I was listening to Osaka '76 in the bus and suddenly I realised that all tracks from the medley were written by Freddie. So I then tried to remember all medleys over the years and to my surprise the first time a Brian's composition appears in a medley is in 1984!!!! (Keep Yourself Alive) From my head: 1975 ITLOTG,KQ,MOTBK,BBTLB 1976 BR,KQ,MOTBK,BR,BBTLB 1977 KQ,GOFLB,TMW,YMBF 1978 DOTL,KQ,INLWMC,GOFLB,TMW,GDML,YMBF (not sure about the ordering) 1979 DOTL,KQ,BR,INLWMC,GDML,YMBF 1980,Mustapha,DOTL,KQ,INLWMC,GDML 1981 KQ,INLWMK,GDML (not sure now) 1982 (no medley) 1984 (At last!!!) STL,KQ,SSOR,KYA,Liar. 1986 (another BM) ITOTG,SSOR Liar, TIU, AKOM ... So, it looks pretty clear to me that Brian does not like medleys. |

Brian did a Queen medley on his Another World tour in 1998. Just because his tracks were never included in a medley doesn't mean he didn't like them. |

Prophet's Song and White Man were kinda joint, weren't they? mini-medley... Now I'm here and Dragon Attack- same... Well? |

Watch some interviews on DVDs and you'll see that it didn't matter to them who wrote songs which were performing during live shows. For many years only one Roger's song was performing - I'm In Love With My Car - but this doesn't mean that Brian, Fred and John hated Roger. |

They did a medley in Cape Town (46664) |

Thanks for your answers! I forgot the BM solo tours. I just wanted to ask for opinions about that predominance of Freddie tracks in the medleys that I just thought about for the first time today. Obviously, the subject title that I used was wrong, but I am still curious about what Brian can tell us about how the medley songs were picked up. Should I ask him??? :-) PS: Damn! The website is down! |

Personally, I think Brian had the most say in what medleys comprised of, because he's definitely the most musically-educated guy in the band, thus being able to make the best segues possible from song to song (you can't tell me Freddie wrote the thing between DO2L and KQ). Yes, they were each 25% of the band, but I think much of Brian's 25% was utilized for putting medleys together. Freddie was probably the key guy for setlists as a whole, as he had a great understanding of what people want. |

WHAT! Obviously, someone hasn't watched the On Fire DVD. Freddie was indeed a very competent pianist, as shown when he fools around before Play the Game in that particular concert. God know what you're talking about when you speak of a segue between Death on Two Legs and Killer Queen. Those two songs are on different albums. Perhaps you meant Death on Two Legs and Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon. Digging further into that, Freddie was the one who wrote all the vaudeville songs. Both compositions of Death on Two Legs and Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon are Freddie's compositions. Why wouldn't he write the interlude? The structure follows the patterns of so many other of his pieces. Besides, it you who says he able (able) to write the best segues, not that he does (does) write the best. |

The segue between Death On Two Legs and Killer Queen can be found at the end of DOTL from the Live Killers album, not on ANATO. |

Brian wasn't more educated in the musical aspect than Fred. He accepted it himself, compare the harmony of Tie Your Mother Down with Bicycle Race or Killer Queen. Or compare Prophet's Song (excellent track, but not entirely complicated) with Black Queen. In terms of arrangements they were just different, they were both equally strong imo. But as far as composition goes (keys, meters, forms) Fred was more advanced (which doesn't mean better, just... well, that, more advanced) The DOTL-KQ spacer isn't so "high-class", you don't need to be an orchestra conductor to write that. All four members in the band were capable enough to have suggested it. |

We're talking about live medleys. And yes, I've watched the On Fire DVD... Freddie just warms up with a few chords.. big deal. Freddie was a pretty good piano player, but certainly not one of the best ever. |

After listening to Dream Theater for a while, from a technical level, just about everyone else seems to pale in comparison. |

Adding to the original intent of the question (which was a nice observation and good question)...the medley segment was the 'play the hits' concept, and most likely Freddie not wanting to be tied down to the piano for such long spells. btw...our daughter borrowed a few Dream Theatre CDs. Having read about them so often here, and seeing them live with Queensryche two years back, we're looking forward to the listen. j+III |

Bit of randomness... You know how at the bottom of the screen there's this thing you click on to minimize the page or bring it back up again and it says the title of the page? Well for this thread it says "Brian doesn't like me..." I have quite a bad sense of humour and i found it quite amusing. |

I always liked the medley of piano- based songs- I was very disappointed when Fred started thinking he had to be near-permanently stood up to connect with an audience- it's sheer laziness in my view. Wembley in '86 was crying out for a medley of Play The Game, Death On Two Legs, Mustapha (not just the intro) and Somebody To love (if not the full version!). Instead we got Friends Will Be Friends and I Want To Break Free. Not acceptable. |
teleman 27.01.2006 14:16 |
Freddie did not like to do medleys. His preference was to do a pastiche. |
Rick 27.01.2006 15:02 |
I don't get it. There is no song of Brian in a medley (except during the Works-tour), but does that mean he doesn't like medleys? Doesn't make sense. |
bitesthedust 27.01.2006 17:01 |
1982: Now I'm Here/Dragon Attack/Now I'm Here reprise OR Now I'm Here/Put Out The Fire/Dragon Attack/Now I'm Here reprise. All Brian songs, as I recall. |
Asterik 27.01.2006 17:05 |
But that isn't a fully fledged medley in the way that Death On two legs/Killer Queen/Bicycle Race/I'm In Love With my Car/Get Down make love/You're My Best Friend was on the Killers tour fore xample but I agree with you that brian didn't have a problem with it. |
bitesthedust 27.01.2006 17:07 |
It's a short medley.... look at 1974: In The Lap Of The Gods, Killer Queen, Black Queen & Leroy Brown. 4 songs, same as the Japanese 1982 one. |
Asterik 28.01.2006 06:04 |
I contest you again on the NOW I'm Here medley- firstly a full version of Now I'm here is played. The reprise cannot be considered a seperate song- its ridiculous and Dragon Attack gets a pretty full rendition itself. The onlym reason there was a four song medley in 1974 was that they didn't have enough songs to constitute a fuller one. |
