Not the Mr Bad Guy/Barcelona set, but the whole enchilada -- ten CDs and two DVDs packed into a gorgeous book with slipcase, released four years ago. I'm shocked to see what it's worth now because copies are getting scarcer every day. What is your favourite part of the set? Do you wish there were more videos on the Video Collection DVD? What if The Untold Story had been updated -- would you add this to your collection as well? |
jericho05 09.07.2004 19:45 |
Lisa I wish I had that. As far as I know that was never released in these parts (north of Toronto Ontario). At the risk of being considered a newbie... what exactly is in the set?? |
inu-liger 09.07.2004 19:47 |
You can order it through HMV here in Canada. It's $300.99 CDN plus 15% sales tax (since that's what the rate is in Ontario), last I checked, so about $346.14 CDN is what it would cost. |

What elso could they've put onto the DVD ? LOMO '93 TGP (Night And The City version) Love Kills Love Kills (Orig. Wolf mix, Loaded Weapon footage) I suppose the fact that they mostly consist of movie-material (which probably also would've posed complications with legal mumbo jumbo) prevented the last three from inclusion. |

That was Freddie's biggest solo hit, if I am not mistaken. Well, we can only hope that it's on GVH3 when it comes out. |

You were right. I just had quick browse and it seems to have run out of print as well. It's been in print for a long time though. It's not a question of still having a contract with the respective label, by the way. Roger's been out of the Virgin-contract for years, but Shove It was still being printed. |

the solo collection box set is amazing I got it for my birthday when it first came out, I forget where we ordered it from though... it's worth all the money I didn't spend on it :P may fav part: all the outtakes and stuff where you hear Freddie talking opinion on videos: I guess there could been more, but I dunno if there were more to put on it... updated untold story: how would they update it...it's not that old.... but seriously it's an essential item for Queen/Freddie fan |

Ebay is totally the way to go for this if you don't own it. I got mine for $99 US dollars, sealed and in the original packing box (oddly labelled Eil.com, though it came from the Netherlands!). I store the set in that so it'll never fade or get otherwise damaged from water or (worse!!) cat pee (DELILAH!!!). It cost $35 for Airborne Express shipping and arrived in 2 days. It's also a Region 2 set (UK). Some lucky people have the Region 1 set, which is the rare one. I was lucky to have a region-free DVD player for the DVDs or I would be a sad case not being able to watch the DVDs! Check Ebay frequently, daily if need be. You will find your Holy Grail -- I did! :-) |
Adam Baboolal 09.07.2004 21:50 |
Yup, I love the set. I got mine for roughly the same as LG. I got it brand new from a store in the UK called MVC. They had them at a very cheap £55 and £1 shipping. They still sell them, but they're back at the retail price. I too, store mine in the wardrobe, hidden from sight. Good set. I also like the parts where you can hear the studio chat. That's probably the one thing I'd like more from Queen - To get closer to their process of thought during recording and working together. I hope it's taken into consideration for Queen's sets. Peace, Adam. |

