Queen has so many underated albums, but my top five are Queen, Queen2, sheer heart attack, A day at the races and innuendo. Give me your thoughts on the ultimate underated queen album. These albums are rarely mentioned with the best albums of all-time, but we Queen fans no better. My pick is probably Queen2, but it's close |
Gunpowder Gelatine 11.11.2004 14:22 |
By the public, A Day At The Races. It's an amazing album, but most people just pushed it aside after A Night At The Opera. As for underrated amongst fans, probably The Works. A lot of people say it's mediocre, but I think it's a good, solid album with some great singles. |

One of the most underated Queen Album MUST be "The Works" from 1984! It's almost never mention in the Album-favourit-rankings in the magazines, nor by queen-fans. It has so many good and beautiful songs, and many hits on one album! Radio GaGa: (Vinyl Single) A cool and good synt-pop song, and was also high up in the charts, only beaten by Frankie Goes To Hollywoods "Relax"! Tear It Up: A typical and heavy rock song. You can hear on this song, how much Metallica and GunsN Roses was inspired by Queens sound! It's A Hard Life: (Vinyl Single) Its one of my favourit song Ever! I love both the beautiful melody, and the touching lyrics! and dont forget how good the voice of Freddie is on this pop-ballad song! Man On The Prowl: A classic 50's inspired rockabilly song, very unknown other Queen tracks on this album specially! Machines(Or Back To Humans): A typical 80's "Kraftwerk" song. Not one of the best Queen song, but the voice of Freddie "save" the song from being TOO bad! I Want To Break Free: (Vinyl Single) One of the best Synth-pop songs made by Queen, and also in the rest of the music history! A famous, recognable and funny song made by Deacon. Was also good in the charts around the world. Just Keep Passing The Open Windows: (Vinyl Single) A very good and rocking pop/rock song made by Freddie. Its a very typical song of Freddie. In the begining of the song you can hear a magnificient voice by him, and a beautiful melody. Hammer To Fall: (Vinyl Single) A famous classic-rock song made by May. Good rock, and is a power rock song that is nice to play on concerts like Queen did threw the 80's. Is This The World We Created?: (Vinyl Single) A very beautiful and touching song made by Mercury and May, and is recognable with a song like Love Of My Life. Freddie had a magnificient and nice voice, with good guitar playing by May. |

The Artist Formerly Known As Dan Corson wrote: Hot Space. People dismiss it without a fair chance all the time.I agree. Maybe it was not good album for 1982, but now - 22 years ago - we know that Queen came back to rock roots, so it was an experiment and it's great. It was exotic and it's something what I like. Wasn't Bo Rhap an exotic song? And who'd be Queen if they didn't experimented with the sounds? IMO And The Miracle - most of people took it just for singles. |
Mr.Jingles 11.11.2004 16:31 |
Underated among the press... Pretty much all of them (especially 'Queen II', 'ADATR' and 'Innuendo') Underated among fans... 'A Kind Of Magic', 'Jazz' and 'The Miracle' |

Flash Gordon, hands down. |
Lester Burnham 11.11.2004 19:55 |
Oddly enough, I agree about Flash Gordon...it's a nifty album, and not too different from what Bowie was putting out at the time. Just listen to his more atmospheric stuff from Low and "Heroes", and compare that to Execution Of Flash and Escape From The Swamp. Shame it was a soundtrack album and not an album of collected instrumentals, with some of the stronger ideas from that album extended into proper songs. |

Hot Space! (and Flash Gordon...) |

The Works (which is just my favo. album!) and in the press they speak about Wembley like that's the only live album ... but Live Killers is imo also a great live recording! |

Hot Space defenately. |

k-m 12.11.2004 13:03 |
I'd say "A Day At The Races". I think it was even more underrated in 1976 than now. But it is still in the shadow of "Opera". "The Works" is a really good album also. "Innuendo" was excellent, many critics know it, but still too many don't. And finally, "Made In Heaven" - I think it sounds really good, you don't hear such albums every day. It contains also one of the most underrated Queen songs ever - "You Don't Fool Me". I can't believe it was only no. 17 in the UK charts! Fortunately it was a big hit in other European territories. |
deleted user 12.11.2004 13:13 |
I agree. "The Works" is always ignored by "hardcore fans" - but it was their most successful album in the UK charts. It is actually a quintessential Queen album with lots of harmonies and catchy tunes - just classic Queen sound. - it certainly is one of the top five Queen albums. Their best "pop"-album and to my friend Jimi.... I also think that my favourite 70s Queen album "A Day At The Races" is wayyy underrated - and I don't understand why: "Somebody To Love", "The Millionair Waltz" and "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" are masterpieces, and "Teo Torriate" ist the best Queen ballad - I think the album is even better than "A Night At The Opera" |
mystic_rhythms 12.11.2004 13:32 |
The Works, Flash Gordon and Hot Space. The Works - Great rock feel. Hammer To Fall and Tear It Up hold the album's rock attitude, while Radio Ga Ga, It's A Hard Life, and I Want To Break Free mix pop with rock to make a grand combination, and the synths of Machines, though frowned upon, offer an electronic alternative to the rest of the album. A fine album! Flash Gordon - Though many of the songs are either instrumental or feature snippets of dialogue from the movie, this album is one to be enjoyed by all Queen fans. The passion and foundation built by Flash's Theme and The Hero are definitely underestimated. Football Fight, Flash To The Rescue, and In The Space Capsule are instrumental tracks that hold the album and the movie together. A great soundtrack and Queen album! Hot Space - For my money, the MOST underrated Queen album in history! Good opening with Staying Power, good mix of rock and dance with Back Chat, Action This Day (my fave Hot Space song), and Calling All Girls, with the general rock/pop feel of Put Out The Fire, Las Palabras de Amor and Under Pressure. Great experimentation with dance and synths, and a worthy outcome in my humble opinion. Cherish this album; there is NOTHING like it! |

