I was looking at MTV'S 22 Greatest voices of all time special...and they actually had MARIAH CAREY before FREDDIE MERCURY? I mean come on, just because you can hit high notes, it doesnt mean that you can sing, come on!!! I think Mariah Carey's voice is good, but after a while, her voice can get a little annoying...she always hitting those damn high notes! Granted, I hate her latest CD along with her greatest hits, but I wouldnt dare put her before Freddie! I swear, I never get tired of listening to Freddie's voice! Does anyone agree with me? Here goes the list: link Not that it means anything, We ALL know who should be #1!!! |

Mariah Carey Freddie Mercury Whitney Houston Bono Christina Aguilera Alanis Morissette Kurt Cobain Björk Céline Dion Tupac Shakur Michael Jackson Chris Cornell Eminem David Bowie Alicia Keys Steven Tyler Jewel Thom Yorke Mary J. Blige Michael Stipe Sade Bruce Springsteen Sorry, MTV, but this is ridiculous. Most of the listed are well-known artists who have new material in the charts. And some are kind of "legends" who are featured in each and every poll. What about those who are not active anymore, who proved 15 or 20 years ago, that they were great singers? Where are the non English speaking? Where, for god's sake, is Aretha Franklin?? And Eminem didn't even prove that he can sing yet ... |

They were looking at the most 'original or distinctive voice' rather than the most tunefull, although the worbling puffed up Mariah Canary, Ms Houston and Ms Dion are about the only ones on the list that can 'sing' in tune, sorry Fred but sometimes it was a bit ruff. There are many more singers that have better voices, just not so well known, Steve Perry of Journey, Nancy Wilson from Heart, two of my favs, tune, power original but to the average joe public Who the F???? are they. |

MTV's lists are about as valuable as the weekly "Favorite songs you'd want to hear live" thread that appears here. Mariah sells a lot of records right now... but might want to start mixing in a salad every now and then. |

I don't really see the fascination over Mariah Carey. You have to admit she is a good singer but those high notes do get annoying and she could never sing a Quen song like Freddie. |

Hah...Eminem is always on these lists, so that was the first person I looked for to dismiss this list as a joke. Sure enough, there he is. They don't even have Bryan Ferry from Roxy Music, so that kinda proves it's a list made of current celebs. When Mariah sings high it sounds like a joke...I thought she was on drugs the first time she did it, like an Anna Nicole moment, then everyone said how *good* it was?!? And she got booed at Live-Aid...I don't recall that happening to Freddie :) |

You mean Hoeriah or Hogriah. I'd put Robert Plant before her or even Roger Daltrey. Daltrey is way better than her. He can sing, croon and scream. When I saw The Who in 2002, Daltrey could still scream the high notes of LOVE on Love, Reign O'er Me. His voice is like a fine wine. Hoeriah can't sing, her voice is now all airy. |

LadyMoonshineDown 27.02.2006 20:45 |
The fact that it's the "top 22" gives an inclination that it's a stupid poll. With so many voices NOT listed, how can one with half a brain look at this and feel that 22 covers everyone in the music world? It's not like it's the only poll in the world either; it's no definite "this is how it's gonna be, damnit" poll to be set in stone. Ask any musician, and they'll tell you that Mercury had an amazing voice; classically trained, too. Don't get upset over this, for their are many polls of "greatest singers", and believe me, in more than half of them, Fred is at the top. It's nothing to get too huffy about. Cheers |

But it's not a strong voice, and singing like that for a long time results in vocal strain in later years; a.k.a. a shittier voice than previously acknowledged. Take it from me; Breathy=bad. Cheers |

Why does everyone HATE Britney Spears....? What has she done personally to us other than hurt our ears :) lol But seriously, I cant hate on Britney, she's doing her thing, hell, if I couldnt sing, but could still sell some records, I'd do it with the quickness too! Dont you guys understand? This is sad but its the truth: Image sells before the music does, the quailty of music doesnt matter...I'm telling you...actually the quailty does matter to a certain extent, but the image is what really counts, and if the artist/band is marketable! Vocals are seriously the least of the mattter, as long as you can carry some sort of note. I know a lot of singers who sound great, but they've only had minor hits. Sex sells also...but artist nowadays overdue it (Britney and Maddonna's kiss at the VMA's!!) Hell, even Queen had a song out called "Fat Bottomed girls." But they didnt overdue it, which is refreshing, but then again, I havent listened to all of Queen's records, just clips over the internet. If you aint talking about shaking that ass, you aint gonna sell no records (being sarcastic!) Being seriously, when it comes down to it, sex sells! |

