What I'd like to know is how safe is Bit Torrents? The reason I ask is because having used the likes of Kazaa and having a real bad experience with them (corrupt files and viruses, etc), I have been put off this form of file sharing. Any info, anyone? Dave |
thankstogravity 27.06.2004 18:08 |
Bittorrent is nothing like sharing using Kazaa. Follow Richard's link above for more info, or go to link and read the "Getting Started" forum. |

Can we make this a sticky again? Or, better yet, perhaps some enterprising QZ poster would like to write a brief Torrent FAQ for the site? Either way, we've been getting a lot of questions lately from users new to torrents. Having a stable place of reference would help. |

Can I convert bittorent files into MP3s for use on my MP3 player? |
David Jones 26.12.2004 13:30 |
Yeah, if your find a programme to download called dbPowerAmp (its free) and download the flac codec, you should be able to encode them into mp3. Go to link and look under Codec Central to download the codec. Hehe, just looking back at previous posts in this topic, I said I would start bittorenting then! But I've only just started (shows how lazy I am!) and I have to say its going pretty well! |

Hi Richard, I have tried to download the BT's for different files you have shared on the home page. It seems I have done that correctly then proceded to DL the concert. Everything seems to have loaded in correctly. I have the BT file saved and showing in the main file I put it in. And I also have Dl'd the concert properly. That fole is saved as well. But it will not open to play it. Windows Media Player, Real Player, & Quicktime Player will not recognise it. What am I doing wrong? Please advise. Thank you, Steve |
Saint Jiub 03.02.2005 20:51 |
link Flac files do not play in MediaPlayer, RealPlayer or QuickTime etc. You need a Flac player. The above link, provided earlier in this thread by YourValentine should be helpful (it helped me anyway). |

Hi, I'm sorry to sound a bit thick, but last night I downloaded my first file via a torrent, using eDonkey as my client. According to the torrent window, I have downloaded 100% of the file, but I can see no way of opening the file itself, as I was never asked where I would like to save it. I thought it might be in my eDonkey downloads file, but alas, no sign. Any ideas? Cheers |
jcrawford79 07.04.2005 22:47 |
Go to "start" then "search" then "all files and folders" and type in a part of the filename you can remember. It should locate the file for you so that you can open it. I hope this answers your question. |

I've asked Bewley for permission to quote the following FAQ from link (the Bowie download site) forum located at link . I hope this helps some people. ------------------------------ I am collecting, posting, and attempting to answer some of the questions I have seen on the various forums and torrent comments. Please consider this as an addendum to the FAQ found at the Savage Jaw torrent. I hope that this posting will provide some additional information for those new to torrents. ------------------------------ Q: Home many torrents can I leech (download) or seed (upload) at one time? A: This all depends on your connection speed. A normal cable/ADSL connection can not handle much more than one or two downloads at a time without bogging down. The recommended approach is to focus on a single torrent for a day or two and then move on to the next. By all means, do not attempt to seed or download four or five torrents at a time unless you have the bandwidth (fiber, T1, etc) to handle it! ------------------------------ Q: How long should I keep my client open after download? A: There is no "set" rule for the length of time. People interested in keeping the torrent going will try to keep their window open until reaching a ratio of at least 1:1 (same amount uploaded as downloaded). Often, this is not possible as the torrent will die out (there are no more downloaders) before a 1:1 ratio is met. If this happens, simply try to make up the ratio on the next torrent downloaded, or better yet, see if there is an old torrent you can re-join to help out (both the downlaoders and your ratio!). Do not forget, your upload to download ratio is "public knowledge", and on some sites, the administrators may ban your IP address if they perceive you to be a leecher who is downloading and then running. In addition, many torrents are "policed" by users who will report this activity and alert admins of this behavior. Remember, torrents are a "community" effort and if you do not wish to give as much as you receive, then you run the risk of exclusion from future downloads! ------------------------------ Q: I have xxx speed connection, but I am downloading very slowly. Why? A: There could be a number of reasons for this. Since you are downloading with a group of people, it is possible your connection is faster than the others in the torrent and they are not able to provide you with data fast enough. The people seeding the torrent may be leeching or seeding elsewhere, thus slowing you down. You could be experiencing line problems or the seeders may be focusing on other downloaders with a greater percentage complete (thus attempting to make more seeds) at the moment. So there are a number of things to consider when looking at overall download speed. Can you do anything about it? Possibly. Download speeds are only 1/2 of the equation when participating in a torrent – upload speed is very important too. To better configure your client, you need to know your upstream (upload) speed. Most ADSL and cable connections have a much slower upstream speed than downstream speed. If you know your upstream speed, simply divide that number by 8 to determine your maximum speed in Kb/s. For example, a 256K upstream speed equates to a total of 32 Kb/s. If you do not know your upstream speed, then set your client to “Unlimited” and join a busy torrent. Simply monitor your speed… You should get an idea of your Kb/s after 15 minutes or so. Once you have determined your Kb/s, it is time to configure your BT client. If you are looking to share as much as possible during a download, then set your client to 80% or more of your maximum download speed. If you plan to download quickly and then upload for a while afterwards, you may want to set your download speed to roughly 50% while leeching and then 100% while see |