It is so hard to pick an underated album for me because I don't think that any of their albums are bad. I simply love everyone! So I am going to say that EVERYONE of their albums are under-rated. So that would be my answer. EVERYONE of their albums are under-rated. QUEEN should have been HUGE like the BEATLES, or THE STONES or something, but then if they were I probley would not have liked them. So that's that. xoxoFromQueenette |
Mr Fred 12.11.2004 14:34 |
I gotta say that the fact that "the Works" is so underrated is because it has no albumfeeling. It is not like ANATO, not like many other. It is like a collection of singles. Thats the fact. |

Hot Space, definitely. Maybe not the best album they did, but certainly not the trash so many make it out to be. I don't think Queen gets the recognition it deserves either. Brilliant first album!! |

the works has good songs but they're much better live.all of them.compare hammer to fall studio with htf live(and the same with iwtbf, radio ga ga).open windows is a wonderful song but tear it up and man on the prowl are not so special.good songs, yeah, but not so special.machines is one of the worst queen songs. |
OgreBattleField1980 12.11.2004 18:22 |
I think if i had to choose a underated album or albums , i have to say Both The Works and Hot Space , Flash beings that was a soundtrack album too would also fit in the underated catagory. But then again Flash wasnt the typical Queen work either. Im an American , and I dont know if this will come out wrong or not but in America I feel that once the 1980's hit America mistreated Queen in a sense that homophobia took over that part of the country and with the aids scare spreading people tend to sway away from such bands or actors or even actress's just for that simple notion. I feel that it was wrong and I think Queen needs more credit that what they have gotten in America , I mean they didnt even win a Grammy award really , they could have won severle grammys just for their work with the highlander alone , not to mention Bohemian Rhapsody. Heck ill even add Another One Bites the dust since that song seemed to have hit more than just a rock audience , but the black r&b and funk audience as well. What do you people think? |

I think a very underated Queen album is hot space, but i must admit that i didn't like it very much before, but the more i listened to it the better i liked it.Las palabras the amour is one of my favorite tracks on that album and also one of their best songs i think although Queen has so many greate songs it is still one of my favorites, another greate album is the game. does someone agree with the game? Just go on with it or else i forget my name - Freddie Mercury. |

I agree that all their albums are underated, hey how about the game, great album has a good fun feel to it. actually i'm a bit surprised how many people here agree with me about hot space and the works both solid efforts, it's a sin how bad hot space got bashed, back chat is a good tune. yea both very underated. |
mike hunt 13.11.2004 02:52 |
i could go on and on about this, but jazz has to be a bit underated, i love that album and a kind of magic is in the same syle as the works, also very good, who wants to live forever is a classic track, pop/opera singer sarah brightman does a fine cover version. |

...hmmm im probably extremely biased as it was my first queen album (and favorite) but A Day at the Races. I remember how heartbroken I was when my original copy rolled in between a seat and the wall on a train from Osaka to Kyoto -_- ahhh... But as i look through the list i see so many great albums here! Its hard to oreally decide... but I suppose the only ones i do disagree on are flash gordon, the works and possibly a kind of magic (though I prefer AKOM over the other two). Flash Gordon has always put me to sleep... it must trigger a chemical release mechanism in my brain or something....but as stated before the works just DOES NTO seem like an album, it doesnt have the beautiful flow that other queen albums have...its just, awkward... hmmm. |
lyricalassasin77 14.11.2004 11:32 |
By far the 2 most underatted Queen albums were Hot Space and Jazz. True Jazz produced 2 very solid singles in Bicycle Race/Fat Bottomed Girls but the rest of the album seems to have been forgotten to most. "If you can't beat em join em" was a great song and "Fun It" and describing why Hot Space was underatted is pretty much self explanatory by now especially in a Queen forum....lol.......Its too bad that album wasn't received better because it totally ruined them over here in America for some reason..... |

I reckon it's pretty difficult to say what albums were underrated. underrated by who? Some people might say Hot Space was really underrated. Others might just say it was really bad :) I saw someone wrote ADATR. I suppose it was underrated purely because it followed ANATO. It was always going to be underrated. It is I believe Queen's best album. I think many underrate Jazz. But then again, maybe not. It is a bit uneven. Hot Space is a funny one to me. Maybe it's a mood thing. I have heard it loads of times, mostly thinking it's pretty ordinary. Tonight I heard it and thought that it was really good. So I have been underrating Hot Space. I think The Miracle is highly overrated. I don't think Queen II is underrated. Doesn;t everyone agree it is sheer genius? Anyway, I'm sure you get the idea. It's very difficult to assess which albums are underrated because it's impossible to know how they are in fact rated by everyone. If we look at sales figures, that'd be a good place to start. Then at least we could see which albums are rated highly and which were not. But even that is flawed... awww... forget it. |
trustno1 15.11.2004 05:47 |
I'm sorry, but IMO Hot Space is just horrible, and is not rated for a reason. I mean, the synth solo in ATD has to be one of the most profoundly awful things I've ever heard (not even the drum part in the original ICLWY can compete with this mess). I like funk, but HS is just crap and was Queen's ultimate low point for sure. Makes me think, it's easy to criticise Brian and Roger now for destroying the Queen name with their unnecessary musical and continued re-hashing of old hits, but just look at what John and Freddie's musical input resulted in: Hot F**king Space side A! Nuff said. As for Queen's most underrated album, I'd say DATR. Obscured in the shadow of NATO, it's as worthy a follow-up as you could hope for. Damn fine! |
