Queen Puebla, Mexico Estadio Cuauhtémoc October 17, 1981 This is a merge of two sources from the first night in Puebla. There are still a few parts missing between songs, but this is most likely the best quality and most complete version of this concert we'll ever hear. About 95% of the show comes from an almost excellent first generation tape, and I filled in the gaps with an inferior source. The better source was shared at Queenzone last year in mp3, but luckily I managed to track down the lossless version. Source 1 lineage: AUD > Master > 1st generation tape > WAV > CDR (1) > WAV > FLAC frontend (level 8) Source 2 lineage: AUD > Master > cassette (x) > WAV > CDR (x) > WAV > FLAC frontend (level 8) Disc 1: Speech Overture We Will Rock You (fast) Let Me Entertain You Play The Game Somebody To Love Killer Queen I'm In Love With My Car Get Down, Make Love Save Me Now I'm Here Dragon Attack Now I'm Here (reprise) Love Of My Life Disc 2: Keep Yourself Alive Drum Solo Guitar Solo Flash The Hero Crazy Little Thing Called Love Bohemian Rhapsody Tie Your Mother Down Another One Bites The Dust We Will Rock You We Are The Champions God Save The Queen Priceless moments: During the middle of NIH, Freddie reacts to the rowdy audience throwing shoes at the band: "Feels like bloody Chelsea Cobbler, I tell you!" (for those who don't know, Chelsea Cobbler is a men's shoe store in London). And at the end of the show, he says "Thank you for the shoes! Adios amigos, you motherfuckers! You bunch of tacos, goodbye!" However, it's worth noting that on the second night, these were his closing words: "Thank you for being a totally different audience tonight. We all thank you." The stories often circulate that Queen's concerts in Mexico were horrible for the band, but the bootlegs reveal that it was just the one concert in Puebla that gave them problems. Fans who attended the Monterrey show have also said their concert went smoothly. As for what happened in Mexico outside the concert venues, that's another story! Here are the links to all five parts: link link link link link later addition, the complete Now I'm Here - link Distribute these files only if they are left completely unaltered. As always with my shares, be sure that this recording is not made available at Queenzone or elsewhere in mp3 or any other lossy format. Keep lossless files lossless. Enjoy! |

<b><font color="blue">Maruga wrote: I hope you can answer me.I'm always happy to answer. :) The first link is from Oct 17, which is the same show as the one I shared. That one is also a compilation, and I took a couple pieces from that one, which is the inferior source. The majority of my copy sounds better than that one. The second link is from the second night (sometimes it's mislabeled as Oct 16). I've got a second generation recording of that night, and it sounds very good... but not quite as good as the first night. If Martin's recording is the commonly circulating one, then mine should sound a bit better. I have another copy of that show including the part with I Go Crazy, but it really doesn't sound too good. In theory, I could make a mix of those two sources, but overall, they just don't sound nearly as good as the first night. Therefore, I honestly don't think I want to share that one here, because there are many other recordings that are a lot better quality and, in my mind, more worthy of being shared. Thank you very much, Bob, for sharing this gig. I have a version of it but maybe this one is better. Still, it is great to see one of the concerts in my country available for download and in this definitive version. By the way, it's "Estadio Cuauhtémoc", not Guauhtemoc, starts with a 'c'. I hope that Ginger01 or someone else is so kind to make a torrent out of this because I click on your links and keep getting a blank page both on IE and Firefox. Thanks a lot, once again, and the best of luck on WWRY Toronto and any other projects you have :). Edit: I just read what you mention about the gigs in Mexico and I thank you for that. It's almost like we mexicans have a bad reputation for being the audience that attacked and mistreated Queen on stage. Still, I have heard nothing but good things about those gigs in 1981 from people I've known that attended to these concerts. My dad went to the Monterrey gig and he managed to get to front row. He thought it was an awesome show and has nothing but good things to say about that concert. Wiley |

