The more people who sign this the better!
Don't be childish with such a serious issue. What kind of example is adding a 3 to your screen name, that's ridiculous. You won't help a single hungry child with that or with wearing a band.
You can help if you want. But helping means sharing and not making some empty gesture. You can buy Fair Trade products, you can donate money to various hunger relief agencies. You can urge your government to work for fair trade rules rather than to protect the profit of the European (and American) companies in Africa.
You can sponsor a child through Worldvision with only 35 USD per month. With 35 USD you can provide for food, health care and education of a child in Africa (or another pover stricken country). It's only one child you save but it's one starving child less and you actually make a difference. Wearing some bands, watching a concert on TV or adding a number to your screen name is useless and won't make the slightest difference.
The day I got my first job when I was a teenager, I signed up to sponsor a child. He was from Taiwan, and his name was Chang Chia Jen. I was 18, and he was an awesome kid, and it was fun learning about another culture, and knowing that I was helping another human being. My next sponsored child was a girl, Manjula, from India. She and I forged a great relationship, truly becoming friends. I sponsored her until she married, and our relationship truly affected my life. Now another little boy from India has come into my life, Mahesh. He has some health problems, a palsy which causes him to shake, and he cannot write well, but I do exchange letters with his mother, and she updates me on his progress, and he is a happy little fellow. I highly recommend sponsoring a child. Not only are you making a difference in someone's life, but it is truly a rewarding and enriching experience.
YourValentine, in a way you're right, we are not helping starving people in Africa by putting a 3 in front of our name and wearing a white band but we are showing we care. That 3 is nothing more than a mark of respect, and the bands, although not ending poverty are helping, even if it's only a small bit. I, for one, respect Paul, because he is doing more than, as you said, buying fair trade products. He has raised lots of money for this very worthy cause and for doing so, and doing this, I respect him, a lot. He, even if it is small, is making a difference or at least helping to make a difference. Not all of us can sponser a child, or buy Fair Trade products, some of us already do and want to do more, this may not be directly affecting the poor people in Africa but it is showing we care.
