I was just looking at amazon.com and Hot Space is the second highest ranked studio album from the band. The first is A Night At The Opera, and the rest are greatest hits collections, but I never would've thought Hot Space would be more popular than albums like News Of The World or The Game! link |
Lester Burnham 03.03.2005 22:13 |
Erm, maybe it's my eyesight going because I don't have my glasses on, but 'Hot Space' received only 3 1/2 stars, while the albums you mentioned - News Of The World and The Game - got 4 1/2 stars. |

I'm just surprised since I'd expect any other album to sell better! |

I think the album cover attracts peoples attention. :) |

Am I going to tell you that I think Hot Space is better than ANATO or The Game?? Nah, I won't do that. However....I don't think Hot Space is that bad, in fact, I think its quite an ambitious effort. Upon first listen, its missing the sounds I love in Queen...you know...that Don't Stop Me now, Save Me, Spread Your Wings, Somebody to Love, March Of The Black Queen....sound...that is just....QUEEN! BUT...you know, this bad did something completly backwards then how they normally complete an album. Queen usually took a sound that was already out, and perfected it.....I read that somewhere in fact: "Queen didn't invent music, they perfected it". Hot Space wasn't like that....after realizing a huge hit with the funk/disco/rock/pop -like "Another One Bites The Dust"... Queen assumed that if they won a whole new audience with this one song (Queen gained a ton of black/ethnic fans with "Dust") .....the band assumed ... "A whole album of tracks like this is a sure hit". Well, some fans weren't so hot on "Hot Space". But you know who REALLY likes "Hot Space"?? People who really aren't that framiliar with Queen. I mean..think about it... if you didn't start liking Queen because of BoRhap, Father To Son, Liar, We are the Champions....and Hot Space is a "new" album with band you are just vaguely framiliar with...then its really a neat poppy funk/r&b/disco album with some real gems. The album was a risk.... instead of perfecting what was out, it was the one time the boys really went against the grain. Not everyone loved it.... but in the 1980's, a then well respected, king of pop, Michael Jackson said "Queen's Hot Space is one of the best albums ever made, I listened to that album 10 times a day while writing and creating Thriller". I really don't think "Hot Space" is that bad....it sounds soooo 1980's everyone says, but so does Frankie Go's to Hollywood,Simple Minds, The Fixx, etc... Its like its ok that all of the one hit wonder from the 1980's sound like 1980's, but many Queen fans complain of the "80's" sound of a Queen album recorded around, oh, say...1981?? |

I actually love Hot Space. I think it's a fun album, and while Body Language is kind of high on the cheese factor, it's still a good listen. I'm just surprised because I'd expect The Game or News Of The World to be second to A Night At The Opera. It's interesting to see people picking up Hot Space when they're first getting into the band because when I started listening to them, everything I heard about Hot Space was negative! |
Scott_Mercury 04.03.2005 00:25 |
Gunpowder- All real Queen fans own the "Live at Milton Keyes" dvd now... After hearing Staying Power and Action this day at MK, people are giving Hot Space another listen. I have talked to about 7-10 hardcore Queen fans that dusted off the Hot Space after not listening to it for 5 to 10 years....all because of the live versions of Backchat, Staying and Action at MK. |

Freddie-B 04.03.2005 05:59 |
It doesn't make any sense!! Hot Space is rubbish!! I don't know about anyone else but I've got very little time for it. Having said that, I don't have a right lot of time for any of the 80s albums, maybe the Works but that's about it. Still though, any album with Calling All Girls, Back Chat, Put Out The Fire, and Action This Day can't be worth the paper it's printed on! |
Vdo28 04.03.2005 07:21 |
Well I really think Hot Space is great. It's Queen discovering funk. I wouldn't mind if there was a Hot Space II. I know that would be impossible. I really like staying power live. |
Leppar 04.03.2005 08:46 |
I like Hot Space. It gives Queen an even wider variation of styles which stops the boredom of continually producing the same type of songs. Body Language was crap and so was Cool Cat, but i loved Action This Day and Calling All Girls. Bands should be applauded for taking risks and trying to make something new. But this wasn't the best Queen album, about 6th i'd say. |
Jimmy Dean 04.03.2005 12:04 |
Scott_Mercury.... very insightful and thoughtful post... i think you nailed the essence of the album ;) |

sorry I'm in the Hot Space is a so so album camp .I remember when I bought it back in 1982, I thought hmmmmmmmm I don't know if I am going to like this. I mean it's o.k. , i just could / can never get into the dance tracks . sorry Hot Space fans . [ put out the fire and under pressure are great though ] |

Scott, I've been a Queen fan since 1992, and in the space of 13 years, I've become very familiar with Queen. And it just so happens, I love Hot Space. Funk/disco/dance was very big in '82. As Queen had always done, they tried to incorporate the modern styles of music in their records. This album wasn't very successful at the time, but it doesn't mean it's a dreadful album. |
Scott_Mercury 04.03.2005 20:50 |
Which Scott are you talking to?? I like Hot Space. |

I don't think Hot Space is one of Queen's top albums, but it's still pretty good. I like Body Language too, so I'm glad other fans are sticking up for it! |
ANAGRAMER 05.03.2005 16:31 |
I was 18 when this was released - huge disappointment then and hasn't grown on me since Queen overstretched (esp Roger and Brian)technically and songwritingly I have a string feeling they were trying to capitalise on AOBTD to catastrophic effect, especially in USA where, I'm sure, the album was directed A disaster on all counts!! |
vanush 05.03.2005 18:12 |
Michael Jackson wouldnt of made "Thriller" if it wasnt for Hot Space |