I didn't know where to ask this, so I hope I'm in the right place - I've downloaded a few bit torrents recently - never did that before and jumped in. Yesterday someone asked to have a file seeded - Freddie's Loves. I opened the file and clicked seed indefinitely but clearly that's not the correct way to do it since uploading remained a 0%. Please help me. I don't want to be a leech, but I can't figure out how to share what I've received. |
Ginger01 14.01.2006 13:37 |
Seeding is easy - simply open your torrent and point it at your (completed) file, just like you did when the file was incomplete and you were downloading. You will see zero download speed (normal, since you are not downloading anything) but hopefully you will see an upload speed from people who are downloading your file. You are now seeding. Depending on the BT client you are using you might have to make some adjustments to the settings - if you have put "seed indefinitely" (in terms of time)this is fine. In terms of volume you might want to set your client to 500% (or even more). Simple, isn't it? Hope this is of help. |

I have a seeding question. I just finished downloading the Vienna and Caracas DVD torrents and am now seeding both. What I don't understand is why, if there are peers for each, one uploads at 34KBs while the other only goes at either 1KB or none at all. Am I doing something wrong? Two things : 1. Find the thread with the torrent you downloaded and add a message asking for seeders. 2. If someone says they are seeding but you don't see any evidence of this you might have a problem with your client. Try utorrent (link which generally works very well here. Hope this helps! |

I do not think you lose your unfinished torrents when you switch client as long as you do not move the files into other folders on your hard drive. The client (uTorrent) should hash the files and resume the download. |

YourValentine 21.09.2007 06:22 |
The speed depends on the number of seeders, your connection and other applications you run on your PC, for example DC ++. |

I've consistently had connection problems - it takes days to connect to torrents that are being seeded, even when seeders are definitely online,a nd sometime it never happens at all. Any ideas what could be causing the problems? |
xaxaxx 12.12.2007 11:03 |
Well, there really is a problem with the QZ tracker. I'll start by giving a little background information in the shape of a simplified description of what happens when your client (uTorrent, or Azureus, or whatever you use) communicates with the tracker. I only mention the stuff that is relevant here, there is really much more taking place while communicating. There are two basic types of communication between you and the tracker: scraping and announcing. When you scrape the tracker, you request (and get) information about how many seeders (with a complete set of files for the torrent) and "peers" (with an incomplete set of the files) the tracker knows about. These are the numbers that appear between brackets in your torrent client. When you announce, the tracker receives and registers your IP address (and the port you use for incoming connections), and the tracker sends you a list of IP addresses for the other peers for that torrent. Then it is up to the peers to connect to each other - there can be connection problems that have nothing to do with the tracker, and there can be slow speeds that have absolutely nothing to do with the tracker. Most bittorrent problems have to do with peer communication, not client - tracker communication. If and when a connection is established with another peer, it will show up in your client as a number outside of the brackets in the seeder or "peer" column. Now to the problem. It has happened several times that I haven't managed to connect to any peers for QZ torrents, even though I see them in those brackets, while torrents from other trackers work fine. Then all of a sudden, the QZ tracker will "kick in" and the torrents work as expected. It seems completely arbitrary. There is no telling when it will work and when it will not. Most of the time I use uTorrent for QZ torrents, but I have also loaded them in Azureus once in a while. It does not matter which client I use, which is not surprising since uTorrent and Azureus are both well-behaved clients. (Less well-behaved clients may cause problems because of poor implementation of the bittorrent protocol.) Right now I am in one of those "can't connect" phases again. This time I decided to see what is going on by starting a couple of QZ torrents in Azureus and then check the log. (There is an option to have a very detailed log file created as Azureus runs - you don't have that option in uTorrent.) The problem is what I was beginning to suspect it was: even though my client sends an announce to the tracker, all I get is a scrape. I am told how many peers there are, but the tracker does not send me any IP addresses. Since I can leave the torrents open for days without making any connections, I suspect that the tracker doesn't register my IP address either. It treats my announce as if I were scraping. There is nothing I, or any other user in this situation, can do about this other than wait and hope that the tracker decides to reply properly to an announce, as long as you use a decent client (like uTorrent) from the start. It would be interesting to know if any admin has noticed this, though, and if there is possibly something that could be done about it. ;-) |

