Who Could Play Freddie Mercury in a Movie?
| SergeantPepperDG 27.06.2004 14:02 |
Who do you think could play Freddie in a movie? I'd have to say Johnny Depp. |
| Erin 27.06.2004 14:04 |
William Hung..har har |
| SergeantPepperDG 27.06.2004 14:12 |
In "Before Night Falls" he had two roles: Bonbon, the transvestite prostitute and Lieutenant Victo. His Lieutenant Victo kinda has a Freddie mustache goin' on there: link |
| SergeantPepperDG 27.06.2004 14:19 |
He's got the cheek bones also... *sigh* Johnny Depp is so hot... |
| egret 27.06.2004 15:39 |
What about one of the guys who already played him in that Messina play? That Amir whatshisname (I forget now) was good. I don't even see why the Will & Grace guy is recommended for this. We should be glad there's no movie, though. It would probably end up with something like Elijah Wood and McCauley Culkin could be Roger and Dominic Monaghan could be, well, John Deacon was better looking than Dominic Monaghan. Hmmm. Johnny Depp could play everybody, but it would be so much running around for him. The fun bit would be doing the soundtrack, where the Queen songs are covered by contemporary bands. The Jennifer Lopez version of Another One Bites the Dust, etc. --Egret |
| nil 27.06.2004 16:24 |
Justin Theroux (I thinkl thats how you spell his name) |
| SergeantPepperDG 27.06.2004 18:04 |
Johnny Depp could definately play ANYONE. He is such a great actor. He's been everything from a transvestite prostitute to a drug dealer to a pirate to a... well a LOT of things. He's even soon to be Willy Wonka. And I'd have to say, if they ever did a remake of Rocky Horror, he could be Dr. Frank N. Furter! |
| Whatinthewhatthe? 27.06.2004 18:09 |
Johnny Depp as Freddie Mercury? Please don't destroy what respect I have for him as an actor!! I was hooked on Mr Depp since his 21 Jump Street days. Then again...his Edward Scissorhands looks uncomfortably close to Freddie's Slightly Mad character, except for the knives-for-hands... |
| SergeantPepperDG 27.06.2004 18:15 |
I never realized the similarity! Cool! All the more reason for Johnny Depp to play him. Tell me you wouldn't want to see Johnny Depp dancing around in those reeeeeeally pants... or leotards. Also, Johnny Depp has some "rock star" experience- he was in a band for a while, even after he started acting. It actually was semi-well-known. Not that I even think there is going to be a movie about Queen and/or Freddie Mercury, but I love making up casts. |
| SergeantPepperDG 27.06.2004 18:25 |
Look! link link The resemblance is uncanny... |
| SergeantPepperDG 27.06.2004 18:26 |

