There is quite a bit of negativity regarding Hot Space, and with arguably good reason. I just listened to it start to finish, and like it quite a bit. I am a HUGE Queen fan, but had never given it its fair chance. What is your favorite song from Hot Space? Face it, its still Freddie, Brian, John, and Roger :) |
Sebastian 27.07.2012 11:36 |
At this point, perhaps Action This Day or Put Out the Fire. |

I was one of the fans that grew up listening to all the previous Queen LP's before Hot Space and when it came out I was also one of those fans that dismissed it because I was used to hearing Tie Your Mother Down or Liar or Brighton Rock etc. I was worried at the time that this was NOT a rock album and wondered if they would ever get back to the old style we were used to prior to Hot Space.. BIG shock to a 16 year old hardcore fan. Anyway, Under pressure has to be my favorite tune off that LP. |

Staying Power just makes me giddy. I think the rock side would have needed an entirely different "sound" to hold up as quality rock. As it is, it sounds too much like "New Wave" aka the throwaway stuff from The Game. Queen rock sounds best when it's fat. |

I sent Dr May an email a couple of years ago, asking if he and Roger would go back in the studio and rock up Hot Space, like the live versions. He responded that he didn't want to go back in time and if we wanted to hear rock versions, they were out there on boots. I even suggested calling it 'Hot Space Rocks'. Still think it would work if they ever got the bug. Oh, and Cool Cat isn't @Flash Jazz just my opinion though for what its worth |
horse feathers 27.07.2012 18:01 |
Under Pressure, obviously. But as for the rest of the album, Dancer, IMO is a real gem from Queen and seems to get a lot of bad comments. But for me, out of all the funky stuff on the album, this is the best and in my opinion second only to Under Pressure from the full Hot Space album. I would have loved to hear this track live. Cool Cat is awful, Flash Jazz, we are entitled to our own opinions. |
horse feathers 27.07.2012 18:04 |
Toon_86, that is disapointing, but not surprising really. Great idea though, this summer could have been spent rocking up Hot Space, and revamping older tracks, instead of this ludicrous tour they have just done. |
Sebastian 27.07.2012 18:07 |
When it comes to something like this, they 'don't want to live in the past.' Yet, when it comes to using the Queen name + logo + repertoire, it's OK to 'live in the past.' |
horse feathers 27.07.2012 18:17 |
I'm sober, so no excuse for what I'm about to put, haha. How about Brian putting the stems up for these tracks and letting others have a go at 'rocking' them up? I know... I've never really been good with reality. Good put well pointed out, Sebastian, BTW. |
Wiley 27.07.2012 18:27 |
I love Hot Space to bits. My favorite Queen song (ever) has to be Under Pressure. I love Staying Power and even Body Language for what they are - fun tracks with a great groove. I enjoy the studio versions as much as I do the live versions. I can't understand how people don't like "Dancer". Is it the lyrics? I think it's got a great mix of Rock and Funk, and it's an excellent example of how all of Hot Space should have sounded. |
horse feathers 27.07.2012 18:37 |
Wiley, when have lyrics ever mattered in a Queen song? Actually, that could be the reason why other people don't see Queen for the truly terrific band they were. Well up until 1980, at least. |
Toon_86 27.07.2012 19:00 |
And of course they didn't think twice about revisiting a 1983 solo album for a 1995 release, remixed Under Pressure and now going back to the FM + MJ stuff. I still have a feeling something like revisiting old stuff will happen. Hot Space to me always seems the obvious choice. |

So Queen is mainly famous for making anthems, does that mean anthems are all they're good at making? Not at all actually. And Staying Power isn't a bad song at all. You're allowed to dislike it, but it's a dickheaded thing to do to criticize others enjoyment of it. What a ridiculously narrow minded post... My favourite Hot Space tracks are Las Palabras and Back Chat. I love all of the live versions, but I'm going strictly by how they're presented on the album. That's obviously not including Under Pressure, which isn't really a 'Hot Space track' as such, it was thrown in there at the last minute and didn't follow it's theme at all. |

under pressure. first i disliked it very much but by now it's one of my favorite queen songs. i love the "give-love" section because whilst fading out it still remains in your head and gives the following part a lot more depth. oh. and "dancer". i don't know why. but every now and then i like to play this track because it's some kind of... different and sums up the whole "hot space"-character in a funny way, i think. i like the sample in the outro :-) overall there are many good attempts on hot space song wise, but i really cannot stand that early 80s production-sound at all. "put out the fire" is more of a demo to me. "life is real" is quite nice but not groundbreaking. the rest of the album... exists. |

If ever Queen made a stand-alone single, that was it (closely followed by CLTCL). UP is, of course, a fantastic song and it really makes me wish Queen & Bowie had collaborated a lot more (as long as they produced songs like UP and not Cool Cat!) |

It's my favourite Queen album, and I am listening to the SACD right now. My favourite Queen song is actually "Back Chat" from the album. I live in hope that eventually they will do a proper expanded edition of this album with the remixes and demos on it. The "Back Chat" demo I feel is better than the album version. |

