I recently bought this album and was surprisingly impressed with it. ive never heard much said about it except for the fact that it was the first queen album with synths. could anyone tell me who wrote what on the album because it doesnt say in the album booklet.
what do u guys think of the game?
Play The Game - Freddie
Dragon Attack - Brian
Another One Bites The Dust - John
Need Your Loving Tonight - John
Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Freddie
Rock It (Prime Jive) - Roger
Don't Try Suicide - Freddie
Sail Away Sweet Sister - Brian
Coming Soon - Roger
Save Me - Brian
Edit: I love The Game but there was a time when I over-indulged in it and hated it..then I over-indulged on Jazz and went back to The Game for comfort. Wicked album.
you can always tell whos songs r whos, i new johns other song without reading who wrote it. and u can definetly tell rogers,in my opinion the worst songwriter in queen. and brians and freddies are sort of the same because they do each others genres.
A good album "the game" loads of good singles on there but a big departure from the old stuff as synths were brought in and also mack co-produced the album and wanted to use a basic live feel to the album.
I can remember buying this album way back in 87 when i was about 13years old and thought it was great having heard anato as my first album and being very impressed with dragon attack.
Hard to believe the game is almost 25 YEARS OLD.
Roger, to me, writes about 'you'd better shape up or ship out'/general angst' type of songs. Sheer Heart Attack ('well you're just 17, all you wanna do is disappear), Fight From the Inside (You're just another picture on a teenage wall, you're just another sucker ready for a fall) and probably others I can't really think of/don't exist at the moment.
the game is a great album, one of their best. the synths were perpect at that particular time. i think the no synth label ran it's course and it was time for something new, and remember, the synth sound was 'rogers' idea. some would think 'john' or freddie would have wanted to change to pop, but it was roger. so many classics, 'play the game' was perfect, 'dragon attack' great, actually the only average song on the album is 'comming soon' was my least fav, but still decent.
I sometimes enjoy listening to The Game but I don't like synth sounds of it...
Especially NYLT is one of my favorites of the songs written by John and it seems John's songs always proved Freddie's other vocal skills.
Besides, also CLTCL, DA(chorus is effective) and Save Me are my favorites from that album.

Did you check inside or just the outside? Cos the inside booklet of my cd shows who wrote each of the songs.
In 1982 I got two albums for my birthday:
News Of The World and The Game.
They are still my fav. albums.
Often when I listen to the CD's I recall my recordplayer in my bedroom.
Didn't know much English (12 years old), but read the lyrics a few hundred times...
It's a good album, although I think it's very noticeable that the best songs on it are the ones that were recorded at the same time, i.e the ones on GHI, i.e. Play The Game, AOBTD, Save Me, and Crazy Little Thing. The others are ok, but display an all too obvious leaning towards the mediocrity of Hot Space for my liking. Except Sail Away Sweet Sister, that's brilliant.
I bought The Game the day it came out in the summer of 1980. This was a summer when you could turn on the radio and almost ALWAYS hear a song from that album. It was everywhere. Really big here in the States. To me this was the album that ended one era and began a new one. Primarily because of their use of synths. But it was still a great album to hear. What a great summer that was for the band... and me.
I liked the Game album best on the audio DVD version, to hear it on 5.1 it sounds much better.
I never liked "Rock it" much, but on 5.1 it takes on a new life on its own, and turned up loud - it really rips !! I hope they do more of these DTS Audios soon.
Great album! I couldn't stop listening to Need Your Loving Tonight for a long time. Then I became addicted to Rock It for a time. I don't think it's one of their best, but it is definately worth owning.
The Game was the first album I really fell in love with when I started liking Queen. I think it's the most accessible when you're starting to like them, whereas it takes bit of time to appreciate albums like Queen II.
i agree, 'the game' is a great place to start for a new fan. queen2 is my favorite of all time but i must admit it's a required taste. 'the game' is a bit more of a easy listen for a beginner. 'need your lovin' sounds like it should have been a hit, it's so catchy. 'prime jive' had to grow on me, but now i think it's great.
I like the album, not there best but very close. Has probally the most underated Queen song on it in "Need Your Loving Tonight". Is one of my favorite Queen songs and can't see why it never really became one of there big hits. The other highlight for me on the album is Freddie's intro to "Prime Jive". One of the only songs off a studio album to really showcase his amazing range and vocals................Peace
