the documentary leaked was the bonus feature |

the extras on bluray: Freddie Mercury goes solo / Extended interview with Montserrat Caballé / The making of Barcelona: Special Edition 2012 |

the leaked quality wasn't that bad at all, it was 480p. I have to agree with this quote above. don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the documentary and I have watched it so many times by now but I was waiting too long for this and I just have the feeling that I expected more. The Royal Ballet is not in full version at all and it looks like it was taken from youtube (just like the home footage of Freddie celebrating Christmas at Mary Austin's place), there's a bit too much talk about Prenter who is totally unimportant in this whole story, and there's like 4 minutes of footage from the 1970s for which I think there should have been more (they promised some interviews from 1976 and there's like 4 second of it in there). also, there are absolutely no new interviews from Roger and Brian, everything is taken from bonus stuff from "Days Of Our Lives" documentary. for some reason, I think they STILL haven't showed and said everything, as if they're saving it for maybe another Freddie documentary? who knows. but then again, this leaked version is the uncut version and there's still 17 minutes of something good on the DVD, and all that extra stuff. my hopes are still high and of course I'm buying the DVD :) |
Kacio 08.09.2012 10:04 |
I am also pissed off because it was supposed to be a full record of the Royal Ballet! But there are only snippets, and the story of this Let Me Live with Stewart for a few seconds ... the More To Life with MJ a few seconds shame ... document is generally good |
Ozz 08.09.2012 10:46 |
People... this is so much more than the documentaries that we had in the last decades full of interviews with other people and seen images. This is the first time i see the history of freddie spoken basically by himself. The prenter part was good because it is important in the queen history, the stress inside the band and the turn into the music that made hot space possible. Instead of being pissed off for a video wasn't even bought by the viewers here, we should see the good side: There's a lot of unseen footage and if all you guys want the whole uncut deal, i guess then you would be whining about the price... or the lack of new releases in a couple of years when there's nothing left to release. I think the leaked version is the TV version, and probably was leaked from there, and thats why there's missing minutes. i doubt it's extras |

"After all these years people deserves much more than that." And thats another thing about you lot. Queen fans do not DESERVE anything. You do not have a god given right to ANYTHING Queen have in the vaults. Its up to them what they release or don't. What a strange attitude a lot of Queen fans have. Be grateful for what they release. I am dismayed at the lack of an official 70's concert release but I dont stew in anger about it or get all righteous about the product I think I deserve because I have invested a lot of time and money into Queen since I was a kid. |

