Mr. Teatime 12.01.2004 13:56 |
For those thinking, myslef included, that Roger's drumming has deterioated because of age, I am watching the george harrison tribute which was at the end of 2002. Ringo Starr is playing drums here and he is 62 (possibly 61) at this stage, not a sweat is broken. So it's just that Roger is out of practise, and hopefully if there is to be anything new this year from brian and Roger he's got into shape.... |
Flashman 12.01.2004 15:13 |
There's no comparison: Ringo Starr wouldn't break a sweat cracking a fart, he's a tawdry drummer. Roger, on t'other hand, is the dog's testicles. Different league my dear Mr Teatime. |
Robin 12.01.2004 16:48 |
Yes, well, as much as I love the Beatles, comparing Ringo and Roger is apples and oranges. I found an excellent site yesterday about Queen and I was on it forever! It had a studio breakdown of each song and what each player did on that particular song. It was so interesting....and tons more info as well. One of the best Queen sites I've seen. Reading about RT's contributions to each song (and the other guys too) was so interesting. IMO, Ringo is leagues behind our Rog. |
Johan 12.01.2004 17:59 |
Can you remember the URL of that site?? |
Robin 12.01.2004 19:22 |
Here it is. I can't remember where I found it, maybe someone here? link |
FriedChicken 12.01.2004 19:26 |
ofcourse Ringo is miles behind our dear Mr Taylor. And i admit this as a Queen lover, and as a Beatles lover. Besides drummer roger is a vocalist, guitar player, bass player, keyboard player, and he wrote some great tunes people will remember 30 years after they have been written. Did Ringo wrote songs like that? Nope. But apart from songwriting and other abilities, Ringo was just an average drummer. most of my bands had drummers better than Ringo, And those were just teenagers. A quote from Paul McCartney when he was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the history of Rock 'n Roll: "He wasn't even the best drummer in The Beatles!" |

Yes, Niek, that's what I was talking about originally, but the whole site is very informative. |

Ringo may not be in the same category as Roger in the playing department (he beat out Pete Best, didn't he?) but he's a damned good-looking 63 years young! (He'll be 64 this July!) Hate to say but he makes Macca look like a fossil! *snicker* Ringo was not and never will be a songwriter. He was just "there", drumming along and keeping a steady beat for John, Paul and George. He's still very charming after all these years!! :-)) |
Matti 12.01.2004 21:10 |
Lol. Oh they're all still cute! |
Lester Burnham 12.01.2004 22:45 |
As far as I know, Ringo wasn't able to explore his drumming too much (at least between 1962 and 1966) because The Beatles were always on tour, and he was only able to keep a steady backbeat because there weren't monitors in those days, and if he deviated at least marginally from the original beat, it would throw the entire band out of time. But he explored more with the drums as the years went on, even if it's still 4/4 and simplistic. 'A Day In The Life', 'Rain', and all of Abbey Road is simply amazing, especially considering he's not a great drummer. Although I think he's miles above Charlie Watts. |
Richard Lopata 13.01.2004 04:08 |
Roger always makes those "fish-breathing" gestures with his mouth when he is drumming. People also said this when they saw his contribution with the Corrs at 46664. That was not a simple bass-line, he never played with that female-drummer before and he obviously "didn't know the song very well", ... so he was just focussed, not tired I think he will surprise you when they are on a big store again. Never mistake style with good or bad shape |
Whatinthewhatthe? 13.01.2004 21:12 |
Roger always managed to look sexy AND sweat buckets at the same time! (Those bedroom eyes...rrrrrr!!!) |
geeksandgeeks 14.01.2004 15:33 |
The difference between Roger and Ringo Starr is that Ringo never could play the drums. At all. And in case people haven't noticed, most people do mellow out and settle down as they get older. |
Krizzy 14.01.2004 15:52 |
Roger is a good drummer but when you don't perform as often as you once did you get a little rusty is all. He is still one of the best in my book IMO. As far as Ringo I adore him always have Ringo never took himself seriously, he's a lot of laughs saw him last summer during his all-star tour had a blast! I wouldn't waste money on Paul anymore, he's become to high and mighty. When Linda was around he was more humble, now forget it especially what the tix to see him cost. FORGET IT! Kriz ;o) |
Whatinthewhatthe? 14.01.2004 19:27 |
Krizzy, I saw him too (in Nashville) a few years ago and he was awesome! He put on a much better show than Macca did (saw him too, the year before Ringo). Ringo's son was drumming on some songs and I could see a shadow of the old Ringo for just a few fleeting moments! Wouldn't it be cool if all of the Beatle sons would come together for one concert...George's son Dhani is a perfect clone of his father, and his guitar playing is more than decent. Sean is a little avant-garde like his mum but could work, though Julian could probably do a better job. Paul's son James has played with his dad's band on tour and is pretty good, and Zak Starr is his dad's shadow. Queen kids could do the same as well -- they grew up around music and I hope it influenced them! Anyone know if the sons/daughters have a music career yet?? |
lady_stratocaster 14.01.2004 19:43 |
Roger will be always the best!! |
Saffron Caribou 14.01.2004 20:58 |
Bah! Roger the badger is old, and feeble. Let him have his rest people, and bask in the warm bed of money while strippers dance around his bed...wait that's Mex's fantasy. |
Whatinthewhatthe? 14.01.2004 21:01 |
Roger is as charming as ever! I was one of the lucky ones to meet him and Brian at the 2001 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction (March 2001, NYC) and he was a real delight to meet -- GOD those sparkling blue eyes and dimples that won't quit! Brian was just as charming and very tall -- someone to really look up to! Both had awesome smiles and handshakes I won't quite forget!! |

