Well, this topic was created for a few reasons. "O, I like Queen and everyone thinks I'm weird and that Queen is gay and they all shun me and make my life miserable because I'm SO *different* from them" - I am sick of hearing this sort of crap. We listened to Queen in class once, and most of the class was felt like singing along to "Bohemian Rhapsody" and other "commonly known" hits. I have made a copy of "A Night at the Opera" for a friend - and she says it's her favourite CD now. I watched "I'm Going Slightly Mad" with someone after he had watched some other Queen music videos (I happened to know that Uncut's article / page with Queen music videos wasn't blocked by the filters, and I shared this information). I was playing Queen II once and a girl asked if it was Queen and she said she liked them. I've seen a couple other people with Queen T-Shirts. And these are different kinds of people, from what I guess would be all different of your little "social classes". I guess this is partially a complaint. Liking Queen doesn't make you a social outcast - you just have your head stuck up your ass. Yes, not everyone likes Queen. Poo-poo. But, I am willing to bet that 90% of other pre-teens and barely-teens also believe that they are "SO WEIRD" and that no one could understand their taste. Sorry to let you down, but plenty of people your age like Queen. I had an elementary schooler try to name off all the members of Queen in order to skip to 8th grade (a joke involving someone thinking I could entertain kids and not kill them). And for everyone else who isn't a moody Queenie - young kids today like Queen. Yay ! O - and for the record, plenty of people have seen the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" and it doesn't make you "weird" or "unique" to latch onto a film that's been around in the popular consciousness for several decades. |

You know something? You just made a really valid point! Half of my friends HATE Queen. Honestly though, I don't care. We never agree when it comes to music! It's this thing called ... "diversity." lol |
MeganEnright 25.04.2007 15:45 |
One more thing... Liking Queen has actually introduced me to a lot of new people. Like all of you guys! Just the other day in school, I saw this kid wearing a Queen T-shirt in the library. I just walked over to him and said "I see you like Queen?" and we had a good long conversation! We're pretty good friends now! So, I KNOW that a lot of young people like Queen! |

This is all true. BUT, some people wear or listen to Queen because they're posers, and they think it's cool. I see a person wearing a Queen shirt, I come up to her and ask her about it (if she DOES like Queen) and she goes "Nope. I just like the shirt" But other than that, I totally agree. :D |

I think the Beatles had it worse, because it was a fad last year to wear Beatles shirts, but that may have been a regional thing. |

I used to get pissed when people would tell me that Queen isn't that good, and I would always say "have you heard the song Seven Seas Of Rhye?" and when they said no I would laugh at their judging Queen without having even heard one of their hits. they would sit there and tell me to listen to AC/DC and I would stare blankly at them wondering if they would ever realize that all bands are inferior to the Beatles. I learned not to trust these people because they thought you had to be gay to have AIDS, which is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. funny thing is, after I left that school, all my friends started a Queen/Beatles cult and refuse to admit that I showed them the light. |

Without wishing to sound like your Grandad-I'm old enough to remember getting into Alice Cooper in 1970 (Schools Out) -my first yr at senior school, along wth Bowie, Deep Purple, Sweet, T-Rex and Queen following the much vaunted appearance on TOTP-my mother thought I'd 'turned' because suddenly a few posters appeared on my bedroom wall amongst others that showed men wearing make up-SHOCK HORROR!! At school I thinkthere were 3 of us who took up the Queen mantle-remembering all the music papers slagged them off and we (3) got some severe taunting -me I was off down the shop to buy the new Queen album...II & I coz pocket money had been saved (new album then £2.00!!!) In fact me and my mates took to the white silk scarves thing aka II, getting our hair cut similar to FM or JD. Hey just get on with the enjoyment of some seriously excellent sounds and don't be fazed by the numpty's. Best wishes |

People like to pass Queen off by purely judging Freddie - "Isn't that the band with the gay guys?" - yet the green Bohemian Rhapsody shirt sells out at Hot Topic all the time. I have been told I was born in the wrong decade. lol |

Most of my friends are in to "old" music anyway. So I rarely have this problem. With the few friends that only like recent music, I don't argue with them or anything about it. We respect each others taste and that's that. |

You know, Charles, you have a very good point. I haven't really met any people my age that like Queen (then again, over here in Singapore, I haven't really met anyone that likes Queen as much as I do or will talk about them with me), but I'm well on my way to 'converting' one of my best friends :D I've really had a lot more good Queen experiences than bad ones, though I absolutely hate it when people mistake all of them for being gay and sit there acting like it's totally disgusting. That annoys me no end |