| Whatinthewhatthe? 27.06.2004 20:07 |
It DID work, thank you!! LOOK at the similarities there -- God, how FRIGHTENING -- Freddie didn't pinch that look, did he??? (I forgot what year Edward Scissorhands came out -- forgive the brain fart!! LOL) |
| Whatinthewhatthe? 27.06.2004 20:13 |
The second one...OHHHHH MY GOD!!! *thud* |
| iGSM 27.06.2004 21:17 |
Greg Kinnear. Or Bob Crane...if he hadn't had his head smashed in by that fiend Carpenter. The question that remains poised on everyones lips is who would play John, Brian and Roger? Yeah, think about it. |
| SergeantPepperDG 27.06.2004 22:10 |
Edward Scissorhands came out in 1990. |
| SergeantPepperDG 27.06.2004 23:13 |
I don't think my friend, who is completely, totally, scarily, almost stalker-like obsessed with Johnny Depp, could handle him dying, even in a movie. She freaked out at the end of "From Hell" because he died. |
| egret 28.06.2004 01:16 |
Those were great picture comparisons. I guess it's Johnny as Freddie then. I don't think the movie should show Freddie dying; he can look sick and die offscreen; way too depressing otherwise. The guy who played Hitler was a great actor named Robert Carlyle. (The guy from The Full Monty, also.) He could play Roger. The handsome Will & Grace guy can get a wig and play Brian. John Deacon casting still open. I love casting imaginary movies. Plus, there can be cameos! Y'know, someone to play, like, Elton John at a party. --Egret |
| Jimmy Dean 28.06.2004 01:20 |
Why does everyone say Johnny Depp?...he doesn't look like Freddie at all! If anyone is to play Freddie it would have to be a punch-up between Robert Carlyle, as someone had pointed out or...Guy Pierce (Memento, LA Confidential). I'm gearing more towards Guy Pierce...very similar features, minus the teeth. |
| Daburcor? 28.06.2004 01:30 |
SergeantPepperDG, That second comparison shot was good enough to make me agree that Depp may be able to play a decent Freddie. Though, I doubt anyone could do his accent justice. ;) |
| SergeantPepperDG 28.06.2004 15:59 |
I'm sure that Johnny Depp could pull it off really well (although, I know no one could be Freddie). Have any of you ever seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? Here's how Johnny Depp got into character: "Depp was given access to every memento the writer [Hunter S. Thompson] saved from his 1971 trip to Las Vegas. The actor read through the writer's notebooks (which included an unpublished chapter entitled, "The Coconut Scene," which Gilliam placed in the film) only to realize that "the freakiest thing was that it was all real, that the reality was as insane as the book." He rummaged through Thompson's wardrobe at the time: Hawaiian shirts, a patchwork jacket, a safari hat, and a silver medallion given to him by Acosta. Thompson graciously allowed Depp to wear it all in the film. Thompson even let Depp borrow the red shark: the giant fired engine red convertible that the author took to Vegas, which was also used in the film. All of these items only to enhance Depp's performance. In the film, he has literally transformed into Duke/Thompson, complete with the man's unusual bow-legged walk, sweeping arm movements, mumbling speech pattern, and the trademark Dunhill cigarette's in a holder between clenched teeth. It's an incredible performance which transcends simple mimicry. Depp's research culminated after a week when Thompson shaved almost all of the actor's hair for the film and entrusted him with the very car he used in the trip...." I don't even know why I'm making a big deal about this... It's not like there are even RUMORS of a movie. |

Courtney Love playin Mary Austin :D |
| Penis - Vagina 28.06.2004 18:23 |
The Fairy King wrote: Courtney Love playin Mary Austin :DExcellent! And Milos Forman directing. I loved his biopics of Larry Flynt and Andy Kaufman. I believe some people also enjoyed his film 'Amadeus' :-P Much as I hate Johnny Depp (nothing personal.. I'm just tired of seeing him in *everything*) I'd have to agree he's got/can achieve the right look. |
| Whatinthewhatthe? 28.06.2004 19:07 |
Oh, if Tom Hulce were younger...what an awesome Roger!! (LOL) I think Johnny Depp could certainly pull off a portrayal of FM. His acting style is great. I especially loved his portrayal of Ed Wood (get the connection with Break Free Freddie and the pink angora sweater?? HOOHAAAAAA!!) and think he could look good in a leotard, mmmm....yes indeed! *double thud* |
| SergeantPepperDG 28.06.2004 22:00 |
Maybe Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood) was a fan of Queen? |

|
| Michael Allred 29.06.2004 04:47 |
Johnny Depp woud certainly be an interesting choice and given his status as a major star, it would give any Freddie biopic credibility. While I cannot think of anyone to play Roger or John, I think I have our Brian ready.....Daniel Day Lewis anyone? |
| Fan_Of_Queen 29.06.2004 06:43 |
I say...Bono |
| SergeantPepperDG 29.06.2004 12:22 |
ThomasQuinn wrote: Gary Oldman ;-) He can play anyone as well (ok, so they all just happen to be bad guys) But seriously, maybe Ben Stiller. If he practices on more serious parts, he could really do it.Sorry, I can't stand when actors who are normally in comedies try and do drama. It annoys the crap out of me (i.e. Jim Carrey in "The Majestic"- It just doesn't work). |
| Josuè 29.06.2004 12:39 |
I love Jim Carrey on The Majestic and Truman Show. |
| SergeantPepperDG 29.06.2004 12:46 |
I couldn't even stand Bruce Almighty during the serious parts. Jim Carrey and drama go together like (to paraphrase Simon Cowell on John Steven's performance on Gloria Estefan night on American Idol), "onions and chocolate ice cream." |
| lottie88 29.06.2004 15:48 |
I think Johnny Depp would play the part of Freddie well. They do seem to have a strange resemblance. However, I don't think anyone could capture the true Freddie. |
| Krizzy 29.06.2004 16:09 |
Here are my picks: For FM: Eric MacCormack because I do not think Depp can sing unless they dub his singing. For RMT: Jude Law For BHM: I think Orlando Bloom is tall enough but he would have to wear contacts and a wig, hopefully he's a good air guitarist either him or someone new. For JD: Tim Roth or Gary Oldham both are tremendous actors and if you're going to play "the quiet one" you need restraint and real acting. For Spike: Alan Rickman For Elton John: Colin Firth For Mary: Keira Knightly (which would make a good match with Depp) For Kashmira: A real bollywood actress I personally like Preeya Kalidas Also I think his parents should be played by Bollywood actors as well. Well that's my 2 cents worth. See Ya! Kriz ;o) |
| Krizzy 29.06.2004 16:11 |
Here's Preeya: link |
| SergeantPepperDG 29.06.2004 18:36 |
Johnny Depp probably has a good voice since he was in a rock band for a while. Although, if there was to be a movie, no matter WHO plays FM, no one can do his voice... |

