I was just about to post this too. Note the typo "Another Brock in the Wall" link Broadway Putting Up 'Wall' Thu Aug 5, 2004 07:24 AM ET By Ian Mohr NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Pink Floyd's "The Wall" is coming to the Great White Way. Miramax Films has pacted with former Sony Music chief Tommy Mottola to develop and produce a Broadway musical based on the seminal rock opera. Roger Waters, who co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 and conceived the semi-autobiographical 1979 concept double album, will write the Broadway show's book and arrange and orchestrate music for the stage production. The album, which includes such Pink Floyd hits as "Another Brock in the Wall," "Comfortably Numb" and "Hey You," follows the journey of disillusioned rock star Pink, who looks back at the experiences that forged his neuroses. Like Pink, Waters lost his father in World War II. Waters, who acrimoniously left Pink Floyd in the 1980s, sold the stage rights to the project to Miramax and Mottola, who runs his own Universal Music-based label, Casablanca Records. Pink Floyd's "Wall" album, which is certified 23 times platinum and sits in third place on the list of best-selling albums ever, was adapted into a 1982 film released by MGM and starring Bob Geldof. Alan Parker ("The Commitments") directed the "Wall" feature from a script by Waters. Pink Floyd's theatrical live performances of "The Wall" became the stuff of rock legend, and an $8 million production was staged in Berlin in 1990, coinciding with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Said Waters of the planned Broadway show, "Now I can write in some laughs, notable by their absence in the movie." Reuters/Hollywood Reporter © Copyright Reuters 2004. All rights reserved. Oh my God!!! My all-time favourite concept is turned into a Broadway thing?!?! I hope I am wrong, but I had a shock hearing this. I'm afraid I am going to hate this... |
Mr.Jingles 05.08.2004 10:56 |
Me too Jeroen... I was discussing with my friends that there's this trend going on with multi-hit maker artists like Billy Joel, ABBA, and Queen bringing musicals, but we all agreed on how cool would it be to see 'The Wall' turned into a musical. I guess yes... our dream came true. P.S. Has 'Tommy' or 'Quadrophenia' by The Who ever brought to Broadway? |

The Wall is one of my favourite albums to listen to on vinyl, and I can't wait to see this production...if I ever get a chance to make my way down to New York (where I want to go for the Pokemon Center store as well, of course :P) I never got to see the movie though. Is it any good? |

As always people are complaining before the thing is made and before they have seen it. |

Holy Crap! I've got to see this someday. |

Rien wrote: As always people are complaining before the thing is made and before they have seen it ---->I'm sorry to bump your head again, Sure, but I'm not a professional nagger like some others in here. It's just that The Wall is very dear to me for several reasons and I just don't like musicals (ANY musical!) And in this case I just find it very unapropriate both story-wise AND music-wise... And I just wouldn't like to hear or see The Wall without Waters being on stage. Even if nowadays-Floyd would perform it live, I probably wouldn't like it. Waters' voice, to me, is an essential part of the thing. I guess it's an emotional thing that only he can reach. It's just MHO! |
Rien 06.08.2004 06:01 |
Sure, but perhaps you should see it as two separate things... the album and the musical? Just like the WWRY musical... Nothing can top the original Queen recordings but Queen's songs are played every night and it's like a Queen concert. It's so great to hear those songs played close to perfection. Who knows what the Wall-musical will be like, perhaps you will like it, I can't tell right now. |
Jjeroen 06.08.2004 07:32 |
I hope so, honestly! But you are right when you say it's just as with the WWRY musical. Indeed great for those who like that, but I personally hate it. It's the same thing: Queen songs, I think, can't be played by anyone else but Queen (or a part of the band) themselves for me to like it... Besides, I find most musical-songs (also the new Queen-arrangements) too... errr, in Dutch we would say 'frivool'. And if there is anything that doesn't fit the The Wall-concept it's 'frivoliteit';-) I've been a huge fan of anything The Wall related; the album, the Floyd stageshow, the Waters stage show, the movie, the book, the art... everything. So I do hope I will like this... |

I feel the same way as Jeroen. Can't they leave anything alone? Does the whole world have to be turned into a big musical or something? And why don't they write NEW stuff?? |
Jjeroen 06.08.2004 09:10 |
Yeah, but Rien's right too. Nobody is obliged to go and see the The Wall musical, nor the WWRY musical. If you don't like it, don't go to see it. But I do agree that I don't like the trend of everything being turned into a musical. I can understand Mama Mia, because a lot of people that like Abba, like musicals. That's a fact. In Queen's case I guess it's more or less 50-50, but with Floyd and especially a concept like The Wall I can't imagine there is a lot of fans that are very fond of musicals. The Abba-songs also lend pretty well for musicals because they have the same type of atmosphere in a lot of cases, the arrangements lend themselves for the musical-approach. Sure, Queen's songs (some of them) do too, but the feeling of the songs, the atmosphere changes a whole lot. Luckily Bri and Roger are involved in it so they keep some of their authensity. Personally I don't like it, but to be honest I 'm not too fond of the way the Queen-songs sound nowadays even when they are performed by Brian and Roger themselves. Roger Waters has stuck with the 'sound' we know from him. I still find a Waters solo-gig more like a Pink Floyd show, then Gilmour-Pink Floyd shows. They don't sound like Pink Floyd, Waters does. And knowing Waters will never do anything with The Wall unless he is 100% sure it is superb (yeah I know what happened in Berlin, I was there, but the idea was good. It was the technical side that made the gig into what it turned out to be) I do have hopes that this musical will be great nevertheless. Good thing he is involved himself. Although I still have my idea's and fears as mentioned above. I'm sorry for drifting away... ;-) |
Rien 06.08.2004 09:23 |
I just read that Roger Waters is going to write some new songs for the musical as well :-) on the other hand he wont include all The Wall songs :-(. Maybe they don't all fit into a musical concept. I don't know if you have seen the WWRY musical, not to go on and hammer you down on this, but the music and the songs and the show are really good. (yeah yeah we know that by now). It's not just a musical it is a rock musical :-) But then... if one can write new songs for a musical one can also make a new album... |

My guess is that finally we'll get to see a musical more dark, more psychadelic, and less gay. |

(Sorry Rien! ;-)Actually, I saw an interview with Waters where he said that he realy regrets cutting out all the humour that innitially was in the "Wall" concept... He said that humour is and always was a very big part of him and therefore it's sth he really misses in the final version of the concept... I would expect dark humour, though... Which could add a new dimension to it... Some sarcasm or sth... |

I loved the dark humor that was on the album... Just listen to the beginning of "One of My Turns"... or all of "The Trial"! :) |