onelonelypussycat wrote: Why does everyone HATE Britney Spears....? If you aint talking about shaking that ass, you aint gonna sell no records (being sarcastic!) Being seriously, when it comes down to it, sex sells!I despise the wench B*tchney(I refuse to call her by real name). She is a liar(lied about everything from smoking, drugs, tattoos, etc), a hypocrite, homewrecker and also from all accounts a rude, selfish tramp. I had customers from old record store I used to work at tell me, and it wasn't bullsh*t, and say I met her and I replied is she what the media portrays her(nice) or is she supertramp(excuse the pun). Turns out she was the latter(always refusing autographs, tells fans to f*ck off and even told Yankee player Derek Jeter to take a hike and that is no lie). We had one Madonna already we don't need TWO! At least she is wearing out her welcome as album sales have PLUMMETED(don't blame the internet and economy) due to overexposure of her in press and so forth. Any artist who sells 14 or so million in the US alone on a debut album has their clock ticking soon after before they fall from grace. Many a bands got to success based on MUSIC and not their appearance(Pink Floyd, Rush, Supertramp, Genesis, The Eagles, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin) |

If I ever saw a celeb, I would probably look, thats it...I aint running to get their autograph like their God or something... I heard that Janet Jackson was a bitch to boot also, which is pretty tough to believe. This guy that works at this hotel downtown in Milwaukee said that she was a bitch, and that she didnt want anyone to even look at her, or even be on the same elevator as her!!! She probably shes simply tired of people going to her asking for autographs and pictures, so in a way, I dont blame her. So, I wouldnt call her a bitch, hell, she probably just wants to be normal like everyone else!! LOL... |

Now that would be someone to meet!!I have met quite a few rock stars, all of whom were nice to me(be it in person or webchat or on the phone). I met Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Singer and Bruce Kulick of KISS in July of 1993(shook their hands and got John Hancocks) at a premiere of their video KISS Konfidential/Alive III publicity tour in Boston. I also got a reply from David Gilmour of Pink Floyd on a webchat in January of 2002 after I asked him what got him involved in the Nordoff-Robbins Therapy which helps autistic children and adults through music and he is extremely kind(this is the same man who gave $12 million to the homeless between 2002 and 2003). I have talked to Rick Davies and John Helliwell of Supertramp on the phone on Rockline(they were extremely polite and cool). Nick Mason of Pink Floyd I talked to on Rockline as well in April of 1995 and he is kind and funny as well. I even met Rob Halford, KK Downing and Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest in June of 2005 when I talked to them on the phone and were down to Earth and cool plus funny. |

I agree with you, B*tchney as I call Britney, got turned down by EVERY label but some bro at Jive which was a predominantly black R&B/rap label probably offered her a deal after he had intercourse with her. Luckily her career is falling down the toilet as her erratic behavior, which made Syd Barrett's seem normal in comparison, is killing her. She only made it cos people liked how she looked, she is a trashy facsimile of one of my best friends!NOTWMEDDLE wrote:I know. It's embarrasing to think that she somehow made it as a singer. No wonder she lip synched in concert and complained about being out of breath on stage.NOTWMEDDLE wrote:What makes Linda Ronstadt so much better than these pop diva hoo haw's is that she has such great vocal control, stability, and range. She isn't following up each word she sings with a breath; breathy singing isn't good singing. What sealed the deal with me respecting her voice was when she did standards. People don't realize just how hard it is to sing them; back in the day, singers HAD to be good, because the songs required talent. Now, ANYONE can sing, and make millions. I'd like to see Britney Spears attempt to sing a standard. Not only would she butcher it, but she'd die of vocal strain. Cheersmagicalfreddiemercury wrote:Linda Ronstadt absolutely is great too. She can sing the pants off anyone. She sang rock, country, New Wave, hard rock, pop, jazz, standards, R&B, maharichi. Hell, she has sang every musical genre I can think of. Kate Bush is too weird, I'll take Chrissie Hynde anyday. I forgot to mention Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins as great singers. Babsi Streisand is annoying but has a diverse voice(may be known for schlock but had two albums produced by Barry Gibb and did a duet with disco diva Donna Summer, had one song written or produced for her by Meatloaf mastermind Jim Steinman and even had Roger Daltrey appear in her video for Emotion where he played her love interest who sleeps in most of clip until she awakens him as she is being chased by muggers). |
