Queen / The Clash / Ian Dury and the Blockheads / Matumbi / The Pretenders / The Specials / The Who / Elvis Costello / Rockpile / Wings / Rockestra Concerts For The People of Kampuchea Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK 26. - 29. December 1979 Lineage : AUD source (Queen) (AQ) : AUD > master tape > ? > "Complete Kampuchea Concert" (Gypsy Eye) bootleg > FLAC > WAV > Cool Edit Pro (hiss reduction on several tracks, speed correction, equalisation) > WAV VID source (Queen) (VQ) : PRO master > VHS(lower gen) > DVD(x) > WAV > Cool Edit Pro (equalisation, downsampling from 48kHz to 44.1 kHz) > WAV VID source (The Who) (VW) : PRO master > ? > Youtube > mp4 > WAV VID source (rest) (V) : PRO master > Japan TV broadcast > DVD > WAV SBD source 1 (S1) : SBD multitrack master > "Concert For Kampuchea" LP > WAV SBD source 2 (S2) : SBD multitrack master > ? > Maxell XL-1 production cassettes > Nakamichi CR-7A (azimuth adjusted) > Sound Devices USBPre2 (24/96 Audacity 2.0 capture) > iZotope MBIT + convert to 16/44.1kHz wav > Peak Pro XT(pitch correction, subtle tweaks, edit, index) > xACT 2.21 > FLAC > WAV > Cool Edit Pro (speed correction) > WAV AUD source (The Clash) (AC) : AUD > master > ? > "White Man In Hammersmith Odeon" bootleg > xAct (flac) > WAV > Cool Edit Pro 1.2 (remastering) > FLAC level 6 Explanation about lineage info: If I write e.g. [AQ] it means the whole song is taken from the Queen audience recording. If I write e.g. [AQ/VQ] it means the whole song is a MATRIX of the audience Queen recording and the video Queen recording. If I write e.g. [AQ -> AQ/VQ] it means the beginning of the song is taken from the audience Queen recording and during the song it changes to a matrix of the 2 sources Part I - Queen There are 2 existing sources for the Queen gig from December 26. The first one is audience recording. It has really excellent sound quality and it's virtually complete (there are a few cuts between songs, but musically it's complete). The main problem is that it was recorded from a distance, so most of the time you can hear the audience much louder than the band. The speed is also fluctuating, it's nothing major as 99.99% of the people wouldn't notice it. The only reason why "I" noticed the speed issues is that I synced it to the "other" source :) The best circulating copy is on the Gypsy Eye bootleg "Complete Kampuchea Concert". I took a FLAC rip (probably shared on Queenzone, I don't really remember), converted the files to WAV and "remastered" it. "Remastering" means track by track speed correction, sometimes volume raising (e.g. during Brian's speeches before the acoustic songs or Silent Night) and the unpopular step - occasional hiss reduction - I reduced the hiss only in the parts where it was extremely annoying (e.g. in the parts where I raised the volume so it became more apparent). The second source is the video source. Various different copies of a bootleg VHS->DVD transfer are circulating, their quality varies between "piece of shit" and "pretty good". They're also differently edited. Audio rips of this video are also circulating separately from the video, also released on bootlegs (e.g. Crazy Duck). The best copy I heard was the one I received for the purpose of this merge/compilation from Mr. GhostWithASmile (thanks, man). It's also the most complete version I've heard, but it still misses the taped intro, most of Jailhouse Rock, If You Can't Beat Them, most of Mustapha, the last verse of Get Down Make Love, almost everything of Spread Your Wings, the complete KYA/Brighton Rock medley, the audience impromptu version of CLTCL,almost everything from Bohemian Rhapsody, and the encore gaps. I assumed that this recording has the correct speed, so I matched the audience recording to this (again in Cool Edit Pro). There are 2 soundboard sources available. The first one comes from an obscure 1980 LP called "Concert For Kampuchea" which included performances from (almost) all artists performing on this "mini festival". The LP features "Now I'm Here". The second source appeared online in late 2014 and includes "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". Disc 1 01. Audience and God - Thunderbolts and lightning [tape intro] [AQ] 02. Queen - Jailhouse Rock [AQ -> AQ/VQ] 03. Queen - We Will Rock You (fast) [AQ/VQ] 04. Queen - Let Me Entertain You [AQ/VQ] 05. Queen - Somebody To Love [AQ/VQ] 06. Queen - If You Can't Beat Them [AQ] 07. Queen - Mustapha [AQ -> AQ/VQ] 08. Queen - Death on Two Legs [AQ/VQ] 09. Queen - Killer Queen [AQ/VQ] 10. Queen - I'm In Love With My Car [AQ/VQ] 11. Queen - Get Down, Make Love [AQ/VQ -> AQ -> AQ/VQ] 12. Queen - You're My Best Friend [AQ/VQ] 13. Queen - Save Me [AQ/VQ] 14. Queen - Now I'm Here [AQ/VQ/S1] 15. Queen - Don't Stop Me Now [AQ/VQ] 16. Queen - Spread Your Wings [AQ/VQ -> AQ] 17. Freddie Mercury / Brian May - Love Of My Life [AQ/VQ] 18. Queen - '39 [AQ/VQ] Disc 2 01. Queen - Keep Yourself Alive [AQ] 02. Roger Taylor - Percussion Solo [AQ] 03. Brian May - Silent Night [AQ] 04. Brian May - Guitar Solo [AQ] 05. Queen - Brighton Rock (reprise) [AQ] 06. Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love [AQ/VQ/S2] 07. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody [AQ -> AQ/VQ] 08. Queen - Tie Your Mother Down [AQ/VQ] 09. Queen - Sheer Heart Attack [AQ/VQ] 10. Queen - We Will Rock You [AQ/VQ] 11. Queen - We Are The Champions [AQ/VQ] 12. Queen - God Save The Queen [AQ/VQ] Part II - The Clash (December 27) The main source of the Clash recording is an excellent audience recording, released on the "White Man at Hammersmith Odeon" bootleg. This recording was remastered (not by me) and shared online. Two soundboard sources exists too, the film of the gig contains "Armagiddeon Time" and the new compilation tape which was shared on various web sites in late 2014/early 2015 contains Bankrobber and London Calling. For these 3 songs I created a matrix, the rest of the songs is taken directly from the remastered audience recording. Also the audience recording ends with an interesting ending - the original version of "Dancing In The Streets" plays through the PA system, a lot of people talk and there is also a bit of an interview with "somebody". Any idea who it might be? I read in the notes to the original audience recording that it's Jonesy, but it doesn't sound like him. Does anybody have a clue who it is? Disc 3 01. The Clash - Concert intro [AC] 02. The Clash - Clash City Rockers [AC] 03. The Clash - Brand New Cadillac [AC] 04. The Clash - Safe European Home [AC] 05. The Clash - Jimmy Jazz [AC] 06. The Clash - White Man In Hammersmith Palais [AC] 12. The Clash - Stay Free [AC] 13. The Clash - Bankrobber [AC/S2] 14. The Clash - Janie Jones [AC] 15. The Clash - Complete Control [AC] 16. Part III - The Best of the Rest Unfortunately the only complete concert recordings I have found over the years are from Queen, The Clash and probably The Who (I'm still searching for a confirmation that the Who recording is complete). But I have "bits" of the other bands performances and luckily all of them are excellent soundboard recordings. All the sources are mentioned above, the 1980 LP, the compilation film, and the unofficial compilation shared online. The track order was taken from various sources, many of them were contradicting each other, so I can't guarantee the order is correct, if somebody can give me more information or even audience recordings, I'd be very grateful. I am especially searching for recordings of Ian Dury and The Specials. The Who show is taken from another source - youtube. Which means while it sounds pretty good it's also lossy as hell and I'm not sure if it's complete (the setlists I found online were again contradicting each other). I have all the songs which are written on MOST of the online setlists I found, but it means nothing. Disc 4 01. Ian Dury and The Blockheads - Blackmail Man [S2] 02. DON'T - bootleg this. It was a charity show dammit ! - distribute this in any lossy format. I would even prefer if this wouldn't go outside Queenzone - sell Thanks to - all the bands - all people who created the audience recordings - GhostWithASmile for lending me his source for this merge - everybody involved in bringing the soundboard sources of all bands to Queenzone, you know who you are (I unfortunately don't :-( ) - Ale Solan for the cover art Can somebody - identify the person talking to the taper at the end of the Clash recording ? - identify the person at the end of the Matumbi recording - and mainly transcribe what is he saying? The only thing I could understand was "fucking" :-) - let me know if you find other sources which are either upgrades or contain any songs from any artists which are not on this compilation? Please note - there are a few "imperfections" on this recording. They serve as "watermarks". 99% of you won't notice them (or all of them), they're very subtle and not distracting. I'm sorry, but after basically everything I shared here in the last 10 years or so was bootlegged, even my previous edition of this concert (just the Queen part) was bootlegged as Play The Silent Night. I just want to know how far this compilation will go... |