Two of my friends like Queen. Then I have five friends who like a few songs, three of the who didn't like Queen before, but now two have Radio Gaga on their Mp3 player and one has Bohemian Rhapsody and the Love Kills remix from Lover of Life, Singer of Songs. She'd get more points for the real song, but it's a start :p But as far as I know, I'm the only one at school with a Queen shirt |

I completely agree, the majority of my friends like Queen, at least a little bit. I see people round college wearing Queen tshirts and such. Loads of young people like Queen and it doesn't make you 'weird' at all, I think it's just that people like to feel 'special' and 'different' so they declare themselves a social outcast. I have to say I was surprised myself at how many people know Queen. When I was on a college trip to France, on the last night, when we had all drunk too much, loads of us started singing Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of our voices, and I was pleasantly surprised at how many people knew it completely. Of course, there are also plenty of people who think Queen are crap, but from my experience most seem to like Queen, at least a tiny bit, anyway. |

I remember an small argument I had with my English teacher: he didn't appreciate Queen much and said they didn't deserve that success. Of course I told him the contrary. Later that year, I had a talk with my philosophy teacher about art. He said art was objective and you could build a kind of hierarchy. I told him it was subjective, that you couldn't say someone had bad tastes if he didn't like the same things, and I used the argument I had with my English teacher as an example saying he was entitled to his opinion even if I disagreed with him. The next day my English teacher came to me and said: "Thanks to you I had an argument with the philosophy teacher who couldn't understand how I could not love Queen" That made me smile (Sorry the story was a bit long) |

i think that whilst there are young people out there that like queen it is very difficult to tell other people when you are that age as you leave yourself open to really hurtul comments along the lines of you must have aids! you mus be gay! kids are very cruel and its horrible to have to face that when you r completely unsure of yourself and who you are anyway (as most people are as a teenager). if you just go along with the rest of the crowd its much easier. they probably fell they are the only ones because they get so much negativity that te positive comments hardly seem worth noticing... |

No one, I've talked to understands my tastes in music, except my family and my closest friends. I'ts kinda irritating actually, the people I've talked to about Queen, just stare at me blankly and say 'Who?'. But EVERYONE knows the Beatles! So, as far as I'm concerned, all of us here, are young people and we like Queen, but there aren't a whole lot in Colorado. |

A lot of my friends listen to Queen. If they don't, then they at least know who they are...Of course none of them are in LOVE with them, but they like them, at least a little. Some people DO criticize me and say they are gay, though. There's even one other guy in my class who has a Queen shirt, but I asked him a couple of songs he liked and he could only name two... :P OH well...I like them, and I'm young! WEEEEE! :D |

I love Queen... and so do a lot of my friends! I also have other friends who dislike them, and other friends who have never even heard of them before. But heck, I don't give a care if people think I'm weird because I like Queen and a lot of other old bands... in fact, I think they're jealous of my coolness. hah. =P I actually feel sorry for kids my age who dislike/haven't heard Queen and such, because all they listen to is rap, punk, etc. Old music is just way better. All these new bands/artists are trying to be the best, and come out with the best songs, but they just can't do it, 'cause the best has already been done. Same thing with TV shows and such. =P Alright, that's the end of my speech. =] |

Well, i personally don't really make a big deal about Queen at school. I'm a queen fan. That's all my school mates know. They don't know about my member "obsessions" or the extent I like queen to or anything. I wear Queen shirts and listen to Queen. The rest of it I keep to myself (and msn and queenzone). I know my school world doesn't give a flying fuck about the music I listen to. |