Has anybody seen the pictures of Eric McCormack (Will from Will & Grace) playing Freddie? They are VERY convincing!!! Apparently he's done something imitating Freddie before... I'm not sure of the date of the picture I'd seen. I'm trying to locate it. There's something to tide you all over though..... Here's a copy/paste clip from a letter written to and answered by Brian May in his "letters" column from November 2003: ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* **Sat 1 Nov 03** ERIC McCORMACK PLAYING FREDDIE MERCURY From: Sheri To: qms@queen-rocks.com, qms@queen-rocks.com Someone sent me a blurb that was in a California Newspaper, not sure which one. Not a lot of information here, mostly just a mention. Apparently they got the info from US Weekly. See below: Oct 22nd Eric McCormack from "Will & Grace" is to play Freddie Mercury in a new musical about the flamboyant Queen frontman, who died in 1991 of AIDS. Elton John is producing the show and asked the star of his favorite TV sitcom to play the lead. But apparently, McCormack turned him down. A source told Us Weekly that Elton then flew Eric to his estate in England for the weekend to work on him and by the time Eric left, Elton had talked him into doing the show. Cheers, Sheri --- Brian responded: It's a possibility - we have had preliminary chats with Elton about this, since he was keen for it to happen, but nothing is definite as yet. Love b ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* As for my personal vote... it goes to McCormack for the Freddie of the later years, otherwise I must agree with the others of you who said Johnny Depp. Besides... they're both very sexy! ;-) |
| Krizzy 30.06.2004 09:08 |
A play recently in NY called Mercury was what peeked EJ's interest in doing a musical. Personally, I think a musical based on a the premise of FM ascending to Heaven would be divine and EJ's definitely the perfect person to get the project off the ground however he has the Vampire musical first and BHM and RMT have WWRY to contend with before the take on another tremendous project. We'll have to wait and see, folks! Kriz ;o) |

Paddy Considine could play Jim Hutton. Also, I don't think we should get too hung up on perfect physical resemblances. We're talking about ACTORS after all; they can act it. Of course, we could do nontraditional casting and Freddie could be played by Cher. :) --Egret |

| egret 02.07.2004 11:50 |
I was kind of joking by mentioning Cher and crossgender casting, but there's no need to be so harsh about her. I think she's a good actress and a great performer, and she's got that charismatic star quality about her that whoever played Freddie would have to have (or be able to fake). And "Believe" was a great song. I think John Cusack, while a good actor, is too uptight. You know what would be brilliant? If you could talk Tom Cruise into doing it. --Egret |

| Gunpowder Gelatine 29.07.2004 16:34 |
Eric McCormack doesn't really look like Freddie, so I agree, Johnny Depp would be a better choice if a movie was ever made. |

Um, I know this might sound weird and idiotic, but i had a picture of Freddie Mercury on my desktop, and a driend of mine came over, and he pointed to him and said, 'that looks like adam sandler'. i was like, no way, but after awhile i looked at him, and adam sandler does kinda have a crooked nose, and when he did opera man on SNL, he sorta looked like a rough sketch of freddie. maybe if sandler put off on the comedy, he could be a pretty decent freddie mercury. ta-ta |