I enjoyed the 2 parts there. But I rarely watch these things twice. It's very truthful and unflinching. A good film, but no need for David Arnold or George Dawes - unless I consider it an update of the Magic Years with talking heads from the likes of Mel Smith etc. |
YourValentine 09.09.2012 02:48 |
I am surprised that so many people think it is not okay to criticize the release. After all, the demo with Rod Stewart has been announced for months now as THE big bonus of this documentary. Also, Rhys Thomas said in a recent web interview that many bits from the Bob Harrismaterial was included which is quite obviously not true. Now we see that almost nothing of the Bob Harris material was used, most of the new stuff comes from '"Living On My Own" rushes, Queen video rushes and the David Wigg interview. The demo with Rod Stewart is quite obviously not included but only a few seconds are played - the same with TMBMTLTT duet with Michael Jackson - there are only a few seconds - maybe even self mixed for the occasion? The criticism is not based on overinflated fan expectations - it is based on what the producers announced to whet the appetites of the fans. Does anybody remember "Freddies last interview" on the "Champipons of the world" documentary? It was a fake and people were coaxed into buying the VHS under false pretense. I think we can criticise that without being accused of having false expectations - the expectations come from official announcements and false promises. |
Heavenite 09.09.2012 04:23 |
Six of one and half a dozen of the other on this. Freddie is gone and there is only a limited amount of material to see left. But as Queen fans we have no entitlements to what we get to see. It is given, if those that can give it, choose to do so. Having said that, they shouldn't misrepresent things either. If they say something is going to be on there in all its glory, then it should be. Its misleading advertising to do otherwise. Having said all that, it still sounds like its going to be great. |
john bodega 09.09.2012 04:37 |
"The most funny thing is "Let me live" with Rod Stewart - 2 lines. Why not full track?" It's a documentary, you pillocks - not a bloody 'let's find an excuse to play rare stuff to people'. It wouldn't make any sense to play a full track with nobody talking in a documentary format. Besides which, there's a precedent for things coming out as snippets first and full versions later. We got one song from Milton Keynes on the GVH2 DVD, and then a little while later the full show came out. It's not quite the same story with Bohemian Rhapsody, but with all of the documentaries being made and the special videos where people were playing with the multitracks, it was only a matter of time before someone was smart enough to just leak the thing out. Just be bloody patient. I can't understand some people - we've been given a decent documentary with stuff that hasn't been seen yet. That's harder and harder to achieve considering the guy has been dead for 20+ years. |
Ozz 09.09.2012 04:58 |
"I am surprised that so many people think it is not okay to criticize the release" First: The thing is, we are commenting the leak, and not the release itself (so the quality comments seem out of place) Second: I used to think that the problem was that people like greg brooks were the douches that burned the bridges between the fanbase and QP. but after the excellent approach from rhys thomas in the IAMA in reddit, to read this sort of dissapointment (when clearly in this video there's a lot of rare footage, so much more that we were used to have) and to see those comments from respected people in the fanbase, make me think that the problem are the fans. Queen Fans, even the mature ones, are just a bunch of spoiled brats. Some people just dont remember how hard was to get decent stuff released a couple of decades ago.. Maybe we don't deserve to get Q&A sessions or soapbox access. People can't handle well their expectations. |

Other than you (fan since 1991) I do remember decades ago and to be called a "spoiled brat" by you is really rich. Decades ago Queen released new albums and played live concerts. It was not about scraping the barrell and about how many documentaries they can sell to the fans from the material that has been lying around for all these years. Apparently, Queenzone is being overrun by a bunch of Stepfords who think criticism is just not on when it comes to Queen. Criticism is ALWAYS on as long as it is not personal and is based on facts. edit: in my anger about the above post I mingled Queen releases and releases by the FM estate which are, of course, not the same although they can be mixed up easily with the same people responsible for the production and marketing of the release. Also I will be the first to change my mind if the final release should be different from the recent leak and if there is more bonus material to match the announcements. |
mooghead 09.09.2012 06:20 |
I agree the the internet has pretty much made ALL music fans spoiled brats. There is a new generation who have no idea what its like to travel round record fairs and dodgy record shops in the hope of finding a cd of a fan recording of a gig. Everyone just wants to point, click and download. For free. And if that isnt posible just whinge about it. |

tons of stepfordism and hypocrisy... laughable.. the press release stated we will hear 'let me live' or see footage from AKOM and POTU shoots... 5 seconds of each is really just carrot dangling nothing else, nor 2 seconds of 'Calling all Girls outtakes.' With the Bob Harris stuff and the rediscovered video archive, there is literally tons of footage now ready for carrot dangling for another 30 years. Critisism of a product is not about being a good fan or a bad fan. Besides, we all agree that Freddie was a genius in the 20th rock music - so was Mozart in his own century . The latter's work is now publicly available, up to the tinyest discovered note - who says FM's oeuvre is different? in 100 years time maybe peoplemight be able to listen to every studio note he ever recorded. Yes people demand more, thats the human nature. Freddie's work is in huge demand, as is any artists in their field, who were similar geniuses, from painters to musicians etc. besides, form what i have seen from this docu, i dont like it. |