Ok, now I got a bit confused. I only corrected the spelling on the word "Cuauhtémoc" without remembering or checking if the venue was correct. Estadio Cuauhtémoc is indeed on a street called "Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza" but this is a soccer stadium (World cup matches were played here both in 1970 and 1986). "Estadio Ignacio Zaragoza" is a baseball stadium and many sources, including a ticket scan in Mr. Scully's site (queenconcerts.com) and many reviews of the show online by mexican fans, claim that the concert took place here and NOT at Cuauhtémoc Stadium so the venue should read "Estadio Ignacio Zaragoza". I don't know about that baseball stadium but according to several articles and mexican people I talked to over MSN, the biggest stadium in the city (Puebla de Zaragoza) it's the Cuachtémoc stadium (49,000 approx) - unless this stadium had 100,000 capacity in the past and for safety reasons that capacity was reduced. |

Hola.. ------------- Hi.. According to the official site of the Puebla Football Club, Estadio Cuauhtémoc was built in 1968 and then enlarged in 1986. link Still I think that the Queen gig must have been in Estadio Zaragoza because of the reasons I've already mentioned and that the "100,000 attendance" claim was an exageration. Maybe the person from Puebla can tell us more about this baseball stadium because there is not a lot of info about it on the Web. :) ------ Wiley |
Wiley 26.01.2007 16:50 |
On a related note, another misconception is that Queen played Estadio Universitario in Monterrey when that stadium is in another municipality (San Nicolás de los Garza). Still, that's more like splitting hairs and a trivial thing than a fact that needs to be corrected because the stadium is within the Monterrey Metropolitan Area. Only people who live in those areas are used to say they are from "San Nicolás", "Guadalupe", "Escobedo" and others instead of saying simply Monterrey. They were once other cities or towns but it's all together now. Still, nice trivia :) Wiley |

Hello, I am positive I attended at the Queen concert on Saturday 17th October 1981 at the Estadio Ignacio Zaragoza.(Unfortunately I do not have my ticket anymore, but I do remember quite clearly it said Estadio I. Zaragoza, I bought it at a kind of Ticketmaster at that time called "Boletrònico".In fact the 5 tickets we got had the same legend). It might be a good idea to take a look at the QUEEN CONCERTS link where a scan of the ticket is found (Concertography / Queen on tour / Menu:Gluttons for Punishment / 7.10.1981 Puebla, Mexico Concert info ) link (Fortunately Mr.Scully has got such image for the Queen fans to see) Best wishes, |

Even though the ticket says what it says, I heard from someone who attended the shows that the wrong venue was printed on the tickets!
<font color="lime">Raf840 wrote: Sorry if the question is dumb or silly... But what exactly happened in Mexico when they were not playing, outside the venues? For starters, for the entire crew to get into Mexico on time, the band had to bribe the authorities at the border, because there was a limit of visas they could issue each day. I think it was 500 pounds, which was pocket change for them! Secondly, the promoter for the shows somehow got arrested, and the band had to bail him out. Third, the band didn't get paid for the second night in Puebla. It was some tax crap of some sort. Queen got fed up from everything and left Mexico, although they told the promoter they were heading off to another city for the next gig. Needless to say, the promoter was pretty upset when he found out that the band had left the country! But he made plenty of money from the shows... probably more than the band did! |

