...other than Queen: The Early Years... I looked on Amazon.com, and this seemed to be the only one? |

If you would read this forum you would know that the best book is Georg Purvis: Queen - Complete Works |
Mr Mercury 08.03.2007 04:48 |
Completely agree, YV. Having read a lot more of this book I am finding it more facinating by the minute. |

When I just became a fan I used to read the Visual Documentary from Ken Dean. It's a structured year to year book wich sums up all the major events the band undertook. Queen as it Began (Jim Jenkins) is also a good read IMO. |

Books about Queen: link link |
Daniel Nester 12.03.2007 13:16 |
I'd be remiss not to plug my own books, God Save My Queen and God Save My Queen II. They're strange little poetic memoir books, more of a fan's notes, and not a proper band history--you won't get any new biographical info about Queen. Some people like them in the Queen fan community, I gather, and others might say "huh? this is crap." But I'm proud of 'em! |
Lester Burnham 12.03.2007 13:25 |
I have both of them, Daniel, and they're very good. |

Greg Brooks' revised Queen Live book often ends up in the music section of the book store, but it actually belongs in the fiction or comedy section... whichever meets your fancy. |

Hey there Black Queen... You do NOT want to be buying 'Queen Live: A Concert Documentary' by Greg Brooks. It's total shite. It has errors in it... things that are not correct... there are anomalies within its pages that will have you vomiting like you have never vomited before in your life. Your question was a fair one though pal!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy hunting. |

Your question was a fair one though pal!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy hunting.I want to get a good book, something not too juicy but not boring either. I heard this story from a fellow Queen fan on here about how Freddie had a party for the release of the Jazz album back in 1978, and how they had this huge huge party down in New Orleans w/strippers and midgets wrestling in mud...hilarious...but I also want to read about the serious stuff too. I just got down reading Led Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven, and that was a good book, at least to me it was. I dont want to always hear about the boring stuff...I want to hear about the fun stuff too, but most importantly---what inspired them to do the music and write the lyrics that they wrote. |

The cover articles in Mojo Magazine are probably the best for that kind of stuff. The official-type books focus more on the history and the objective facts -- where something was recorded, etc. -- and there's a couple books that focus on fandom (mine, plus a graphic novel that's coming out called Freddie and Me by Mike Dawson). But there's yet to be a book about Queen that gets inside their heads, in my opinion. Such books exist for a lot of other artists -- Hammer of the Gods (Zeppelin), Before I Get Old (Who). But Queen has always been standoffish about letting the press into their private lives, private motivations. The Mojo magazine articles are a start. They get a lot of great, honest, down-to-earth comments from Brian and Roger, and they treat the subject of Queen's music with seriousness and respect. |

Yeah...I read Stairway to Heaven, and Hammer of Gods about LZ, but I have yet to read a 'The Who' type of book...thanks a lot...I'll be sure to check out those articles... This is also why I CANT BELIEVE there is a movie coming out about them...because they always were so private to me...all of the members, even Freddie :) Isnt their a movie coming out about them? Whats the deal with this Queen: The complete works book? |

A good one is Queen: The Difinitive Biography by I think Laura Jackson. It's good and yeah. Happy reading! |
Daniel Nester 23.03.2007 10:07 |
I have to respectfully disagree about the Laura Jackson. It's worth reading and buying, sure. I have it. I mean, a complete Queen freak would buy a Queen kazoo if it came out (do they sell those?). But Jackson's book is what's called a "clip job," meaning that she basically puts together past clips and interviews and, along with a minimal amount of original reporting, makes it into a book. We all can recognize the Freddie-John-Roger-Brian quotes in books like these from past articles. It's a useful book, but not really analytical. It doesn't try to figure out where the hell this magical band Queen came from, why they wrote the songs the way they did, what was happening when they took on Roy Thomas Baker when they were finishing up Jazz. The list goes on. Come to think of it, the best source for this kind of information is in the documentary DVD that comes along with A Night At The Opera 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition. There, Brian explains how he got to the idea of "Good Company," Roger explains his drumming techniques. It's a good, serious examination of the music. |