Promise - we were promised a huge amount of never seen material Reality - only a few SECONDS of never seen material are included on this documentary Promise - we were promised to get the demo of Let Me Live Reality - only a few seconds of the demo appear in the documentary Promise - we got promised "newly filmed contributions from fellow Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor" Reality - the documentary recycles interviews from the Days of our Lives documentary and other previously seen footage Promise - we got promised the full Royal Ballet 79 performance, the press release even emphasises that it was "never seen in full before" Reality - all we got is again just a few seconds of the performance, and it looked like downloaded from Queenzone Promise - " brings to the light Freddie’s earliest filmed interview from 1976 unearthed in Australia and another unseen interview from 1976 filmed by NBC in the USA" Reality - only a few seconds of ONE 1976 interview appear in the documentary Promise - "there’s much to be enjoyed in watching Freddie and his friends go full out in their efforts to help Freddie celebrate his last birthday before turning 40" Reality - I thought it's disgusting and they shouldn't release the footage, the only thing I remember never seen before was John Reid's naked butt and that's a thing I didn't NEED to see Personal opinion - I enjoyed the first 5-10 minutes and the ending with Freddie recommending everybody to get fucked, but that's it :-) I think BTW that we have a GOOD reason to criticise the release |

Stepfordism would be to say that Queen never did wrong. Here, some of us are just pointing the obvious with some realism: The kind of release of The Great pretender, is way better than crappy Q+PR studio albums ,another Wembley DVD, or a Documentary that seem another incarnation of the same material of Magic years or Champions of the World. But, Some people seem to feel entitled to demand all the material uncut now. Pittrek: Do you realize that the hardcore collector fan is not the main target of Queen releases . There are more Queen fans out there too? Now, regarding: "only a few SECONDS of never seen material: Rhys said: "Even the footage you have seen is now in HD, so like watching something new anyway. For example, The David Wigg interview used in the past was poor quality as it had a time code running through it so we had to crop and zoom it for past documentaries. I wanted to find the original and brilliant Greg Brooks located the 1" tape which was clean and amazing quality. We also found a whole new interview never before broadcast from 1985 and 1984." So, For the general public, i think most of the documentary is indeed unseen. Rhys said: "There Must Be More To Life Than This features in the new documentary for the first time as does the Rod Stewart demo." PR said: "Among the treasures to be anticipated, The Great Pretender includes for the first time ever Freddie and Rod Stewart singing their demo for "Take Another Piece of My Heart," an unreleased song from 1984, a snippet of the unreleased Michael Jackson / Freddie Mercury collaboration "There Must Be More To Life Than This", and Freddie with the Royal Ballet 1979 – never seen in full before. " They both appear right? Did you read the Snippet part? And about: "all we got is again just a few seconds of the performance, and it looked like downloaded from Queenzone" You saw a lossy MPG cut of the video. And what else would you want if it's a One Crappy Camera recording... YourValentine Said: "Decades ago Queen released new albums and played live concerts. It was not about scraping the barrell and about how many documentaries they can sell to the fans from the material that has been lying around for all these years" Being fan since 1991 doesn't makes me less than any other . At least i'm honest about it. However don't you think maybe is time to realize that Freddie died 21 years ago, John is retired from the music Business, Brian is aging in every sense of the world, and Roger can't make Queen by himself either. You cannot expect the "feel" you had in those times when Queen was indeed Alive. We can't even have decent cover design these days. I think, for a change, we got NEW footage, NEW unheard audio, a Freddie bio, basically told by himself And we are here whining like spoiled fans, calling stepfords the ones not whining. I expect to have new exciting material to buy every year in the next decades and not run out of everything now. I expect to buy and not "just download" the stuff, so it's convenient for many of us to have accesible releases and not having to spend big part of the paycheck for having the whole deal (like box of tricks or freddie collection years ago). if we had uncut full material now, then next year we would be whining why we dont have anything else to see, anything new and exciting. Queen got himself a very demanding wife (The Fans) |

i watched yesterday the untold story, from the FM box of 2000, and comparing with this new documentary, TUS is much better than this, to show much of freddie's childhood, this new focuses only from the 80's to the freddie's death, and and shows little of the 70's moments |