FANTASTIC post ! FINALLY somebody who really CARES about problems. I unfortunatelly have no idea what's going on, but when this happens to me, usually the option "Update tracker" in uTorrent helps me to start the torrent. I don't know if this fact helps you somehow, because I have no idea what EXACTLY this option does :-( |

Thanks for the kind words and the advice, pittrek! Good to know that SOMEBODY ELSE cares. :) Yes, updating the tracker may sometimes help. What you are actually doing when you click "update tracker" is making a so-called manual announce. Since the tracker sometimes responds properly when you announce, this certainly might help. I did not want to recommend it, though. This is why: You normally announce once every 30 minutes to the QZ tracker - the interval is set by the tracker. (It is one of those other things that happen when you communicate with the tracker.) The reason for the interval is to keep the load on the tracker down - every announce uses some resources. The QZ tracker is already showing signs of being overloaded at times. If you look at the icons in uTorrent, you will notice that they will go red once in a while, with an arrow pointing upwards or downwards depending on whether you are seeding or downloading. That suggests that the tracker could not respond to an announce - a typical sign of overload (or other connection problems). In fact, I wonder if overload is what is causing the problems with the mere scrape response to announces, too. Anyway, the conclusion is that you may of course try announcing manually (updating the tracker) a few times, but don't do it too often. If a lot of people do it, the problems may in the end go worse. :( |

Ok, I have a technical question regarding seeding. I am using a laptop with a small hard drive to download my concerts too, then ideally moving them over to my vast USB hard drive. I cannot download straight to the drive, but when I move them over, can I still seed them from the new location? |
xaxaxx 21.01.2008 18:09 |
Yes, you can. You just need to re-target the torrents - how to do that works slightly different for different clients. In uTorrent, stop the torrent (right-click and choose "Stop"), move the folder with the files to the new location, right-click the torrent and choose "Advanced - Set download location..." and browse to the folder with the files. If, for example, you moved a folder called "Queen - 1982-08-13 Chicago, USA [FLAC]", that's the one you should browse to. In order to be extra careful, you can right-click the torrent again and choose "Force re-check". The client should end up saying that the torrent is 100% done. Then it's time for the final right-click, choose "Start", and you're back seeding. :) |

Ah, good to hear that it worked! :) (And, yes, I agree - re-checking a DVD feels like it takes ages.) |

Can anyone suggest a free program that would help me burn the Houston '77 DVD torrent that went up a while ago? I've been trying to burn it to a DVD, but most of the programs like NERO cost money and I need something free. I tried using DVD flick and was actually really happy with how simple it was and it worked okay. However, the person who put the DVD together had a really great menu page with chapters and scene selections. I would hate to lose those, but DVD Flick just burns it staight out, and the 'title page' I guess you could call it and the scene selections don't work, they are just another chapter that I have to fast forward through to get to the actual concert. Any suggestions of a different program I could use to keep it all together like I got it with the menu options that I can actually click on? |

My Bit Comet is very slow for download torrent...How can do for encrase speed? Thanks! |
tjbarrett96 02.09.2008 12:09 |
Yesterday, I had a download speed of over 65 kB/s, with only one or two seeders! Today, the highest I can get is 30. Does anyone know why my client did that? Oh, and my upload speed was around 14 kB/s, and now I can't even get it above 1 kB/s. Please help! |

Can someone explain what the downward arrow at the top right of screen is showing when I am logged in and hover over it? It doesn't appear to be my share ratio [/img] |

Message from the tracker: mandatory announce parameter info_hash in query missing Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Cheers! |

I try to download by torrent (did this on other things for a long time) Well, I see that there are seeds for every file but I don't get any connection (it works with other trackers quite fine) So any suggestion what I might need to change? E. g. a special port which works better for Queenzone? Fast help would be appreciated especially as nobody knows how long there are seeders! |