BrianMayKicksAss 29.07.2012 06:02 |
My favorites are: "Staying Power" = For the sole reason that the Bowl version kicks butt! "Dancer" = Bloody catchy, funky feel done right. "Action This Day" = Love the vocals between Freddie and Roger "Put Out the Fire" - Heaviest song on the album "Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)" = Beautiful! Honors the amazing John Lennon "Las Palabras de Amor (The Words of Love)" = Beautiful! "Under Pressure" = Introduced me to some of Bowie's greatest work. I knew of Bowie before :Pressure," but not most of his songs. Independent of the Hot Space sessions, so I don't consider it a normal HS song. |
Biggzy10 29.07.2012 10:05 |
"Las Palabras de Amor" - easily as good as "Save Me" "Dancer" - I never understood why people said Hot Space was "funk done wrong", this song is pretty funky and it sounds great. Really catchy. |
Sebastian 30.07.2012 06:24 |
I think Dancer is a very good song but it was recorded rather poorly, vocals aside. Las Palabras is to Save Me, in my opinion, what a two-story building is to the Burj Khalifa. |

While Under Pressure is one of my favorite, if not the favorite, Queen songs, I think of it separately from the album. I don't know why, maybe because it doesn't really sound like much of the rest of the album. Anyway, I'd say Cool Cat is my favorite, with Life Is Real in a close second. |
daaydo 02.08.2012 14:37 |
of course Under Pressure was the hit off that album- and I do think a lot of work was put into that song and I respect it. That was Queen's only collaboration which makes it special- I do think that it is an all around great song- one of their best to be honest. But besides Pressure, I enjoyed Life is Real and I liked the vibe that came off Cool Cat. Calling All Girls is also a pretty cool song. If people open their minds, it's really very far from a bad record.. |

hey, i loved what queen did with Staying Power in the 82 shows they sped it up and made it rocky. action this day is a fantastic song and backchat was always better live. before i listened to the album i didn't have high hopes for it. i put it on and liked it because it was so diferent to any other album. it's not the best album but it's not dredfull. |
Megine 03.08.2012 11:44 |

atom murray 30.11.2012 07:07 |
Hot Space is one of the most entertaining Queen albums in my mind. I really love listening to it. This album contains some of the best vocal performances of Freddie's career I must add. 'Staying Power' is a great opener with Freddie getting a new lease of life and camping it up to no end. 'Dancer' is a little bit unbelievable but, 'Back Chat' is a nice Deacon track with a great bass line. Now 'Body Language' is one hell of a sexy track. The bass line slithers and slides like a macho snake looking for prey! The boldest single the band ever released and 'Action This Day' is a great stomper that reminds me of Bowie a bit. 'Put Out The Fire' is the weakest track as this rocker is at odds with the slick pop the rest of the album portrays. Freddie's tribute to Lennon, 'Life Is Real' is a beauty and full of the sadness of ex Beatle's death. Taylor's 'Calling All Girls' is a great acoustic rocker and the live version is almost better. 'Las Palabras De Amor' is one of the best Queen love songs, and the lines 'This room is bare, This night is cold. We're far apart and I'm growing old. But while we live, we'll meet again" will touch the heart of any human that has ever been in love with the realization of who matters the most! Then we have the clunker 'Cool Cat' I don't know how cool it actually is but I like Freddie doing Diana Ross. It's fun and makes way for the immortal 'Under Pressure' which needs no comment. Hot Space is booming on the stereo as I write this and the 2011 remaster is a tougher, funkier son of a gun that sounds superb, so get it today, turn it up loud and feel proud and thankful you're favourite band committed this work to tape back in 1982! |

atom murray, you seem to like bumping up old threads. Odd part is that I remember when this was first posted. I have no idea what my favorite track is. If someone asked me right now which one I'd want to listen to, I'd say Action This Day, I suppose. 1. Action 2. Dancer 3. Life 4. Palabras 5. Chat 6. Pressure (probably would be higher if not for the tragic curse known as overplaying. Not sure, though) 7. Power (not counting the live version like other people because, you know, Hot Space is definitely not a live album) 8. Fire 9. Girls 10. Cat 11. Language (blech) |

Stelios 09.02.2014 16:20 |
Under Pressure for me, though i also dont feel it as Hot Space track. The production of it must have been be very different from the album's overall handling. Also Freddie's delivery is like he is in a completely different mind-set than he is in on the rest of the album. For instance Staying Power is very "Hot Space Freddie" and then again Under Pressure also sounds like he is really into it. But Freddie's charachter between those two is like its separated at least a decade with Pressure beeing closer to his mentality during The Miracle or even Innuendo. |

Las Palabras is good, of course Under Pressure, staying power is decent, but with a little more work could have been one Of Queen's anthems, especially lyrically. I like Back Chat, Action this day is nice, but the live version blows it away....Life if is real isn't half bad and cool cat has some weak as hell lryics but the vocal performance is possibly Freddie's best. so it's also a nice song for me for that reason...aside from Under pressure, I would say Back Chat is my Favorite. |
