Give it a hug from me. My nephews cat will likely get 'the needle' tomorrow, despite having thousands of dollars in vet bills thrown at it. Love them while you have them folks!! :( |

Oh, no. I hate to hear this. I'm so sorry for your nephew, his cat and you. It's so hard to let these precious little things go. I've had to do it three times in the past couple of years - the most recent being only a few months ago. I'm very sorry. I'll hug both of mine right now. |

My beloved cat Carly is going strong at 16 years but I realize our time is limited. Pets are just like people when it comes to relationships.. they either leave or die. |

My beloved kitty is dying at the moment. Her name is Rory and I've had her 12 years. A couple months ago, she was looking thinner than usual, so I took her to the vet. Bloodtests showed her kidney levels were elevated. The vet gave me a special prescription diet to give her. She liked the food well enough, and seemed to be doing okay. But I had her back in two weeks ago for another blood check, and her kidneys are slowly failing. The vet said that if we could give her fluids intravenously, that it might buy her some time. So every other day, my husband and I hang up a bag of ringers solution, and give her an iv of fluids. I didn't even know how I feel about that, as I don't want the poor dear to suffer (though she is very good about it, and she doesn't look ill, and she is as cuddly and purrs as loudly as ever.). But now yesterday she didn't eat, and she hasn't eaten today. She goes to the vet tomorrow morning, and I think its not going to be good news...I will definitely hug her, and all my other critters too. :-( |

My 14 year old German shepherd, Emma, had to be put to sleep last year. I couldn't even bear to be with her when she was euthanized. Pieter and my sister stayed with her. I was afraid I'd have a break down in the vet's office. I've got her ashes in my bedroom. Man, I miss that dog. :-( |

I understand what you're going through and I'm very sorry. I hope tomorrow's vet visit will bring happy news. If not, you can be comforted by how happy she was because of all you've done for her. They know how much we love them. And they know we'll do the right thing when we have to... because we love them too much not to. |

I'm sorry for your cat, Zebonka. That's so sad! I would go crazy if my kitty had to die! In her life (6 years, I guess) she was about to die 3 times. In the 3rd time she disappeared and we thought that she had gone to die far away. Cats do that because they dont want to die with their humans. I know it sounds riddiculous, but I stared at a Freddie pic and asked him to make my cat come back. She was out 2 weeks and then came back. |

Aww I know how you feel :( My cat Lizzy lived to the grand old age of 20. The vet was really nice about it, he came to our house to put her down which helped. Just remember, (and pardon for the cliche) it is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. |
john bodega 02.05.2007 07:06 |
Well... he only lived 7 months, but we made them as nice as possible. He got his needle this afternoon right as the sun was going down. T'was very peaceful. Thanks for the kind thoughts! |

What makes it more poignant is the sunset was very lovely down my day today. One of the ladies I work with had her kitty for 22 years. Twenty two! It was older than me! I remember crying when our first poodle was put down. I was too young to conceptualise the whole 'not coming back' thingy. |

I'm sorry to hear about this, Zebonka, but it was for the best. I'm sure the cat was suffering horribly. I've had cats since I was a very little girl, and our oldest cat was named Oliver. He was the best cat ever, and even when we got other cats (Rascal, Fluffers and Baby) I still liked Oliver the best. He was a big cat...not fat, just a big cat. Gray stripped tiger, with really pretty green eyes. Two years ago, my parents called me from home and told me he was sick, and that they were taking him to the vet. I told them to keep me posted on the situation. Two days later, they called to tell me that they had put him down, because his kidneys were failing and he was so sick that he couldn't even make it to the litter box to use it. I was mad at them for a while for not telling me, because I never got to say goodbye to Oliver. But they stayed with him while he got the needle, and they told him he seemed to understand what they were doing. He was 20 years old at the time, so he was probably more than due. Since I live in my apartment now, my parents still have Rascal (the fat one) and Baby (the anti-social one). Fluffers we had to give away because she was peeing on everything. I now have two cats in my apartment...mine is Boots, and my roommate's is Bonnie. Boots is a black and white tuxedo cat; she's about 5 and is as playful as ever! Bonnie is a Siamese with beautiful blue eyes and she's staying with me while my roomie goes back to Scotland to do research next semester. I love them both, and will go and hug them right now. I'm sorry for your loss Zebonka, but it's better than having them suffer. The right thing was done. |
john bodega 02.05.2007 11:13 |
"I'm sorry for your loss Zebonka, but it's better than having them suffer. The right thing was done." Oh - too true!! We gave him every chance; this really was the last option... He went peacefully, and quickly. Can't ask for better. |

Oh Zeb... I was able to stay disconnected until I saw him :( It's nice to see so many cat lovers here. So many seem to think they're aloof, unloving, selfish, whatever. They just don't get it. Cats are the coolest. And they can be caring. Carly knows when I'm down. I swear she's come up to lay down beside me and even put a paw on my arm when I needed it. And you guys with the liver problems.. been there too. Lost my Annie a few years ago to that. I tried force feeding, the IV hydration.. nothing worked :( |

Boots can always tell when I'm upset, because she'll come up and sit with me, curl up in my lap if I'm scrunched up on the couch or lay on my stomach if I'm laying down. Then she'll rub her face against mine until she thinks I've cheered up. I've never had a cat that couldn't tell when someone was upset and did their best to comfort them. |

Oh my, what a beautiful little guy. So sorry for your loss :-( Thanks too for the kinds words about my Rory, folks. As of right now she is still with me. She started eating yesterday. The vet says we'll take it week to week. She says I'll know when its time. I'm sure she's right. I've had to have two dogs and a kitty put down in the past. Right now I'm just enjoying her. :-) |
Deacon Fan 03.05.2007 16:42 |
If she started eating on her own I think that's a very good sign! Don't give up Janet :) I hope she pulls through :) My Annie never did try to eat on her own again. I think she knew what was going on and wanted to get it over with. Like wanting to be by herself too. The day she was almost gone, I'd stayed up all night with her and finally I just made her comfortable and she passed while I slept. I kept the little throw she was on and refuse to wash it. Silly I suppose. I guess as hard as it is to lose them, it's worth it for all the love and smiles they give. Part of the deal I suppose. |

Janet, I'm so, so sorry. I know on some level you know this, but I have to say it anyway - Rory knew how much she was loved and she knew you were doing all you could to make her comfortable and healthy. Realizing it was her time and letting her go, was the greatest gift you could have given her. It doesn't make it hurt any less, but then, that's the price we pay for all the love they bring into our lives. I'm very sorry. <hugs> |