But the bootleggers haven't come up with a new Queen tape in a couple years now. So it remains astounding that their business model is still functioning, which essentially amounts to asking people to pay for things that can entirely be found elsewhere for free. |

Thank you so much for all your hard work! A few questions: I haven't listened through the whole Queen set, but I noticed it's a little shorter than your previous version. What's missing just out of curiosity? What exactly are these watermarks? Is there any difference in the sound quality of the audience tape between this and the previous version? Is there a secret non-watermarked version for a few selected trusted individuals? (jk) |

Unless I forgot some gap between songs. Nothing should be "intentionally" missing. I'm glad you don't know what I meant with the "watermarks" :) No, there's no "non-watermarked version". Yes, it's (almost) completely different. A different equalization for the audience source, a new video source (better and longer), new soundboard sources, better speed correction, better merge/matrix process... |

Thanks for this amazing work! About your question about the outro of the Clash: Watch this website, it is pretty hard to find but it is a Queenlive.ca for The Clash: link "The White Men CD release includes an Outroduction track, which sheds some light on the taper(s) of this excellent recording. Bob Gruen blew his bugle intro as The Clash hit the stage (as he had done at Acklam Hall) and an American voice is heard asking the taper “How was that? Marvellous Complete Control, did you hear my bugle?..when I played that trumpet”. Bob, as it must have been, talks to the taper about their band, touring and when they will release their third LP. They also confirm they will be there the next night for Wings. The tapers were not Clash fans as they say Complete Control was the only decent song performed. It is very likely that Bob would have been backstage and therefore it makes it even more likely that the tapers were backstage or how else would they have captured such an excellent sound? But who were they, does anyone know? Certainly the tapers deserve a vote of thanks from the thousands of Clash fans who over the years have enjoyed listening to this excellent Clash performance which while lacking the mania and frequent chaos of the earlier punk years makes up for it with professional, pace, precision and controlled power". "The White Men CD includes an “outroduction” of Barry “Scratchy” Myers reminding the audience of the upcoming 16 Tons Tour, an announcement about parking in the nearby Old Folk’s Home (!) and the afore mentioned dialogue with Bob Gruen and our esteemed taper. " Bob Gruen is a photograph specialized in rock acts and was very close to the Clash at this time. |

Many thanks, Pittrek ! These concerts are some of my favourite of all-time. Queen and the Clash were at their artistic peaks, as were the Pretenders, Ian Dury and others. Given your excellent track record, I am sure the watermarks do not affect the integrity of the sound (ideally, a tiny modification of audience noise would surely suffice). With respect, though, I think you are wrong to have converted the Youtube Who audio (128kbps) to lossless, I'd have left it in mp3 format myself. False upgrading to lossless is not only a waste of disc/storage space but is misleading to people who just see the FLAC or WAV nomenclature and not the lineage.... I know some folk hate mp3/lossy, but lets call a spade a spade, so to speak... The 128kbps sounds OK-to-good, very similar to the BBC iPlayer output for Radio 2 and BBC6 Music. Anything less than 128 does sound a bit "lacking"/poor to my ears... Apart from that minor criticism, well done ,great job ! |