Did you see this on Eil.com? Revolting!! FREDDIE MERCURY The Solo Collection (Stunning full set of 10 official EMI CD-R acetates for the 'Freddie Mercury Solo Collection' box set, features rarities, mixes, interviews, instrumentals, Mr Bad Guy album, The Great Pretender album, Barcelona album and all the non album singles, custom printed discs and studio title/tracklisting sleeves. With a total of 140 tracks this really is a truly superb collection!). £ 350.00, US$ 624.40 Of course, this is an acetates collection (CD-R), which would be FAB to own -- but the price, yaaaaaahhhhh!! (I noticed there are no "regular" Solo Collections offered -- amazing!!) |
GonnaUseMyPrisoners 10.07.2004 00:46 |
Who's got it? Well, MEEEEEE!!!! I've got one, and yes, it was only about $100 US at the time. My favorite bit: the Untold Story DVD. It's breathtaking. The camera shots are exquisite & the detail about his youth is thrilling. Amazing stuff. The interviews are generally hilarious, too. OH, and the BOOK is GORGEOUS. WONDERFUL, PRICELESS, BEAUTIFUL. I'm not an "alternate take junkie", and some of the remix/b-side stuff is rather ho-hum, I hesitate to report, but I really dug hearing some of the really old stuff on Rarities 3... Ibex & Wreckage in particular. It's always been just words on a page to me, and this is the first time I've ever heard any proof of those things being true! A welcome glimpse into a shadowy, obscure history. I have always melted at "Goin Back", too... gives me chills, literally brings tears to my eyes it's so beautiful, and to have a "real" CD quality version is priceless to me. Ya know, Queenzoners, sometimes it's a real education trying to keep up with all the "region coding" chatter & such around here... but I'm trying. So, in case anyone's interested (can't see why, but it was brought up by someone), mine says the following: "This DVD video disc does not contain regional coding, but will play on NTSC system compatible players only." NTSC is featured on the back near the barcode & other chunder. Is that the same as Region 0? or equivalent? I'd like to ask who's going to (ask mom for their allowance in advance for the next couple months so they can) dash out & scoop one of these up? |
GonnaUseMyPrisoners 10.07.2004 01:00 |
Oh, one more thing about fading: For four years I've been keeping mine right out in the well-lit living room of my old apartment (though not directly IN sunlight). It sat atop a bookshelf, where it would potentially have the chance to fade from indirect sunlight. But it hasn't faded a bit, and I SEE it every day, and even get to show it to my friends & family on occasion. In fact, I truly don't think it will ever fade - I'm convinced the book cover is of high enough quality that it's not an issue. But I certainly understand wanting to protect it, for those who can't bear taking the risk! While I plan to continue displaying mine, don't come running to me if someone sprays soda or beer all over yours because you displayed it (certainly a risk...), 'cuz I don't live with kids, e.g.. But putting it in a glass display case might be nice... |
Roger's Beard 10.07.2004 05:42 |
As mentioned before, there were certainly some omissions from the set. One weird one though was Fred & Squir singing "lady with a tenor sax". The version presented in the boxset has the last part of the squir album cut pasted onto the end of the demo to complete the track. The strange thing is though, about 2 months before the set went on sale, someone at EMI cocked up and left an ftp page open (for less than 24 hours) which was available to the public if you had the address. On that page were about 8 songs from the boxset in pretty good mp3 quality, one of which was "lady with". HOWEVER, this version of "lady with" reaches the end of the singing and instead of having the album cut pasted on the end, it simply continues to play backing track for about a minute before fading off... So I wonder why that was changed for the boxset release? There are other tracks of course that didn't make it. One guy at the convention 2 years ago delighted in parading a CD round with 5 songs on it (which were mentioned on this board by other people at the same time), and showing off. talk about rubbing your face in it with "look what I've got and no, I won't even let you hear them...." |

like Adam Baboolal, i got my FM solo boxset from MVC for about £58. It was my very first online purchase - and my very best too! For those of you who haven't got it - save up for it. £120 sounds a bit steep but considering what you get for it - stunning hard back book - 2 DVds, 10 CDs - it well worth it. For all you smokers / drinkers / McDonald Munchers - drop those and buy this instead. |

I do have the box set, I bought it the same day it's been released in Italy and that costed me 200 euro...I was still studying those days but I saved money in advance... 200 euro was a large amount for me at that time and it costed me a lot of efforts to put them together without working, but "I did it for love" ! I remember me was so excited when I got it on my hands... The first disc i put on my stereo hi-fi was of course the one feat. Ibex and Wreckage tracks, but I have to say that my favorite cd is the Barcelona demos ones: really priceless! I wonder how long I have to wait before i can get a similiar feeling, with the Queen box set(s)... |

I still say it's one of the best things I've ever bought. I wish I'd been able to afford it at full price when it came out in 2000 but couldn't then. But two years later I could, thanks to Ebay! A friend of mine recently won one off Ebay for $157 US dollars (it's an NTSC, Region 1 set) and it's in transit from the UK. I got my box set on the day it was released in a multi media store in Germany. I payed 90 Euro for it which was incredibly cheap. I bought it on the day it came out here in the uK and to be honest, I have to say that I was disappointed by the content. YES - the package is stunning - high quality paper stock and a beautiful slip case to house it in. BUT, what do you have in there that is completely new? Out of the 10 CD's: Mr Bad Guy Barcelona The FM Collection The Singles The Collaborations The Solo Videos All the above were widely available the first three already on CD, and the second two on either vinyl, CD singles or VHS video. The Instrumentals Piano pieces played by someone not connected in any way with Queen / Freddie The Mr Bad Guy Sessions The Barcelona Sessions Lots of interesting stuff ont here, but a hell of a lot of repetition and, something that Greg Brooks would never fully answer, a lot of material that just appears to be the same mix of the released track, but with an instrument or two just taken out or Freddie's vocal mixed out - all to create the illusion that it's something unheard...... The David Wigg Interviews Nothing new and / or enlightening at all. So, on the whole, I'd have to rate it at best as a 6 out of 10, simply for the packaging and the fact that much of the material was available on CD for either the first time or in a more convenient place. To be hinest, you'd be better off paying someone $100 for them to copy the discs for you...... |
davidwmk 09.06.2005 08:34 |
I was lucky to have received a copy as a christmas pressie. my book within the package is somewhat unusal in that it has duplicated pages of some of the photos, with some of the other sections missing - is this rare or does anyone else have a similar misprint? david |
egret 09.06.2005 09:05 |
Benn is right about the significant amount of duplication of things already released. But that's true of many Queen Productions releases. |
Pim Derks 10.06.2005 05:29 |
"The Instrumentals Piano pieces played by someone not connected in any way with Queen / Freddie" The Instrumentals disc isn't played by someone else, it's just the original tracks with the vocals muted. You must've mistaken this disc for the Thierry Lang instrumentals on the Untold Story DVD. |
Melancholy Blues 10.06.2005 08:33 |