Also - they played "Bicycle Race" at CMU today and a lot of people sang along. :D
DonnyMarsAC/DC ! Haha ! I like them, but once you've heard three songs, you've heard them all. :p O, and my test to get out of Health Class included questions such as, "True or False : One can get AIDS for a toilet seat". Honestly, I don't think people are educated about it at all, and it's sad - I learned more from an article in National Geographic than I did from school. Yeah, and as people grow older, they do learn. :p markawYou're not old enough to be my grandfather ! :p Thank you for sharing your "story" - it's always nice to hear from people who were there when Queen (and other bands) were just kicking off. And the albums, though used, that I have cost about that much ! Thirtynine ?I never saw that shirt ! D: I know people that LIKE Queen that make "gay" slags. But I always make more outrageous ones and everyone's cowed and they laugh nervously about it. its_a_hard_life"We respect each others taste and that's that." Exactly ! queen4eva224You can always try to "introduce" people to "new" music ! I once played Queen II to my whole Publications class as my "revenge" for the country (not a fan :P) music they had on the last day - one computer had speakers and I nabbed it. People asked who it was ! Freddies DelilahConvert the masses !!! I had a teacher (who was old enough to have "been there") once ask if they "were all gay". It was funny. :P vallieXD That's cute - the remix. I recently lent a guy my MP3 player so he could listen to "Bohemian Rhapsody" - he had never heard it and I trusted him enough to part with the player for an hour. :P Deakys BitchIt might just be your age now. Trust me - there are plenty of people who like plenty of things - and most young people think they're "weird". I know PLENTY of RHPS fans at my school. And it's not a weird school. I just assualt someone with a Frank-N-Furter and the reaction is usually "I love that movie !" (or "What the fuck is that ?!" - but that's cute, too). Trust me - I would bet there are other kids like you, unless you live in Kazakstan and everyone is looking for Pam. ?Freya?"Loads of young people like Queen and it doesn't make you 'weird' at all, I think it's just that people like to feel 'special' and 'different' so they declare themselves a social outcast." But I guess I now take "insults" as a challenge. And it's so cute when people are wrong ! Such as the speculation that "Fat Bottomed Girls" is a song Freddie wrote about boys. I never really had problems with other kids when I was a pre-teen / barely-teen... and I certainly "went with the crowd" on some things - I just don't know... I'm glad I "snapped out of it" - and I hope that most other people do as well. :) Mercury LoverI know - I've had so many people just NOT KNOW who wrote "We Will Rock You". I hope Brian really does take that as flattering. But "Classic Rock" is really popular with college-age and high-school kids here - in Michigan, at least. QUEENROCKS_1991"I dont give a shit what people think" ==> The right attitude ! :D |

The only thing that I can agree to about his death, is that at least he didnt die in vein you know? After his horrible passing, so much was put into the research of AID's. His death brought the world together for a cause, and the US alone has gained 8 billion dollars for AID's research! I have a lot of friends who like Queen's music. There are a couple who are really true fans. I think that people can listen what ever they want. But I think It's shame, not to listen to Queen. Songs are really great. and we all know that Freddie is #1 vocalistis of all time. And also think that is stupid to not listen some bend because the lead singer is gay. It's ridicolous! Many gay singers are AMAZING! Think that that kind of opinion is primitive, the people who think in that way are primitive, our they are gay, but they are pushing it inside. xD |
Alishana 13.08.2007 20:37 |
Why does everyone call Freddie "gay"? He slept with both men and women, as if it mattered much. But in that respect he was bi-sexual not gay, gay is a person that looks at, sleeps with and commits to only men. Freddie's claimed and stated soulmate was a WOMAN Mary Austin, the WOMAN whom he left half of his estate to and his beautiful Garden Lodge home. He said in an interview she was his common law wife, and his friends and even his lover said if anything she would have been his wife (cant remember the exact words my apologies) He also was commited to another WOMAN named Barbra who was a famous Astrian actress for 2 years! Along with his run alongs, where he slept with un named women, as well as men at parties etc. So you can't call him gay, I'm sorry. He even said he sleeps with girl, boys and cats! (was a joke in an interview) He was a lover, he was a love searcher, and really basically didnt even know what he really wanted. And in the end he found out who really loved him and meant the world to him. But besides all that stuff, that really doesnt matter... His passing was not in vein thank god. Because of everyones loss, it has pushed us all to find a cure for this horrible disease that is taking so many lives. So instead of worrying about his sexuality, lets worry about supporting the band and everyone in their search for a cure (not that we can find it, but we can support and help raise the money for the charity) There's more to life then worrying about all the small stuff, lets worry about the one thing that actually puts all the differences in the world aside, which is the fight on HIV/AID's. And yes many MANY young people listen to Queen and other true rock bands, you deffinatly dont have to be young to enjoy GOOD music! As well as rock I also love Opera, preferably Italian opera because thats my nationality. But I do like all kinds of music... Music is an art, the fight between the music world is a joke as well... Because it's not about who's better, everyone has their own taste and own way about doing things. Rest in Peace Freddie you will always be loved by all! (And I know wrong board, but I have to say as well to a couple other very talented artists of their time... Rest in Peace Randy Rhodes, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin and Dean Martin!!!) =) Just had to put my feelings in, like everyone else. We are all adoring Queen fans, and I really am enjoying this board, I am so glad I found it! |

Some people think it's cool to label themselves "weird" and "different". Hot Topic used to be for those kinds of people but now it's become as common as Hollister and American Eagle. (I won't deny I still like the store, has a great band shirt selection ;P) I haven't seen many Queen shirts around my school, but there's a lot of Pink Floyd, Beatles and Rolling Stones stuff. ESPECIALLY Rolling Stones. Makes me sick to see those black girls with the big fat asses groovin' to "Party Like a Rockstar" and wearing a skin tight Rolling Stones t-shirt with rhinestones on it. But then again people will buy whatever's on sale at the Walmart clearance rack. Even if that includes shirts with bands or singers they've never even heard of. |