Wauw nice work ! Thanks. I quite dislike those soundboard feeds like on Earls Court , Hyde Park ( I cannot enjoy the video due to it's watery sounding audio) , and of course the Hammy 79 one. I always wondered .... is it possible .... could it be possible to make a simultain merge of the audio and the bootleg.... Seems to be a awfull lot of work... but is this technically possible ? |
pittrek 21.03.2015 15:20 |
Yes, it's possible, I started to work on Earls Court twice already but I always gave up because the available audience recording is crap. I couldn't hear any of my "synchronization points" in it. Hyde Park merge of AUD/VID sources is done and I think it was already shared |

Do you mean: mixing the audience from the audience recording + bass boost or drums + the rest from the soundboard recording? It could be quite hard (depending of the audience recording but make an excellent recording). But if you mean syncing both tracks without all that hard work, it could be easiest but the result would be quite weird, I think. |

it's not just on the vocals. There's a certain doubling audible thanks to the sources drifting out of sync ever so slightly. It's not on the audience version and not on the TV audio. It's really off-putting. |

now those are probably natural, but i'm talking about a doubling sound where there isn't any on the standalone sources brought on by the recordings noticeably drifting out of sync. . |

Get Down Make Love - I hear absolutely no problems, the song sounds exactly as it was supposed to sound. Which part did you have a problem with? Now I'm Here - if you are talking about the echoes I think you are talking complain to Trip Khalaf or the person who mixed the official LP. I learned to like the echo after a few listenings. If you're talking about the middle instrumental section, it sounds "weird" for a few seconds, but that's how it sounds when you join the three sources together, and still you hear a part of it in the LP mix too. We Are The Champions - this is one of the cases which I wrote about earlier - I know it could be done better, but it's just a few seconds long (if you're talking about the thing I think you're talking about), so I decided to keep it there as a sort of a "watermark". I "may" try to re-do the last two songs if I have time |
peckery 27.03.2015 04:19 |
So sad you seem to have to have mutilated the sound in order to protect your pride, Pittrek. I'm going to delete my copy of your remaster now. You should have put the "watermark" in the audience cheering, surely? I admire your enthusiasm though! I hope you haven't mutilated the Clash concert as well.... > but it's just a few seconds long (if you're talking about the thing I think you're talking about), so I decided to keep it there as a sort of a "watermark". >I "may" try to re-do the last two songs if I have time |
pittrek 27.03.2015 04:27 |
So sad you seem to have to have mutilated the sound in order to protect your pride, Pittrek. What the hell makes you think I've done something like that??? In the case I haven't made it clear to somebody - there is no "mutilation". NONE of the things were done intentionally. However they were KEPT because I didn't have the time/energy/motivation to re-do it - I considered it to be "good enough" . If I like something I have no reason to spend another x hours on re-working it. As I said because there are people here who DON'T consider it to be "good enough" I am thinking about re-doing the last tracks if I find the time for it. |

OK, I'm sorry, I was too hard on you, Pittrek. But as you have admitted, there could be some distortion/inconsistency/blemish/aberration in the sound. I understand that you want to know if your work is being sold or shared without due credit, but I'm sure a watermark/identifier could be inserted into speech/crowd noise between songs - just a millisecond of dropped volume in the waveform would not be noticed by human ears... |

pittrek wrote: Get Down Make Love - I hear absolutely no problems, the song sounds exactly as it was supposed to sound. Which part did you have a problem with?for example the first "get down make love" that Freddie sings, in the audience version there's no signs of echoes but there are in the video source... I never noticed this before, in this case I prefer the audience version.... :) pittrek wrote: Now I'm Here - if you are talking about the echoes I think you are talking complain to Trip Khalaf or the person who mixed the official LP. I learned to like the echo after a few listenings. If you're talking about the middle instrumental section, it sounds "weird" for a few seconds, but that's how it sounds when you join the three sources together, and still you hear a part of it in the LP mix too. You're right but, again, this is not what people heard during the concert because in the audience version there's no trace of all that echo |

i wish those were what i am complaining about. This seems to be an updated version of the old matrix with all its faults. It's horribly off-sync at times and if that's a watermark, Jesus, then it's not the way to do it. This just sounds half-assed and i think you can do better, Pittrek. It ruins the sound completely, making it a waste of bandwidth. |

i don't know, i've yet to do a full matrix, but i can still tell it sounds wrong. |

