Tropical Storm Rita has strengthened into a Category One hurricane as it heads towards the US island chain known as the Florida Keys. Tens of thousands of residents have been ordered to leave the area. There are fears that Rita could hit Louisiana, which is still recovering from deadly Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has suspended plans for residents to return to the city because of fears the flood defences would fail if hit by a storm. are there some members living near Louisiana or New Orleans? Rita is coming. Gad, I've not heard those words for over 12 years since that long forgotten rainy night behind the gasworks. Lord, she was a size. Took her back to my place for round 2 afterwards. Well, I watched the 10:00pm news and they talked about that Rita could be FAR worse to the gas situation as a THIRD of the USA's oil wells and refineries are IN Texas. I live about half mile from the gas station, so I figured that ''mass hysteria'', especially with the NEWS IDIOTICALLY blasting panic and fear and making matters worse, would cause people to go nuts today. So...I ran up the street last night and filled up while gas was still cheap (it's come DOWN about 60 cents in the last week), and while there was STILL gas to be had, and no lines. Sure enought this mornig, I passed the station and gas had jumped 10 cents since 10pm last night (and it was 8am this morning), and there was a humongeous line of panic stricken people at the station. You know...I do want to know the news...but the WAY they GO OFF and instill panic and hype it up only creates panic in people. I was fine until I saw the news. When I saw them going off about ''shortages, panic, yada'', I said screw you...you are CREATING panic, so I better go and get my gas now before everyone goes balistic in the morning. |

I lived in Florida from 1990-1991. We had several minor hurricanes and still kept getting evacuated and I lived about 5 miles in land from Fort Lauderdale beach. Just a few months after I moved BACK to Maryland, Hurricane Andrew hit and my Mom was still living there at the time, and it ws almost as bad as Katrina. She was evacuated for over a week and placed in a school fallout shelter. There was looting, flooding, the air force bas edown there where I saw an Allman Brothers Band concert, had to evacuate...and the news showed military planes and tanks, thrown around and obliterated like matchsticks. The phone lines were down for over a week, I couldn't reach my mom, I thought she was dead. When she returned home and the phone lines were back up, she had no electricity OR RUNNING WATER for about 3 weeks, the grocery stores were obliterated so she had to stand in RED CROSS lines for food and water rationing. Man....I have NEVER been sorry I moved back. I LOVE the beach and I loved living in Ft. Lauderdale...until THAT. No freaking way will I ever move near the beach, not ven here in Ocean City, Maryland which is STILL recovering from Hurricane Isabel from 2003. |

I figured since I've lived through one hurricane (Hugo in '89), odds are that I'd never have to be in another..but who knows.. We had no running water or electricity for over a week. I thought that sucked, but at least we had a house! In SC, it seems like every year we have our close calls, but everything seems to either turn off into the Atlantic or hit the outer banks of NC. Evacuating is a bitch, as well. I was at the beach a few years ago with Pieter, and we got stuck in one. Took us an hour and a half to get 15 miles down the road. Think I'll stay inland. About the gas though, I do hope there isn't a panic. It doesn't help matters when nimrods take every container they own and fill them up with gas. |

Erin, I am showing my age, but next to Isabel, probably as bad or worse, was Hurricane Agnes in the 1970's when I was a pre-teen. I live oh about 200 miles from the ocean, in Baltimore Couty, and damn near all of Maryland was under as much flood water as New Orleans now is. My Mom's house (then) was built way back in 1959 and was built WAY up on a very high hill, next to a forest that was never developed, we also had tons of super tall trees and shrubbery (my point being back then, neighborhoods were not OVER developed, so the trees and soil helped absorb the rains... ...and STILL we were very lucky we were not flooded, as the neighborhood shopping center, not 1 mile away, was on the news and under about 20 FEET of water. Alot of little country like towns within 2-5 miles of us took decades to recover...like Ellicott City and some...were NEVER, EVER rebuilt and the people NEVER came back, like the town of Daniels. Any Marylanders out there know what I am talking about. Then my mother's asshole boyfriend...spread PANIC with an unconfirmed rumor that he heard the Liberty Damn resovoir had a crack in it, which would have flooded all of Baltimore County like New Orleans when the levies broke. But it was an INCORRECT rumor, F**KING nimrod. We had no electricity for about a week. It just rained and rained, sheets so hard you couldn't see through whipped by the wind for like a week. Terrifying experience I will never forget. |
