe porn must be. There is much more to porn than a mere pose in costume clothing. 2. There is nothing shameful about ANY human body. The shame lies in the indignity of having been ingrained from childhood an inherited, false religious concept that not wearing clothing is immoral or improper. Well geez. Count the religious paintings in the museums featuring nude bodies, such as cherubs and the creation of Adam. In actuality, clothing was created out of necessity to cope with the elements. 3. "But in the Bible, it says 'Adam and Eve saw... and they were ashamed'..." Perhaps THEY were, but I certainly am not. There is no true reference in the bible prohibiting nudity: nudity is not a sin. 4. Spencer Tunick is world-renown for his nude photography. Thousands of people liberate themselves of clothing for the cause of art for his events, and none are the least bit ashamed nor should they be. And not one of them feels the tiniest lack of self-esteem: if anything, their self-esteem is elevated for accepting themselves as who they are. Having made my points and, hopefully, educating a few people, let me also add that I have never seen any Queen promotional material containing drugs, shooting, killing, violence, or any other of the real threats that plague society today. S van der Veen is ABSOLUTELY correct on this promo poster. It was banned here in the States because our country (still to this day) is uptight about sexuality. There is nothing pornograpjic about the shot. There is no depiction of anything sexual other than the fact that there are two scantily clad women. Big deal! The first week when JAZZ was released I saw the poster inside and didn't think anything dirty about it. Shit, I was 13 at the time. I just liked nude women... and still do. But there was such an outcry from the public that shortly after they put a card inside for people to order the poster if they wanted it. 55 nude women on bikes was not pornographic but some peoples' minds think differntly and they alway think the worst. The poster is odd and has nothing to do with the '76 tour but I wouldn't consider it dirty. |

Wow that's like the coolest thing I've ever seen! They were sort of pushing a goth look there for awhile. Is there a higher-quality version of it somewhere? One where the words aren't all blurry? I love the light and shadow, and the new meaning to the the album name. I would LOVE to have a framed poster of that! Queen was all about pushing limits back then, and that's what I liked (and why I lost interest in '80s).... I dunno about it being on the website...but on the other hand, kids can buy the Jazz CD with the poster, or the GVH1 DVD with the Bicycle Race video. I even bought the Jazz LP when I was 6...well actually my mom made sure I got the one without the poster :( Part of Queen's genius in the early days was being able to appeal to the gay audience "in the know," while still retaining their somewhat clueless heterosexual macho male audience by just throwing pictures of naked women here and there. Queen was so good at marketing. (Yeah I know that sounds bad, but it seems like that was a strategy...and it worked.) |