Honestly, anyone who has issues with this documentary is a fuckstick. You're more concerned about what it isn't than what it actually is. I can't get over the stupidity. "Where's the full Let Me Live demo!". I mean - how does that even fit into a documentary format? You kill the interviews for five minutes while a whole unfinished song plays? No. Just play 5 seconds that illustrate the point (here's Rod Stewart and you haven't heard this before) and move on. The outtakes from the "These Are The Days Of Our Lives" video in part 3 are amazing, by the way. It is so strange to see him hobble around, terribly ill in the behind-the-scenes stuff, and then when the actual camera is rolling - he takes on this very ethereal look. Dunno how the hell he managed it. Anyway, you guys are dicks if you can't appreciate this thing. Like I said - stop crying about what you don't have, and take 2 seconds to look at what we're getting here. Save your complaints for the stuff that actually sucks, like 5ive, Robbie Williams, Jessie J, Lady Gaga, Greatest Video Hits 3, Wyclif Jean, Adam Lambert ... |

I'd like to see more about Freddies early life throught the early seventies, but I suppose there isn't a whole lot of information out there. I'm not a hug fan of his solo work to be honest. The piece of my heart demo was interesting and some of the behind the scenes footage was cool. It looked like there were some clips from the May 1st, 1975 show at Budokan that I haven't seen. Some people are complete idiots aren't they. We moan that QPL doesn't give us anything, then they let fans in to the Freddie preview screening, AND by the looks of Rhys' tweet give them an advance DVD of it, and they then leak it. It's not as if it's stuff that we could never see - we're all going to buy it in a couple of weeks anyway. This is a sure way to stop getting any little treats like preview invites and freebies in the future. If you're the one who leaked it and you're reading this - you're a dick. |
YourValentine 09.09.2012 15:47 |
@ Ozz - it was you who brought up the "decades ago" argument while signing with "Queen fan since 1991" - so do not try to turn the conversation around and lay the blame on me. I never dismissed anyone's opinion because he was a late fan but I do not want to be lectured about collecting efforts in the past when I was the one who did the collecting and you were not even around - not to mention to be called a "spoiled brat" by you. Also there is no need to waste our time with stating the obvious like Freddie has been dead since 91 etc etc - really, we all here know that. If you cannot make the distinction between simply moaning around and valid criticism and annoyance produced by sensationalizing press releases and announcement it will be very difficult to have a discussion with you. @ Zebonka - name calling is not making a point. I understand that you think that everyone who disagrees with you deserves to be called all kinds of names which does not make your opinion more valid, though. |

Pittrek: Do you realize that the hardcore collector fan is not the main target of Queen releases .Yes, I do. That's the thing which makes me sad. The last items for collectors was probably the 1992 box set with the Rainbow tape, since then Queen have released things ONLY for "causual fans". For the Freddie releases replace the 1992 box with the 2000 Freddie box of course. We also found a whole new interview never before broadcast from 1985 and 1984." So, For the general public, i think most of the documentary is indeed unseen.Of course, but again that's exactly what I wrote about above. Did you read the Snippet part?Well I know my English is crap, but I understand both quotes as - you will hear the "TAPOMH" demo and a snippet of "TMBMTLTT", and not you will hear snippets of these 2 demos. |

And a couple clips Alexandra Palace 1979?Budokan footage : link |

Its up to them what they release or don't. What a strange attitude a lot of Queen fans have.Really? What would be Queen and every other band without fans? They are famous and rich because of fans. It's not about fans rights but about respect for fans. They don't have respect for old fans. But it's nothin new, we know that for years. Be grateful for what they release. I am dismayed at the lack of an official 70's concert release but I dont stew in anger about it or get all righteous about the product I think I deserve because I have invested a lot of time and money into Queen since I was a kid.I'm not anger and grateful of "pieces" they realeses. Why? Coz I'm not kid or even teen. I don't spank monkey on few seconds of 30 years old demos. It's simple - they don't respect me- I don't respect them = I won't buy anything from them. Why not full track?" It's a documentary, you pillocks - not a bloody 'let's find an excuse to play rare stuff to people'. It wouldn't make any sense to play a full track with nobody talking in a documentary format. It's BLU RAY DISC, shithead. BLU RAYS editions has lot of bonus stuff. Not just 1,30 minutes doc. When they say that'll realese some bonuses with that I expect more than 10 and 15 seconds of two tracks. |

