Which of these two songs, in your opinion, are the best on Queens first album? Any other choices are accepted. My choice - Son And Daughter, because of the intro, and the power in the song alone, sure, Liar is 6 minutes long and is nearly considered by every critic to be the best song on the album, but why not show appreciation for more than just Liar? P.S - link How does that not sound amazing? |

Well, if Mad The Swine counts, it'd be that. But Liar, Great King Rat and Jesus are amazing. |

Tough one. I pretty much like the entire album from start to finish, including "Mad The Swine." If I had to pick, maybe "Keep Yourself Alive." Punchy, fun, optimistic and it deserved to be a hit. Slightly off topic, but I'd love to hear this album (and all the albums, really) in 5.1 Surround. |

Hands down, the best song on the album is My Fairy King. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it. It is the beginning of Mercury's progression to creating Bohemian Rhapsody. |

My Fairy King, definitely. One of the best songs they ever did. Certainly in my top 5, not that i have a chart. |
tomchristie22 16.06.2012 19:55 |
Well, out of the two I'll go with Son And Daughter. The early live versions are particularly powerful, with the Brighton Rock solo and then the triumphant and smooth return into the crushing main riff. Out of all of Queen I, I think My Fairy King is the one I like the most. Doing All Right has some beautiful vocal harmonies though (the 'aaah' at the end of the metal section). |

The Night Comes Down is an exceptional song and one of my Queen favourites . My Fairy King is ground breaking and very Queen -organic. Liar shades it from the original question. |

Hi there loyal Queenies, SInce I first heard it in Sydney, April 1976, Liar remains a favourite. Live there is so much room for wonderful improv between Brian, Roger & John. While this is where Roger just works his arse off behind the drum kit. Even Deacy joined in the vocals now and then. That being said, Son & Daughter had some serious balls live; again the live improv was just wonderful. Cheers, |

I like all the songs on the album, but if ever a Queen album needed remixing its this one.The drums sound awful!!!!!! Sure all the albums have been remastered (loudened) but i do wish someone could get hold of the multi-tracks and remix them. I find the work of PiotreQ amazing!!!!!!! |
Djdownsy 17.06.2012 13:12 |
I like the album, but every song on it pales in comparison to the demo's(minus TNCD for obvious reasons). One, the production is far better, the way the entire album should have sounded and two, the actual musicianship is far better. |

I don't think there's much that can be done about the sound of the Trident albums. The studio and Roy Thomas Baker apparently had this view of recording a certain way, deadening the sound and killing any living feeling of the instruments. At least, that's what I've read and heard in interviews. The drums, for instance, are flat and almost muffled because they did things like put tape all over them. The problem is the master tracks will always have this sound. You might be able to salvage a bit better sound with a full re-mixing, but you're never going to get it much better because there's not much there to work with. If I'm wrong, and better audio can be pulled from the tapes, great, but I don't think that's the case. |

Using the word "gay" to describe a song that has nothing to do with homosexuality is somehow exonerated by me using an animated Frank Zappa avatar. Thanks for showing me the light, oh wise one. |

My Fairy King is a wonderful, wonderful song. As beautiful today as when it was created by Queen. In 2011, the song was hand selected by the band for the Deep Cuts releases - songs considered to be hidden gems in the catalog. We will never see the likes of song lyrics such as these written ever again, nor song stylings such as these either. A sad reality. They were unique to Queen. But at least we do have My Fairy King and other songs like The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke. Some misunderstand the songs or are too immature to appreciate their worth and beauty. These songs are priceless. |
dowens 17.06.2012 22:47 |
Keep Yourself Alive. I have to think this is the band's favorite too, it seems to be on almost every compilation and deep cuts volume 1! I've always found it interesting how Queen always seemed to have an affection towards KYA. Son or Daughter over Liar. But it's close. |

Also, it gave birth to the modern day saying "pay the piper" - meaning to face the consequences of your actions.... yeah, you're right it's a really gay song - you fuckwit |

Well just going soley between Liar and Son & Daughter.... It was nearly hard to pick ... But then I had a breakthrough and it became very easy. My answer is Liar. While both songs are pleasingly heavy, Liar covers more ground and I feel is more complex as a result. But my ultimate reasoning is as follows: Liar 6:26 Son & Daughter 3:19 That's 3 more minutes of Queen in Liar and that's a lot, especially in concert. So for me Liar all the way ... all the way from Mars to Mercury in fact! |