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. If you don't like it that's your business, but its not like there aren't other versions for you to choose from. Nobody's forcing you to listen to only what pittrek has very generously provided. |
The Real Wizard 27.03.2015 20:15 |
But we can't become a bunch of yesmen. It is indeed OK to be accurately critical even if you don't have the tools to create a replacement yourself. If that weren't the case, then nobody would be allowed to review films, books or albums on the basis that they aren't directors, authors or record producers. Food for thought .. ? |
tcc 27.03.2015 20:37 |
I think it is the rough manner of criticizing the work that made some of us feel bad for Pittrek. Analysis of the work can be done in a more constructive manner. For example, I would ask why is it like this rather than condemn it straightaway. |
MERQRY 27.03.2015 20:44 |
Hi Pittrek, nice compilation! I love that gigs for Kampuchea. Excelent indded... and not only the queen one but also the others bands, like The Clash were fabulous. I have a question, did you use the transfer from the "people of kampuchea" lp that i have sent you a time ago via PM here? Just curious, i have no problem if you used it. |
Mrmarioanonym 28.03.2015 07:24 |
i didn't intend to insult, i just don't mince words. this isn't meant to offend anyone, it's (it being me being a little too direct at times) a flaw of mine i occasionally tend to forget may not always be appropriate. Pittrek, if this offended you, i'm sorry, i didn't mean to. I do respect most of your work on here. It's really good for the most part. |
pittrek 29.03.2015 14:03 |
I have no problems with criticism, but it has to be constructive. Comments like "waste of bandwidth" will just piss me off, and will help nobody. It would help me if you could write down some sort of list of things which you consider to be errors. I remember 2 things - the piano intro to Mustapha and the first verse of Champions. I don't like Now I'm Here, but it sounds as it's supposed to sound - except the guitar middle which I'm also considering to re-do. Merqry - no idea. I have several transfers of the LP, I used the first I found. The Real Wizard - as a huge fan of both Mr. Plinkett and the Nostalgia Critic I agree with you |

The compilation is the the best we can have until QPL decides to release it in full form. Thanks again for this hard work Pete! ;) |

This is a monumental share. Thanks for you hard work on this Pittrek. One of the best Queen gigs, and other bands were great too. Lately i've been listening to a lot of Beatles/McCartney so i'm really going to enjoy the Wings performance here. Thanks again! |

I almost missed it. Thanks for you work pittrek, Woooov. I can't download from mega, don't know why. Any chance for a torrent anyone. |

CD 7 seems to be missing, can someone re-up it? please? Thank you, Eric |
Mrmarioanonym 16.12.2016 10:36 |
hey Pittrek, the whole Wings performance is available as an audience tape. link the specific download: link VERY similar sound quality to the Queen tape. Paul is in the worst shape he was live in the 1970s (thin, hoarse), but still great compared to 1989/1990 or today. Apparently he was smoking like a chimney at the time. |

Mrmarioanonym 17.12.2016 14:08 |
he's even better in 1973, actually, but not by much. I'd still say that Wings Over America and Rockshow show Paul at his peak. I rewatched Rockshow on Blu-Ray last week (and it's not just Paul's vocals, i'd say the whole line-up was fantastic, also Joe English is fun to watch as he is clearly having the time of his life). |
peckery 19.12.2016 14:15 |
Many thanks for the link to that Wings 79 show, Mr Mario! It is indeed a very good quality recording, like the Clash and Queen ones. If only all the concerts could/would be released officially... |
jabbo5150 22.12.2016 12:05 |
The Detroit Paul shows I saw in 2012 and in 2015 were a lot better vocally than in 1989 in my opinion. Doing less shows has helped his voice a ton. |

pittrek wrote: The second source is the video source. I assumed that this recording has the correct speed, so I matched the audience recording to this (again in Cool Edit Pro).Does that mean that Mr. Ghostwithasmile doesn't have a full video of this concert? If his copy misses all those parts, including almost everything of SYW? So the short 23 sec. snippet that he uploaded on his youtube channel is everything he has? |
