1 Keep Yourself Alive - 10/10 2 Doing Alright - 9.5 3 Great King Rat - 8.5 4 My Fairy King - 8.0 5 Liar - 8.5 6 the Night Comes Down - 9.5 7 Moder Times' Rock and Roll - 7.5 8 Son and Daughter - 7.5 9 Jesus - 6.5 10 Seven seas of Rhye - 9.0 84.5/100 Pretty good debut album IMO. You can tell they are still trying to find themselves as a band. Three really great songs in Keep Yourself Alive, Doing Alright, and The Night Comes Down. Unfortunately, the album ends rather weakly. Modern Times' Rock and Roll and Son and Daughter are painfully average and Jesus barely passes as a decent Queen song. Having the Seven seas of Rhye teaser and the ends somwhat redeems it though. |

We're doing this over in Serious Discussion. |

This thread is cold and calculating and probably does not fit in with the serious diccussion. I have a mild interest in this thread as well as the serious one, but I do not think this thread will have staying power. That said,I will rate the songs anyway: 1 Keep Yourself Alive - 8/10 2 Doing Alright - 5 3 Great King Rat - 8 4 My Fairy King - 1 5 Liar - 9 6 the Night Comes Down - 9 7 Moder Times' Rock and Roll - 3 8 Son and Daughter - 3 9 Jesus - 3 10 Seven seas of Rhye - 3 I grade on an absolute scale of 1 being the worst Queen song and 10 being the best. I helped do a Queenzone song poll several years - thresult are in a link in my signature. |

I don't know about reasons - or even if this thread should be replied to, but something i did notice when i was in hospital - and away from the board for about one week: when i returned to the zone, i had literally pages of unread threads to trawl through. most were inane drivel, and could be skipped over, but time and again, the same threads kept re-appearing. for eaxmple - how many topics were started at the conclusion of the jackson trial - when infact one would have been suffice? i have enjoyed reading "lester's" thread. it has been easy to find, and unlike the jackson story, because it is all in the one place it is very handy and convenient, and above all can be easily accessed at a later date. now, because NJQueenFan has hi-jacked that idea, i have to jump between pages to find corresponding ideas - and that is just plain silly, and inconvenient. it not only clogs up the board for no apparent reason, we also invariably start some cross-fertilisation between pages which becomes hard to follow, or read in any chronological sequence. I am against moderation, but i suggest we could have a few "genre mods", that is they do not have the power to censor, but they do have the power to remove mail to the correct forum or thread, and i suggest this whole thread be removed to lester's discussion page. finally, i also suggest that lester gives people time to think, write and contribute to his threads. therefore, each album should be up for discussion for about one week - before he moves onto the next in sequence. (ie Queen II). If after 12 weeks or so - i wish to return to Queen II, (or if i was a newbie) it would be simple to return to the correct thread, rather than one of a dozen or so identical topics. I also think it would be shitty therefore to hijack Lester's ideas - and we start to see Queen II/ sheer heart attack threads etc, before he decides to take his own forwards. Newbies who do not use the search button, could be accomodated, by having inncorect threads moved to the proper page. I have no axe to grind here. i do not wish to upset anyone. but i love this place, and i am 100% behind any idea which will make QZ a better place for all, and i do think lester's idea raises the tone of the place above the "was freddie the postman or the letterbox" mentality. And as such i would like to watch his baby grow, rather than have it hijacked at birth by someone either too lazy to come up with an original idea - or use a search button to post in the correct forum. |

lester: having been over to the serious forum - i notice the title of your thread is: Album Discussion Thread for 6/19/05 - "Queen" Can i suggest - in an effort to watch your baby grow - and so that regular zoners can support you, you change this title to: Lester's Album Discussion Thread - "Queen" That way it means that i can not only support you at a glance, but i can ignore the cheap immitators, and, at a later date, (by using the search button) find back-dated threads so much easier. |
YourValentine 20.06.2005 09:16 |
In fact we do already move around topics, mostly from the serious to the general forum. I don't think it's possible or even desirable to move topics into other topics. This thread is a sheer rate-the-songs type topic and perfectly okay for the general forum. Many people enjoy rating songs/albums/band members/hair styles/most appropriate burial tune or whatever else. They can do it here in the General Forum. You can discuss song history, lyrics, harmonies or any other interesting topic related to the "Queen" album in Lester's thread and conveniently ignore this thread. It's true that many users don't bother to read what other people have to say and therefore you have a huge amount of useless and redundant topics and even answers within a topic but it's only a message board and not an academic debating club. Let's have a little fun and allow everybody to enjoy themselves here the way they want. Now let's go over to the serious board:) Sorry for hijacking this thread:) |

Its probably the best track on the album (and a clear hint towards March of The Black Queen on Queen II and BoRap on ANATO), followed by Doing Allright and Liar. In comparison, Keep Yourself Alive is really nothing special (but still a good song). |

YourValentine: "This thread is a sheer rate-the-songs type topic and perfectly okay for the general forum... Let's have a little fun and allow everybody to enjoy themselves here the way they want." Yes, you are correct - and oddly enough I agree with that too. Considering that Lester has also helped out by kindly re-titling his threads - it means that we now have some identification between topics of similar types of discussion. That should give zoners the greater choice of contibuting to either a serious or a more light-hearted variation - and opens the door to further contributions. Sorry for beng so tight-ars*d, but i can see that room exists for all variations - on all forums - but by the same token I was only trying to avoid a repeat of last weeks deluge, whereby about half a dozen threads all opened with the same topic. Nevertheless, Queenzone is still the best place to be! |

but this thread needs retitling - it's anything BUT a REVIEW - marks out of 10 do not constitute reviewing in any event |

Keep yourself alive 7,5/10 Doing Allright 6,5/10 Great King Rat 7,5/10 My Fairy King 7,5/10 Liar 7/10 The Night comes Down 6/10 Modern Times Rock n Roll 7,5/10 Son and Daughter 8/10 Jesus 6,5/10 Seven Seas of Rhye 3/10 A very good hard-rocking album, highly recomended to all fans of their 70's work. The production is weak however and would definitely benefit from a proper remaster. Not many chart hits on this album but even the casual fan will find many great songs. |

Keep Yourself Alive-7 Doing all right-8 Great King Rat-5 My Fairy King-7 Liar-8 The Night comes down-8 Modern times rock n roll-7 Jesus-5 Son and Daughter-5 Seven Seas of Rhye-9 I think its a good album as it has a good variety of songs, dynamic lyrics and a great beginning and end. An excellent debut. |

Keep Yourself Alive-10/10 great way to catch somebody's attention at the beginning of the album Doing All Right-7/10 a little too slow, but still good Great King Rat-8/10 i love the song, but it's too repetitive My Fairy King-9/10 really weird, and wonderful Liar-5/10 a little too long, and i cant quite see what everyone loves about this one The Night Comes Down-10/10 i dont know how to describe this one, just magnificently mind-blowing Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll-3/10 i cant say i like rogers voice much Son And Daughter-6/10 they tried to go a little too far beyond hard rock, and it turned out bad Jesus-9/10 shows freddies best vocals on the entire album, and, though i dont like the story of the song, its a really good song Seven Seas Of Rhye-4/10 so short its worthless, they shouldve just kept the one on queen ii and left this one off Overall: 7/10 not bad for a debut album |

Personally, I will visit both threads. This thread does serve a purpose that is beneficial to Lester's thread: It keeps numerical ratings out of a serious discussion thread. |
