Well folks... I got the gig! Brian and Roger picked myself and Tristan Avakian (a truly fantastic musician!), to be guitarists of We Will Rock You Toronto. It will be playing at the Canon Theatre, 7 shows a week, starting in mid-March. I hope to see any QZers who can make the trip. The auditioning was an amazing experience. Last week's audition was very intense, and on Tuesday, Brian and Roger came and took control of the second audition. It was only about 3 hours long, compared to 7 or 8 hours last Wednesday. The band also got to watch the press conference yesterday, and that was a very cool experience as well. It has all been so incredibly exciting so far. The next year will be a great one in the life of Bob! |

And let me respond to that: Even if it's the same material each night, every gig is a different audience to win over, and thus it's a different atmosphere each time. If I may offer my own thoughts... I think we should ALL congratulate Bob on his hard work in getting the gig with WWRY - that's totally amazing and something that - as a MUSICIAN - I am certainly happy for him. The thing I'm concerned about with this thread is that it's discussing 2 things...and one (the gig) should really be the topic of conversation here. In my eyes, yes there may be some arguments between two people - whatever they may be it shouldn't really matter here - why not just take the good news and let the other 'issue' run its course - in ANOTHER thread. Anyone else agree with me ?? We all have our opinions and views as to what has happened to us as fans/collectors - but perhaps it's best to put those issue's aside and congratulate someone on getting a paid gig...for most of us this Queen-fan thing is simply a hobby and these arguments tend to become petty and old very fast. ...for what it's worth. |

I think this is an amazing story and I'd love to hear more about it.I can tell you that the first audition was definitely more intense than the second one. It's an 8-piece band (2x guitar, 3x keyboard, bass, drums, percussion), and we were put into random groupings to play a song. Then we'd do another take of the song, with a few people switched up, i.e. a different bass player, or having the keyboardists switch parts (since they had to know all three parts, just as we guitarists had to know two). They put us into plenty of combinations to see who worked with whom. All the musicians in the room were absolutely brilliant, and in a way I felt like the baby on board, because I was by far the youngest. But I seemed to blend in pretty quickly. The songs we had to play were One Vision, Seven Seas, Who Wants To Live Forever, CLTCL, and Somebody To Love. The second audition was only a couple hours long, and it felt great with Brian and Roger in the control room, looking on. |

Sr GH, do you need to know how to read music? What are they looking for to form the band? Musical theory, feeling? For example, i can play on guitar whatever Queen song or solo that i want, but i don´t have musical theory at all. I mean, i know scales and how to harmonize but it´s nothing professional. So, how do they evaluate the musicians? Take care |

So, how do they evaluate the musicians? Take careI can answer this. I played timpani all throughout high school, but I could never read or comprehend music. I basically saw notes on a piece of paper and hit the drums when I thought it was necessary, but I mostly made up my own parts and they seemed to work. When my high school put on a production of Hello Dolly!, I was drafted to be the timpani player, and let me tell you, they don't like it if you can't read music. I bluffed my way through (and the only reason I did it was so that I could spend some time with a girl that I really liked), but if a cheesy high school musical demands that kind of discipline, then imagine what WWRY demands. It's intimidating, because I play the drums and trying out for the musical would be very cool, but I can't read music, and I find that when I actually do sit down and try to read drum music, I play worse than I do when I'm just listening to it and drumming along. But hey, if you know the songs by heart, it's still worth a shot. |

I mean, it´s a rock production ,and as you know the best rock musicians can´t read music! Roger Taylor says that reading music is boring and you can´t tranlate the feeling of a song into the paper. That´s why i asked this: They can choose to have well educated musicians, but i´m totally shure that i know some amateur rock musicians that could kick ass in tthe WWRY band! Take care |

Bobby_brown wrote: Sr GH, do you need to know how to read music? What are they looking for to form the band? Musical theory, feeling?Yes, you definitely need to know how to read music. You have to learn the charts note for note, but there are a few places in the charts where you're asked to improvise. Of course feeling is important, and the chemistry of the band is what they are looking for. Still, you're not going to get a gig in professional theatre if you can't read music. as you know the best rock musicians can´t read music! That depends on who you think the "best" ones are. Trained musicians will usually give a much different answer than non-trained musicians, or non-musicians. Opinions differ for various reasons. Roger Taylor says that reading music is boring and you can´t tranlate the feeling of a song into the paper.Yes, but on the other hand, learning musical theory and how to read music is a huge part of improving as a musician overall. Sure, many people have found success without knowing how to read music or understand musical theory, but doing so wouldn't slow down your journey to success. You can't go wrong by getting your technical side in order. |

I'm planning to go opening night. Don't have a ticket yet though, but I'll be there for sure. If we get enough people here can we get a group discount? |

Wasn't he also a classically trained pianist ??EVH says he doesn't know much musical theory, but I take comments like that with a pinch of salt. It all depends on how much theory you use, and how important you think it is. When he plays a G chord, I'm sure he thinks of it as G, and not 320033 in tab. And I'm sure he knows where his notes are on his neck. I count that as knowing theory. Someone once told me Steve Howe from Yes doesn't know his theory, either. That I find hard to believe. He's clearly a very well-trained musician who usually does things with a very classical approach. But hey, you never know... Your thoughts? |