It's not "decades ago" now. It's 2012, XXIst century. Robots, cybernetic hands, HD television, ship on Mars etc. We shoould sit and be gratful that QP drops some garbage from time to time? COME ON! This band doesn't exist since 1991. It's 22 years and they can't realese their archives? It's pathetic. And BTW - "Let me live" and "More to life..." are not NEW hard f***in hidden songs, covered from years in the cellar. HELLO !!! These songs were realesed many years ago ! Why da f. they don't want to show full demos of thosebut some 15 seconds parts? P A T H E T I C. BTW 2 - WHY THEY DON'T RELEASE "More to life than this"?! It's the best time. 2 great, dead legends in good song. It can be a hit single... Oh, I know. They prefer played shit concerts with :stars" like Lambert. |

Personally, I liked the documentary. It's not something that's changed my life or that I may think is the highlight of the century, but of course, it's a good product. It's obviously not tailored for the uberdubersuperfans or trivia gurus, but the producer had the sense not to waste valuable time regurgitating the same old stories ... 99% of people buying the DVD have got at least some passing knowledge of Queen, so they've already heard the stories (some true, some false, some in between) about Bo Rhap being played by Kenny Everett, Crazy written in the bath, Under Pressure resulting from a jam session in Switzerland, Freddie changing his surname, Smile, Queen, Trident, blah, blah, blah... so I personally find it good that they compressed the 70's so quickly, as it was already known by most viewers. |

@YourValentine "when I was the one who did the collecting and you were not even around.." Good for you. I guess i'm not the one who can't argue without look for some kind of virtual reassurance. My old signature was just info, and not any sort of validation. @pittrek Im sure my english is crappier than you ;). I see your points, however i do find this release worthy enough. @Zebonka12 My thoughts exactly. People can't enjoy what they get anymore. |

"Some anus invited to the Freddie screening last week as a fan, has uploaded their free gift onto the internet, spoiling it for all. Prat." Ha. He needs to blow it out his ass, I'm afraid. Good job with the documentary, but there's no harm done. I'm still going to buy a copy. |

Yeah. For my money, it's worth it to have some snippets of rare outtakes vs. none at all. I'm not kidding when I say that the short section of Days Of Our Lives filmclip rushes is worth the price of entry alone. To hell with the lame-ass MJ collaboration (which has always sounded anaemic to me anyway) - this stuff was emotional to see. |

It's funny how everyone is arguing about the validity of a "leaked" release.... yet know nothing about the new standard of free marketing. But keep on arguing about it!! It's a borderline Info-mercial in here. |

Absolutely loved it!! Especially loved the tone of the whole thing, which is pretty upbeat (especially compared to TUS). Where The Untold Story was leaning too much against the over-sentimental, which seemed awkward at times, The Great Pretender was much in the spirit of Freddie, in his own words and his career. Can't wait to have a Blu-Ray copy. :) |

well, they could have released a large trailer for the documentary (5-7 min. approx.) - perhaps in two parts for even greater effect marketing-wise .Previewing it for the fans cannot be solely limited to the few residing in the London or L.A. area. I watched the bloody thing, wasn't impressed by it - for me it lacked focus, it was all over the place (the snippet from the "Let me Live" jam was 2.2 seconds?). I just wonder how many of us who listened gratis to the new Bob Dylan album on i-tunes for days will buy the album: the vast majority I reckon... |
