Apologies if this has been covered before(I had a quick check but I can't see it). Last month there was all the stuff about people remembering where they were when they heard about John Lennons' assasination(which I heard about in my school assembley). To those of you old enough to have memories of that day, where were you when you heard about Freddies' death? I was living in a shared house at the time in Newcastle. I had finished university the summer before and had stayed on to work on a research project for my department. The night before we had had a bit of a party so I was a bit slow getting up that day. At what must have been about 8am two of my housemates who knew I was a big Queen fan knocked on my door to tell me the news. I was still in bed, thinking that I really should get up. At first I didn't believe it, I was in shock. I immediately turned on the radio and TV and there it was. I remember Queen was playing constantly on the radio. It was constant Queen. Having grown up with Queen and having been such a huge fan for so many years it had a really big effect on me. |

I was in bed. It came on the ITV news at around 10:30pm. "Rock Star Freddie Mercury has died of AIDS". Then my folks came running up to me to see if I was ok! |

I had been hearing and reading reports during the week of his death that he had been sick and might possibly have contracted AIDS. Then the night before his death there was a brief tv news report stating that he had indeed been inflicted with the disease. I still have it on video tape but it lasts about 10 seconds. The next day the papers reported that he had passed on. Talk about a bummer! |

...on my way to school... I did not believe the guy who told me. As a matter of fact, he had been bitching to me about Freddie having AIDS for months so I was already pissed off with him. This felt like the final drop. So I kicked his ass! ;-))) Only to find out he was telling the truth when I arrived at school and everybody came up to me to give their condolences... Sad day... I indeed remember every single detail like it was yesterday... |

Sitting in a rocking chair, feeding my baby and watching the news. I didn't cry or anything but I was so shocked and upset. Being from America, and also having 3 small kids by then, I did not know of his health issues. :( |

I was about 11 at the time, and I didn't hear about his announcement that he had AIDS, but I remember hearing on the 25th that he died. I kind of sat in collective shock for about an hour, knowing that the lead singer from one of my favorite bands had died. I was already a fan for about two years by that point, but not nearly as much as I have been in the years following. By the way, the point of Freddie pissing himself, apparently this DID happen according to Freestone and Hutton, who both document it... |

Driving home from a few weeks of military duty, having no idea he was even sick, I tuned into a radio station playing several Queen songs in a row. Quite unusual. The dj then said "in Memory" of and I almost drove off the road. When I heard the aids thing a few seconds later I got quite pissed off at the waste of lives this disease has caused. I had a long trip so I bought a few used Queen cd's and played them all the way home. |

I would have just been waking up, reading sesame street books. Although it actually happened at around 7ish at night, for me it would have been about 7ish in the morning. I do have a friend, and just after they were born the midwife came in and told her mum that Freddie Mercury had died an hour ago. |

My mother came running up the stairs, she was uspet and crying and said she had something terrible to tell me. I was so dumbfounded I don't believe I said anything for the next five minutes, I was one of the fans who had chosen to ignore the grim articles in the tabloids. If I had seen but one of the pictures of his last months I would have believed it all, no doubt. |

I Got up to go to work, my brother telephoned me to put on the morning news on the TV. Talk about being gutted, I was already upset from the day before about Freddies press statement about having AIDS. Didn't go to work, phoned in sick. Moped about all week. The only bit of release I had that day was I went to my local HMV store & bought Brian's "Driven by You" single as it was released on the same day.I didn't even care if I was seen by my boss, as I was supposed to be sick, when I went out to buy the single. |

it was a very strange thing for me i was 11 and i didnt listen to queen at that moment, but when i heard that freddie was ill, i felt strange, i didnt know him and i almost didnt heard queen until that time and when i heard "freddie mercury died aged 45 because of AIDS" i couldnt believe it i thought "if i dont listen to queen music, and if i dont know freddie, so why do i care?" months later, i bought greatest hits 2, and i started to listen to queen if freddie were alive today, and he would die nowadays, i think that new would kill me, because i admire him and i dont know what would happened if freddie wouldnt die...because often i ask to myself if i would started to listen to queen music, if freddie wouldnt die i think yes, i would listening to queen anyway |

My wife came and got me when the newscast stated that he had AIDS. She knew I'd be distraught. His death, OTOH, didn't register with me when it happened. I was just imagining in horror how the most perfect voice I'd heard would probably be silenced by pneumonia. Some guy at work told me he was already dead sometime later. |

I was sitting in Frank Hessy's guitar shop in liverpool with a mate playing beatles songs and goofing off with some Japanese tourists on the saturday when someone said Freddie had announced he had aids. Although we had long suspected it,it was still a shock and we all hung around the radio until we heard it on the news. Went out and got incredibly drunk to try and obliterate the thoughts that came alongside. I'd already seen someone in work die of Aids and it wasn't pleasant. I was travelling back to London on the Sunday Night and heard about his death on the radio. Whether it was the effects of the previous nights drinking or just the shock I went and threw up. All I remember of the monday is continuous Queen music on the radio and going up to Logan PLace with flowers to stand like an idiot. Neil |

When John was shot i was four year old being looked after by Grandma I remember it to this day - my Kennedy in effect. As for Freddie I was off school as a 15 year old with a heavy cold. Unlike John's assination which was out of the blue, Freddie's passing in way had been expected for some time & was more of a relief at the time( no more suffering etc). For the past few months the good old English tabloids had hounded Freddie taking photos. It was only after the finality of his death his final 2 years all made sense. The non-touring of The Miracle, the Brit Award appearence in 1990 & the constant denial by the Queen camp that he wasnt ill |