Do you mean to say that EVH doesn't read music ? Wasn't he also a classically trained pianist ??Sorry, i´ve missed this. When i asked SirGH about music theory i was talking about reading music from paper like classical musicians and i think the answers i got were in respect to this. Of course VAn HAlen and Malmsteen know their theory and malmesteen can improvise, but they can´t read. Van HAlen was indeed classical trained pianist and won two competitions as a pianist, but he stated that he wasn´t reading the papers. He just listen to his teacher playing the songs and then figure out howe to achieve it! He said it was an interesting result ; ) Now, with an effort he could read but it would take him some time to figure out the song. I think you need to have more training before you can say you read music. On the other hand he has developed a great ear. Take care |

I don't want to be responsible for organizing group tickets, but how about whomever is planning to go opening night meeting up somewhere before or after the show? I'd recommend Baton Rouge (good ribs!), but maybe others know of a more "pubby" place nearby? I think Elephant and Castle is near? Pickle Barrel is great for food variety, but the atmosphere is kinda "family". I guess first, who's going opening night? and of those is there anyone interested in meeting up as a group? |

Sir GH

ah yeah
wrote:I think that it would be fair to say that a musical theory and written music offers the best bird's eye view, and thus the ability for sophisticated mechanisms, while the 'feeling' is absolutely required to synthesize the theory into music.Bobby_brown wrote: Sr GH, do you need to know how to read music? What are they looking for to form the band? Musical theory, feeling?Yes, you definitely need to know how to read music. You have to learn the charts note for note, but there are a few places in the charts where you're asked to improvise. Of course feeling is important, and the chemistry of the band is what they are looking for. Still, you're not going to get a gig in professional theatre if you can't read music.as you know the best rock musicians can´t read music! That depends on who you think the "best" ones are. Trained musicians will usually give a much different answer than non-trained musicians, or non-musicians. Opinions differ for various reasons.Roger Taylor says that reading music is boring and you can´t tranlate the feeling of a song into the paper.Yes, but on the other hand, learning musical theory and how to read music is a huge part of improving as a musician overall. Sure, many people have found success without knowing how to read music or understand musical theory, but doing so wouldn't slow down your journey to success. You can't go wrong by getting your technical side in order. |

There's an Elephant and Castle on 212 King W., and one at 378 Yonge, both pretty close to the theatre. |

I just wanted to let everyone know that ticketking is now selling limited tickets to the premier! This is a special 6:30pm show on April 10th. I take it this is the one where Brian and Roger will attend and where the fanclub will be coming over from England. I grabbed my tickets, I'm thinking it's going to be the wildest show. Good luck! |

I was there last night, just let me say, IT FUCKING ROCKED!! Cant wait to go back!!! The guitarist who came out at the end was SMOKING! :D Was that you Sir_GH or the other guy? Sorry, dunno :) GREAT show, the only thing that I saw went wrong was that once or twice the mics had feedback :( Other than that, FUCKING FANTASTIC!!!! Keep up the good work :D |

Hey bob, It was great!!! The band was wicked!!! I loved all the "Canadian" jokes that were put in musical as well. I was 4th row centre for the March 14 show and the sound was great!! What happened during bohemian at the end though?? Did tristan's signal drop out or what?? mike |

What happened during bohemian at the end though?? Did tristan's signal drop out or what??Yeah, there were a few technical issues at the first show... all have been worked out now! Tonight was the first night when his monitors worked for the BoRhap solo. He played it absolutely perfectly. It was beautiful. rocks. wrote: The whole band was great, I loved the drummer, I dont have my program on me at the moment so I dont have his name, but he was great :DIt's Sean Kilbride. Hey bob, Do you solo on any songs?? What is your favourite song to play? Also, the guy that played brittany stole the show in my opinion. You can let him know!! mike |
The Real Wizard 20.03.2007 14:15 |
Basically, everything is divided evenly. It'd take too long to say exactly who does what! The most fun song... hmm, that's a hard one. We always have a good time with FBG, that's for sure. I love the challenge of No-One But You. The dynamics are really key for that song. The soloing back and forth in AKOM is always fun, too. And yes, Brit rocks! I'll be sure to pass along the message. |

Nooooo, there are no guarantees. Occasionally, Brian has been known to play the BoRhap solo, but as far as I know, that has only happened in London. |

I am excited - I will be there in a few days to see for myself, and hopefully sprinkle some extra magic dust ! This is still development time for the WWRY team, of course, and though the theatre will be full for these preview shows, and it's sometimes a great thing to see a project when it is still 'in process' - an exciting time - we will not be OFFICIALLY open until the 10th April. You're my first feedback ... apart from my dear friend Paul Crook, who was a guest of the Band ... So please may we print your impressions ? Sounds great ! Can't wait. Cheers Bri " Am i reading too much out of it? C´mon SirGH, invite him to play. If he gets to talk with you just say something like: Hey, i heard that sometimes you appear by surprise during BoRhap. Do you want to try it here?- It would be great to see peoples faces! Then you laugh just a bit, and don´t say anything afterwards. Pure silence! He will have to fill that silence with something. He will run the experience in his head and probably he will agree with you. Either way, you know this is something he enjoys to do. Go for it, it will work like magic! Guive it a try. Take care |

Brian also played in Spanish WWRY a couple times (mainly BoRhap). But I don't know if he takes his Red Special with him to other countries if he's there just to attend WWRY? I guess he plays mainly in London because it's his "home". |

Cmon, just butter him up a little by saying you've been a big fan of his since American Idol and agree that smokers have rights. :) Hope I see you at the afterparty after the show!
