She's not nearly as ugly as people say she is, simply because she doesn't look like our media's benchmark for the optimal attractive person with a pound of make-up on and all flaws airbrushed. She's a regular middle-aged woman with an absolutely gorgeous voice. Like Paul Potts, I sincerely hope she wins. |

Welcome to society. Every society at any time on this planet has judged people by their appearances. It started long before Hollywood and the music industry and it will continue long after both of them are gone. Anyone who can sit here and honestly say that they didn't at least think "What the heck is she doing here?" when they saw her is deluding themselves. I know we all like to do that, to think that we don't do that, but we're all guilty as hell. The saddest part to me is that you know that she's going to get "made over" in order to succeed. Even if she were to win the competition; they won't let her perform as she is. They'll make her get a makeover. I Dreamed a Dream is a very difficult song to perform. It's basically written for a belter, but it's got the super low section in the middle. I've heard lots of Fantines who have popped that note up simply because they cannot get it. It's very difficult to get that low note out and still have it heard. She did an amazing job, and she has got one amazing voice. Kudos and best of luck to her! |

I agree with Maggie. Most people judge others by the looks and in these talent shows people are usually younger and dress more fashionable, so there was a very distinctive "wtf" atmosphere in the audience when Susan Boyle walked on the stage. It's unfair to condemn the young woman who was caught sneering like she was the only one who felt that way. I have seen countless comments about "bad hair days", "dress disasters" and "unshaved armpits" about the greatest singers and actors of our times, so please do not tell me that people do not judge by the looks. However, I do not believe that the jurors were all that surprised, certainly they heard her sing before she appeared on TV and the whole display of amazement looked very staged for me. I hope Susan Boyle comes out of this as her natural self and not bent and twisted to the mainstream modern taste. |

Although I have to admit it must be nice to be able to tell yourself that you didn't at least think "Gee...that's interesting" as she was profiled and walked out on stage. I had that kind of innocence and idealism once. As far as her talent goes, that of course is a matter for public opinion. I think it's unfair that anyone who goes into the show in one of the major female parts is constantly compared to Henshall or Salonga. While I won't argue that they gave brilliant performances (as of course, they did), because they are basically the originators of the roles people will always compare negatively to them simply because of that fact. Sort of like how people compare Paul Rogers with Freddie in a negative way. All I can say is that, if you remove Henshall from the equation and let Susan stand on her own merits, she did an amazing job. |

If those are the standards he is to be judged by, then fair enough, he's brilliant. But he's been on telly now, he won money, he'll probably want to make more money out of it... surely he's not going to be judged as an amateur anymore, but measured up against people who are *really* good at that kind of singing. In which case, he doesn't warrant much of a comparison.I'm not trying to be an ass by saying that but really... that's what bugs me about these talent shows. @ Freya - you are absolutely right. Unfortunately, you are in a minority. Not many people think for themselves, most are manipulated by the fashion "dos and don'ts" forced upon people by TV and internet. Btw, I think that Maggie belongs to those who are not easily manipulated, she only described the phenomenon. I never watch these shows, so I cannot tell how I would have felt seeing Susan Boyle there (I only watched it on YouTube after reading about it) - I hate the abusive nature of such shows in general. I also agree with Zebonkla about Paul Potts, he is a very third rate tenor and only became so popular through the TV hype. In the long run he won't be able to maintain the "star" status based just on his voice. |

Indeed...thanks Barb. Even if I had TV, I wouldn't watch those shows. I can honestly say that I have NEVER seen a full episode of American Idol the whole time it's been in existence. Besides, most of the "talent" that wins the show is never heard from again. Does anyone even remember the guy who won the 2nd season? He released one song, and promptly vanished off the face of the earth. And what about that guy with the Soul Patrol? Never hear from him anymore either. Granted the show actually does kick up some talent and some artists that manage to have a recording career (Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, etc.), but given the number of contestants that's within the realm of statistical chance. Besides, from clips I've seen, it seems at least on AI that in the early stages of the new season they delight in crushing people by humiliating them on a nation-wide scale. |

I heard portions of the song on the radio and it gave me goosebumps. The DJ on the radio commented that there was a lot of eye-rolling in the audience when Susan smirked and said "I want to be like Elaine Page". The DJ implied that this statement could have been construed by the audience as arrogant. Of course, her plain Jane looks do not match today's superficial standards. If Rick Astley released his one hit wonder a few years later when videos became more popular, he never would have achieved top 40 status because he looks so wimpy. |

The music industry (in particular the pop industry) is mostly interested in selling the image before the talent.