Personally I'll always be defending the artistic strength that's in the album Hot Space. It's not my favorite Queen album, but I never thought it was bad and I think it's not right to go out and say this album was a failure. The "easy way" to get an opinion about that album is to say: "this album is the weakest of Queen because it's their most different album" - too many people fell in that way of thinking and it's not right because it is a closed-minded way of thinking. Queen were a very eclectic band who always wanted to try different things - that's why they wanted to release Hot Space... and that's it ! In my case, I didn't need to listen to this album 10 000 times to understand that ok, it's VERY different, and it's experimental, but it is still good artistically. Songs like Staying Power, Dancer, Back Chat, Calling all girls are very different of what we were used to from the band, and maybe Hot Space is the album that represents the less Queen musical style, but to me that doesn't mean the songs on Hot Space are bad. Personally they make me in a good mood, like all the songs from the other albums... I think you have to stand back when you listen to Hot Space. You have to stop comparing it to other Queen albums, and you absolutely have to forget all the negative comments you've heard about this album... (cause there's too many people out there pretending this album is bad just because others said it before them...) You also have to stop believing that Queen were betraying their musical style with Hot Space, cause it's not true. Hot Space is an EXPERIMENTATION where Queen just wanted to explore new sounds, new moods... honestly, is there anything bad about that? Personally I say hats off to a band who dares experimenting new things and always being open-minded about their music... I think people should once for all forget about their negative, closed-minded thoughts about Hot Space and just LISTEN to it, without judging it by its difference... I can understand that some people can't get used to that funky-dance-disco music style - that's fine. But it might be good that those persons could still have an open-minded view about the album and still find some good things in it, cause there are. |

We perhaps use "crap" to describe their music more than we use words like "great", "beautiful" or similar. Strange breed of fans are we... :) |

I love Hot Space- that's a good album with solid songs. I wouldn't say I love it because I'm "not familiar" with Queen. I think people who are small-minded and look at music in genres and types- the sort of people who could say something like, "i only like rock", or "i like everything except rap" are limited and don't 'get' this album. You've got to just accept it and not have expectations, because Dancer, Action, Calling All Girls, etc. are *good* songs--- are they the *best* Queen songs? No. This is part of what makes Bowie so successful.. he has no loyalty to a genre or sound.. he does what he likes. I really doubt that Queen thought they had a new grasp of fans because of the success of 'Another One Bites The Dust', as if they were that limited and played to the crowd. I think they had general enthusiasm for doing something new, well, Freddie and John had the most enthusiasm. Going into something expecting something familiar.. the harmonys, the wall of guitar, the hard rock aspect, the ogre battles, etc... I just think most Queen fans want the same thing. I'm not saying I'm right- and I wouldn't have even responded to this, but this is an album that has long suffered from undeserved scorn because Queen was trying some new sounds- and when I read lots of nonsense regarding the people who enjoy this record are the people who don't *get* Queen, I'm moved to write. |

mike hunt 07.03.2005 14:35 |
the 'drown' guy is on right on target with the way i think, hot space is on the bottom of my list for queen albums but i will never again bash hot space, lots of good songs, life is real, put out the fire, words of love, under pressure, back chat, staying power (especially live) are all solid tracks. cool cat i admit i wouldn't like if it wasn't for freds voice, but since he sounds great i have to abmit i even like that track. when you talk about the people on this site being closed minded to music, i couldn't agree more. the age of the majority of the fans on this site are kids, that's why the words crap, and garbege are thrown around here. when i was 21 i was the same way, but i learned to have an open mind. it was my loss i was missing alot of good music and to all american fans who hate 80's queen, do yourself a favor and open your mind because it's your loss. |

To put it in the very own words of Triumph The Insult Comic Dog: HOT SPACE is absolutely THE BEST QUEEN ALBUM EVER... ...FOR ME TO POOP ON!! |

yea well hot space was a top ten hit, what did you ever do? oh yea besides spending all your life on a computer. if you knew so much about music why arn't you making music. your the typical music critic, you know nothing about music so you feel you have to shit on other people's, and by the way MR. Jingles, you look like nerd. |
hcrvelin 07.03.2005 16:49 |
Hot Space was so different from what Queen did until that moment or after. It started with Flash and then Hot Space. Rock base of Queen fans at that time was shaken and perhaps group as well after. But at least Queen did what they wanted and not what fans wanted (which sometimes is kind of selfish). I might have wierd taste, but I always thought of Miracle being an album which I would put last on the scale (while others would probably put HS instead). All this doesn't make HS top album any far, but to me it is not the worst one at least. |

It's still my less favorite but I have to admit it has grown on me a bit over the years. Did I forget to say anything else... Oh yeah, I know I'm a nerd so you don't need to tell me that. Now I know how Freddie felt when people asked if he was gay. One piece of advice to you, my friend is don't take everything deep to the heart or you'll spend your lifetime in deep sadness. |

A lazy album, with poor songs and production. I'm all for trying something new, but if you want something that's not typically queen but still works brilliantly, look to Fun It, or We Will Rock You, not Hot Space. The bottom line is the songs aren't good enough. |