Wiley 26.01.2007 19:14 |
I didn't know the part about the band not being paid for the second gig. I knew about the bribery thing and it is a shameful reality still in these days (although not that much as 20 years ago). Of course, when you've lived here for many years you know how to make the best of it. I don't want to throw the ball at anyone but, in my country's defense (somehow), I can say that the promoter Mr. Rota was from Argentina. Still, I don't know why was he put in jail. It is very funny to listen to someone in the audience yelling at him: "pinche Argentino!" (F*ckin' argentinean). It's not what they say but the way they say it. I haven't got anything against Argentina (except during soccer matches, haha). In fact, I have argentinean friends and they are lovely people. I'm just commenting on what I've heard in the recording. Hello everybody!! I was told Freddie's ashes were buried in Garden Lodge, somebody else told me that his ashes were at his mom's , but I can't figure out who is right. I am from Mêxico & attended the concert in Puebla on the 17th October . However when I arrived in Puebla I was looking for the concert venue that very same day , unfortunately I got to the Estadio Cuauhtèmoc first instead of the Estadio Zaragoza since I got confused myself (I did not live in Puebla) , until I was told I was in the wrong place since no concert would be held there , they added that the concert venue (Estadio de Beisbol Ignacio Zaragoza) was just the opposite side of the city. When I got there I realised I was in the right place. The legend : "Estadio Olìmpico Ignacio Zaragoza " could be seen on top of the facade of the venue . NOBODY TOLD ME ANYTHING, I WAS THERE. The information printed on the ticket are right. I'm telling you this as a Mexican who was there. There has been a confusion about the correct information maybe due to the fact that books such as "QUEEN As it Began" (page 147 Hyperion New York 1992/Pan books IMP England 1993 same page) state that: *the first concert was on the 16th October at the CuahteRmoc Stadium in PueblO (instead of CuaUhtÈMoc & PueblA and the correct information is: *17th October at the IGNACIO ZARAGOZA Stadium in PueblA Eventually such misunderstanding was corrected at a certain level on the 2nd edition of the Greg Brooks' book: "Queen Live" which states thet the concerts were held : *on the 16th & 17th October at the Estadio Zaragoza in Puebla (page 179) and the correct information again is: *17th & 18th October at the Estadio Zaragoza in Puebla To sum up I can not get to know for sure the place were Freddie's ashes are placed since I can not be there to prove it. On the other side, I was actually on the 17th October at the Estadio Ignacio Zaragoza to see Queen, nobody told me about it. Again I was there : link link Furthermore the Cuauhtèmoc Stadium is a soccer venue (there is grass in there) , whereas the Zaragoza Stadium is a baseball venue (with both chippings & grass).Since this area was not properly covered or protected, the attendants were able to get such chippings to eventually throw them towards the stage (inside stockings, t-shirts etc.) . So if the concert would have been held at the Cuauhtèmoc Stadium , the attendants could not have got such chippings at all, only grass. Regards Francisco Arellano B. P.S. When my family & I got to Puebla, my father (who was driving the car) asked somebody in the street how to get to the Ignacio Zaragoza Stadium, and this person showed him the way , pointing out that he should be careful not to get confused & take the other way to the other Stadium in the city: The Cuauhtèmoc .Fortunately, we got to the correct venue, but it was already dark so we could not get a clear view of the facade of the Zaragoza Stadium (as shown in your pics), we just followed all the people walking in line towards it (& as a consequence there was much dust all around) & some background music was heard. All of us were quite excited and eager to see Queen live.It was like a dream come true (It still is for many of us) .So these pictures bring back good memories of that night. At least of what my family (my dad,my mom,an aunt & my sis)& I witnessed.Ta'. Wilki Amieva 29.01.2007 22:36 |
You're welcome! These are from the NEVERMORE GOODBYE TACOS bootleg CD. The Under Pressure soundcheck is very interesting. Freddie does his falsettos - as in the studio version. |
Ale Solan 29.01.2007 22:51 |
As far as I know, those always "were part" of the whole convo, I already had them too but in mp3 format. I've never arsed to get the loseless version since the quality is not the best - I'm talking about the old source of course - my old mp3 version is similar to the one featuring in Martin's site... link ... but it misses the Freddie mini interview and the Concert presentation is lost in one of the hundreds CDs with stuff I have. |
Ale Solan 29.01.2007 22:55 |
I remember that Nevermore Goodbye Tacos bootleg, no idea if my mp3 version comes from there and feck knows where else, haha. Very funny title, I'm thinking about do my own artwork and name it "Shoes, Tacos & Motherfuckers". |

Alex Solan? wrote: As far as I know, those always "were part" of the whole convoNope. As a matter of fact, the soundcheck, the concert and the radio intros all come originally from different sources. The other radio intros plus the short Freddie interview are from even another source! |
Ale Solan 30.01.2007 01:19 |
When I said part of the whole convo I tried to say that I got that version with all those extras included, except the ones I mentioned previously, I know the concert and the extras comes from different sources, dunno how many sources are involved, that's the problem. Well... I'm not losing sleep for finding out >.< |

Alex Solan? wrote: The announcer at the beggining of the show said that "...this place is set to host over 100,000 people..."I just listened to the recording and what I understand by that comment is more like "this lighting rig is planned/designed to be seen by over 100,000 people" and he told it so the people would move to the back and not crowd near the front. I don't think anybody did what he says, there's people making fun of him in the background (I would have done the same). His other words were "either way, you're all going to have a good view" and someone jokes saying "I am blind". Gotta love that humor. I can totally relate to that wit, haha :). Wiley |
