Anyone got this yet?
It's brilliant - not a bad track on either cd (or either "side", if you like)!
The best album of year so far...and Coldplay's X&Y was a very good effort too.
I've got it. Can't give my final verdict, yet. Even with the 2 CD's though, I don't think it's their greatest album ever, like Dave Grohl has said. The Colour and the Shape will ALWAYS be their best.
One song that stands out is the one Taylor sings on the second CD..Cold Day in the Sun, I think,...really good song.
I agree....Taylor does "Cold Day In The Sun" very well...
I don't think it's quite up to The Colour & The Shape (or One By One), but it's not far behind!
The second, 'quiet' disc is exceptional, IMO. There are some really beautiful melodies on there, and also a broad palette of styles and textures (from country to jazz to soft rock and everything in between). It also has some of Dave's best lyrics and vocal performances too, especially on 'Friend of a friend'.
The first, 'rock' disc is a belter too. At the very least, I'm glad it is more than the non-stop wall of thrashing about noises that some reviews had led me to expect. the Foo's knack for pacing strong, catchy melodies pull this one through. All in all, really good (and noisy) power pop.
Packaging is ace too - I like the paper thy have used for the deluxe version. Still haven't played the DVD yet. I need to 'borrow' someones 5.1 surround sound set set up to listen to the new mix of disc two that is included.
Personally, I've always had a soft spot for their first, eponymous album (even though it is really a Dave Grohl solo album). Lots of nice grungy pop-rock on there (but importantly, much of the willful obscureness and bleakness of that genre was stripped away, meaning that i could actually bear to listen to it, unlike Nirvana). 'The Colour And The Shape' has some very strong songs on it ('Monkey Wrnech', 'Everlong' etc), but its proto emo styling and lyrics grated after a while.
'There is Nothing Left to Lose' was pleasant enough, though I never reallygot into it. 'One By One' had the best Foo's songs to date ('All My Life', 'Have It All') and also their most tedious (including 'Tired of You'. Even Brian's guitar orchestra couldn't save it).