Hang on - you're missing the point. Yes, most material was available, but at a price. Nefore the box set came out, this would have been the cost of just *some* of that material - Great Pretender video single - £50 The Freddie Mercury Video EP - £40 Mr Bad Guy CD (14 tracks) - £100 Stop All The Fighting(Extended Version) - £25 (only available on IWBTLY 7" double pack) She Blows Hot And Cold - £10 (only on the MiH single) In My Defence - £10 (only available on Time soundtrack) Should I continue or can we consider the point made? |
Saint Jiub 10.06.2005 17:28 |
I did not want or need 1/3 of the box set: The Freddie Mercury Album, Mr Bad Guy, Barcelona, or the Interview disk. But buying something twice or more is an honored Queen fan tradition. It was still worth buying the FM box set though. |
Fairy 10.06.2005 17:37 |
I sure have it!!! Couldn't resist though it was expensive. I bought it in a CD store here in Italy, no trouble finding it, but it was just when it was released. What I loved the most were the instrumentals and the songs by Freddie I had never heard: demoes, studio sessions, etc. What I found a bit disappointing is that they included the solo albums which I'd guess most people willing to buy a box set would already own (thus increasing its cost)... But maybe this is a wrong assumption. Fairy |
Guy 12.06.2005 08:23 |
I bought the collection a year ago. It's really only for people who like Freddie's solo material, or else it can disappoint (I wasn't). |

You could ALSO have COPIED the material from someone friendly enough to allow you access to their collection - therefore only spending the equivalent of 1 x 90 minute cassette...... >Should I continue or can we consider the point made? If you like, but can we also consider that you were just trying to be right when in fact, you didn't really think it through...... |
YourValentine 13.06.2005 04:55 |
The Guru is right: when the Solo Box was released, most of the Freddie material was out of print and very expensive. I think the Freddie box is great. Sure, there are some tracks still missing and the essay about Freddie is stupid and full of mistakes and typing errors. But for once you have a product that was done in honour of the artist and not to make a quick profit. The whole presentation of the box, the high quality paper, the nice picture discs and the overall completeness of the recordings make a very fitting anthology of Freddie's solo work. It's not even very expensive considering the number of discs, the package and the number of printed and sold copies. |
INXS 13.06.2005 07:24 |

Benn - I still have most of that material - I HAD diligently collected it. My point was that although *some* collectors had Mr Bad Guy on CD, it was long out of print and commonly valued around £100, making it inaccessible to *most* people. |
Maz 13.06.2005 15:04 |
When was it valued for that much? In the late-90s? I ask because I bought two copies of it in 91-92, one for $10 and the other for $3. |

Penetration Guru, re: Benn - I still have most of that material - I HAD diligently collected it. My point was that although *some* collectors had Mr Bad Guy on CD, it was long out of print and commonly valued around £100, making it inaccessible to *most* people. Well, why didn't you SAY that then :-) |

I'd just like to butt in here to mention that I own the Solo Collection too... :P |

Which ones are you comparing it to? I thought the first Metallica Live SHit box was well done, as was the Alien box set shaped like a facehugger. Plus I think the Cramps had a coffin shaped box set. |

Live Shit was indeed nicely done! About the Solo Collection... Nice, I'd lov eto get a Queen one done so beautifuly... I never liked Mr Bad Guy and out takes didn't change it... :) But I'd rather pay another 100 pounds or so for a 70s Queen Box Set of taht size than get a 2 x CD set of each album with bonus material... But that's just me... |