Lester Burnham 15.01.2004 23:47 |
Sorry...did I just read that Ringo can't play drums? I didn't just read that. Tell me I didn't. |
Saffron Caribou 16.01.2004 01:17 |
Yes you did Lester. Sad, but true. He plays drums very well, but his singing *shudder*. Ringo is a great actor, loved his acting in "The Magic Christian", a classic British Comedy film. A funny thing though, I would hate to be Pete Best when The Beatles became famous. |
Saffron Caribou 16.01.2004 01:24 |
Oh btw, was Ringo in some children's show in the 80's or something? |
The Mir@cle 16.01.2004 03:10 |
Sorry Shoujo Revolution, but I don't agree that Roger has to rest in his bed filled with money. I think Roger still has the age to make a new album and maybe a little tour. With a little practice, he will be the old Roger soon. |
Pim Derks 16.01.2004 05:49 |
"Oh btw, was Ringo in some children's show in the 80's or something?" I think he did a voice over on a show called Buddie or something? |
Bohardy 16.01.2004 06:21 |
He did the voiceover for Thomas The Tank Engine, which was a kids programme about a big blue talking steam-train. Can't say I ever watched it. |
Pim Derks 16.01.2004 08:28 |
"He did the voiceover for Thomas The Tank Engine, which was a kids programme about big blue a talking steam-train." For which Tim Staffel created something... (the puppets I think) |
The Real Wizard 22.01.2004 04:20 |
Of all people, George Carlin was the narrator for a couple seasons of this show! It was very strange to hear him talking for ten minutes without swearing. |
Bohemian Queen 22.01.2004 07:17 |
i think that thing that he does with his mouth h=when he is playing the drums makes him look so much betta and ringo starr and roger taylor erm let me see although ringo is a good drummer i don't think he is dedicated to fame as much a roger. from the looks of things . only because roger breaks more sweat now when playing the drums than ringo but it aint over till the fat lady sings! go roger. RMT4eva |
Saffron Caribou 22.01.2004 19:36 |
I'd be great if Roger would release a solo album, and toured solo, not with the horrid Queen+ name ughhh. About his drumming, sweetheart did you watch the 46664 concert? His drumming was way off, and he even needed ex Kiss member Eric Singer to back up Roger! True with a lil practise he might get back on track. However, it seems that most of his time is spent backing the musical, sailing across the Caribbean, and taking holidays in Ibiza. He deserves it IMO. So let him be. Mart its cool that you disagree with me. Its your opinion. Meanwhile, I'll stick to mine. |
Saffron Caribou 22.01.2004 19:40 |
Oh wow thats adorable! Ringo doing voice overs for kids shows! I'd love to listen to that! Carlin doing kids shows?! Wow! Thats also adorable, despite his reputation for the 7 dirty words. IMO Carlin is a comedic genius, and a great satirist. Bless him. |

ringo starr does give it any effort, as much as i love the beatles whereas roger... he hits those drums like theres no tomorrow! and besides, queens lighting made them all sweat! have you seen it! its huge! and i believe that they all had tans afterwards! im waiting for the day when roger just becomes so sweating from dru, that he takes his shirt off, like freddie, that would be a champion day... and the best day of my life |

Ringo was also on another kids show about trains in the early 90's. It wasn't Thomas the Tank Engine, but it was some train thing. He was "Mr. Conductor", I believe. I loved that show, as I was four at the time. Anyway, his drumming isn't extraordinary, but he's hardly bad. I mean, the Beatles wouldn't have been The Beatles as we know/knew them without him. Just the image, you know? It would be nice if the Beatles sons would form a band, wouldn't it? Julian is a clone of John, James looks more like Linda than Paul, in my opinion, but who cares?! Just to add: Yes, Ringo was 62 by the George Harrison tribute, as his birthday is in July. |
chancelloramethyst 21.09.2004 23:47 |
Ringo played Mr. Conductor on Shining Time Station, which was a take off of the Thomas the Tank Engine Series George Carlin also played this role. It was one of my favourite shows growing up (dating myself here....) and it might be why Ringo is my fave Beatle... even if he can't really play the drums. George Carlin is hilarious, too. -Amethyst |
BackToHuman 22.09.2004 10:05 |
to clarify what chancelloramethyst said: "Shining Time Station" was an American kids series (shown on PBS). Yes, both Ringo and George Carlin played the role of Mr Conductor (Ringo for the first couple of seasons, i believe, Carlin for the rest of the series) (sorry if i'm confusing any of you Brits by using the words "series" and "seasons"....we Americans are just all messed up). anyway, "Shining Time Station" took place in a train station, mostly involving the kids of various people who ran this train station, who would invariably get into some sort of trouble (always minor, and something laughable), and about halfway through the show, Mr Conductor would tell the kids a story about Thomas the Tank Engine (using, of course, footage from the Thomas series), which would provide the kids their moral for the day, and then they'd set out to fix whatever they'd done wrong that day. believe it or not, everyone i've ever talked to has agreed that Carlin was a much better Mr Conductor, as he seemed to be more able to relate to the kids than Ringo was. weird, i know. don't laugh -- my younger sister is 11 years younger than i, and my wife works with children for a living. i have more insight on this stuff than any grown man probably should. |