My Fairy King Out of the two... - Son and Daughter. |
br5946 22.06.2012 10:10 |
The debut album has to be one of my favourites - it's one Queen album that I can listen to all the way through without skipping a track. If I were to arrange the ten songs on there in terms of greatness, it would probably be this (and just because the Queen I version of SSOR is 10th, doesn't mean I don't like it). 10. Seven Seas of Rhye... 9. Modern Times Rock 'N' Roll 8. Son and Daughter* 7. Great King Rat 6. Jesus 5. My Fairy King 4. The Night Comes Down 3. Keep Yourself Alive 2. Liar 1. Doin' Alright * When it comes to Son and Daughter, I prefer the At the Beeb version. Freddie just sounds so raw and Brian's seguing into a proto-Brighton solo in that long version is brill! |
tomchristie22 23.06.2012 08:18 |
Meh, Liar only covers more ground so to speak because it constantly switches into entirely different sections and doesn't have any consistent structure (like MOTBQ). Also, the Q1 drums can't be fixed, as the drums were physically made to sound that way, not mixed to sound dull. |
tomchristie22 23.06.2012 08:21 |
LordOfAllDarkness wrote: such a gay song. The best song is undoubtedly Great King Rat.I know everyone's all replied to this already... Nonetheless. What exactly renders it 'gay' for you? Is it the fairy-tale based stuff? The high pitched backing vocals? Or the fact that it has the word fairy in it's title? Either way, The March Of The Black Queen, which judging by your username I'm assuming you're fond of, is equally if not more gay by that logic. But neither are gay, so I don't know what your point is. |

I've got a bunch of favourites on Queen 1, but neither Liar or Son and Daughter are amongst them. They're not bad those two, but I haven't got an obvious favourite between them. But my favourites are King Rat, Doin' Alright, My Fairy King, Jesus and Keep Yourself Alive. My favourite has changed over the years, but these days its Jesus. Love the verses, the chorus and Brian's monstrous guitar solo. Nice and heavy. |

Heeeeyy guys. I really like this album, of course, so stuff that's low on the list isn't bad, just not as good. Not a big fan of Mad the Swine (sorry MadtheSwine73) but it's catchy. 10. Seven Seas of Rhye--too short, but it's an interesting twist on the song that would come a little bit later. I also like its inclusion on It's a Beautiful Day (Reprise). 9. The Night Comes Down--I don't think people would like this being ranked so low. I used to kind of hate it, but it's grown on me. The guitar intro/outro is awesome, but I've always found the vocal part a little bit boring. I don't know, that's just my opinion. 8. Modern Times Rock N' Roll--It could have been better. 7. Doing All Right--Good song. Like how the mood changes are sudden, yet flow very well. The really heavy sections are brutal. 6. My Fairy King--I really like it, but it just feels to me like something's missing. If it were just a little bit longer it would probably be a few spots higher on the list. 5. Son and Daughter--Loooooove that riff, and the guitar solo live is amazing. 4. Jesus--Some people don't like it because it's "too religious." (Politely) screw those people. Actually, I don't really care much about that lyrics; I could listen to that guitar section all day long. Also, I've seen someone on this site point out that it sounds like a spoof of Black Sabbath, which amuses me. 3. Great King Rat--Sweet drums and two of my favorite Brian May guitar solos. 2. Keep Yourself Alive--Nothing more needs to be said about how great this song is. Also, the OP seems to think that every critic thinks Liar is the best song on the album, though from what I've seen they actually think this is it. 1. Liar--Speaking of Liar, that's currently my favorite song on the album, though that could change, of course. I agree with QueenUSA that this covers more ground (the more Queen packed into one song the better), and @ Tom Christie, I don't really care if that's only because it doesn't have a coherent song structure. When I first listened to the song and heard the guitar solo interrupted suddenly by "Listen!" and suddenly it was completely different, I was thinking "Holy shit, did they seriously just do that?" It's even more abrupt than the guitar solo into the "I see a silluhetto..." in Bo Rhap. Anyway, I really like it, so that's that. And the winner between Son and Daughter and Liar is... Liar! |

My favourite would be Mad the Swine. Out of the two: Liar (I always liked the B3 organ bit!) |
