I was just wondering, whether Queen fans generally prefer early Queen or late Queen. i mean, obviously there are songs from both periods that are really superb. But generally, they changed drastically during the late 80s. I've always preferred the earlier stuff as it's far more raw. Also, does anyone know why Roger and Brian stopped having their own solo songs? All the early albums have at least one song by each of them, which, although Freddie's voive was far superior, was quite refreshing! |
Sebastian 06.11.2004 06:59 |
I guess they wanted their songs to be singles, so they "had to" let Freddie sing them. Note that none of Roger's songs were singles before Calling All Girls. |
Sonia Doris 06.11.2004 10:49 |
definetely early, i'd say - they were cuter then :P i guess the bri and roger not singing is a merely economic decision... |

early queen.absolutely |

I love both, and great material came out of both periods, but I'd have to go with early Queen. Some of their best albums were from that time, not to mention the fact that there were more of them in the 70's than in the later period. |
Yogurt 06.11.2004 13:28 |
I was attracked to Roger in the 70's, but in the early 80's. I love both periods. They did good songs in early and late times. |

I definately have a soft spot for early Queen because i was around when they came out and that's what got me. However, I love it all. :) |

Well in the '70s they where very raw indead, wich I like. Brian sang some songs Roger asswell. And I got three video bootlges from the '70's, their shows where very good, but I think not as good as their '80's shows. cause looking at Hyde Park and comparing it to Wembley or Milton Keynes, I can see they all improved very mutch. and Freddie had mutch more charisma, look at the Rainbow '74, Fred sang very very good, but things like "We have missed you all", "I got the from the devil himself, they don't believe me" where not as powerfull as "Their talking from here (pointing to his ass". i think '80's cause they where more skilled. |
djaef 06.11.2004 18:01 |
No contest. Early Queen (up to an maybe even including The Game), is far superior to later Queen. Not that there aren't any great songs later on - there are many, but overall, the earlier stuff is heaps better. |
Sebastian 06.11.2004 18:55 |
Yes I'm In Love with My Car was B-Side, also '39. But those weren't the (main) side of the single (so they didn't record video for them etc). Long Away was single in the States, but it was only an experiment. |
PabloArg 06.11.2004 20:18 |
The very best of queen are the extremes Extreme early (<1975) and Extreme late (>1990) |
The Fairy King 06.11.2004 21:36 |
can't compare, they are too different so...i don't like the one better than the other. |

I love the middle part. Imagine an apple. Not the skin, nor the core, but the flesh. That's what I like. Early Queen, well at least for me, was experimental. 80-90's Queen waned a bit popularity-wise. Lost North America, gained S. America. But in the middle part of their colorful lives, they had the world in the palm of their hands. |

I can't Decide .... I like so many songs from the Early days but in the late Queen they have so much feelings in their songs. I think It's the middle that I doesn't like so much. |
Sebastian 07.11.2004 10:33 |
As far as I know, IILWMC was B-Side of a single, not A-Side. In the same way Tenement Funster was part of Queen's First EP but it wasn't the lead track. Maybe (I'm not sure) there was some CD single of IILWMC after Queen Rocks or recently with the whole Jaguar thing, but that's technically after Calling All Girls which was 22 years ago |
lottie88 07.11.2004 12:03 |
I personally love early Queen. I think it is beacause it seems to have more of a rock edge, vs. the more pop sound of the 1980's. |

It's hard to say,I like both in different ways, they changed for the better. I think many artists hope to do that, to make their next creation better than the first ( except Hot Space in their case) so I guess I would say the later becuase they just kept getting better. |
KillerQueen840 07.11.2004 12:10 |
First of all, welcome to Queenzone.. second of all, I think that they both can't compare..cos they were outstanding in both times..I think their songs matured and there style changed a bit over time, so I think that both times were great and different. |
fat-bottomed girl 07.11.2004 12:37 |
It seems most people (like me) prefer early Queen- it was far rockier. But I agree that some of their later songs were really emotional and moving. Songs like too much love... the show must go on etc still get to me. And from what i've seen on this site over the years, it seems that people prefer the albums from the early days and the singles from the late- well, that's my theory anyway:) |

ThomasQuinn wrote: But 'Innuendo' is better than 'Made In Heaven', which is basically just a compilation of posthumously finished bits and pieces.Well, I do not agree with you. My Favorite album is A Night At The Opera followed by Tommy from the Who and The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust. But after that Made In Heaven is on the fourth place.(Not that the things from Ziggy and Tommy would bother you. and you would also be completly bored if I'd tell you that Achutng Baby from U2 is the 5th, followed by Seveteen seconds from the Cure, and after that Shear Heart Attack, Jazz and The Game. but I'm not going to inform you about my top ten from albums, cause it woudl just bore you) I completely love evry song from that album, and the last instrumental thing... C'est Bon. |

Hmmm...very hard decision. All Queen eras have great albums and songs. It really depends on my mood I guess. Sometimes I prefer the reflective 90's, other times the pop 80's or the raw rocking 70's. They are so different that it's like comparing apples and oranges. Also, the Stage Shows in the 80's were some of the best of any band ever. All in All i'll call it a draw. |

i prefer earlier queen.... i dont really like synths and all that jazz, it sounds, old fashioned (though a good old fashioned!). and they were hotter with the long hair. monte |

If I had to choose, I would probably choose their early stuff. It just appeals to me more, but that does not mean that I do not appreciate Queen as a whole, 80's music included. But as far as personal choice goes, I would choose their 70's stuff. I can relate more to it and I connect better with the songs. |
PrincesofTheUniverse 08.11.2004 07:11 |
No contest for me - Queen pre '76 is my favourite period. Nothing really comes close to the first 4 albums, with the exception of Innuendo. I love most of the other stuff, especially Innuendo & MIH, but early Queen for me every time. |
Little Yellow Daffodil 08.11.2004 16:26 |
Early Queen, that's all I've got to say. :-) |
Mr.Jingles 08.11.2004 16:41 |
Too hard to choose... Arguably Queen's best music came from Queen II (1974) to ADATR (1976) But you can't deny that Queen also had a very inspiring period of musical excellence from 'A Kind Of Magic' (1986) to 'Made In Heaven' (1995) |
The Mad Hatter 08.11.2004 17:54 |
I like both early and later Queen a lot, but I think that before 1977 and 1991 are my favorites. Not that the stuff in between isn't good, but those are the periods I like the most. Holly |

The seventies- the 'no synths' era... I dislike the 1982-86 period... |

Early Queen was their glam rock era. I guess that ended when 'The Game' was released It was the first album with synthesizers. Later Queen before Miracle and Innuendo it was almost as if Queen were a pop band in the 80's |
Flo Joe 09.11.2004 14:33 |
The early Queen. And Innuendo. |

It completely shows in their albums and concerts after that. For me, they didn't seem to revive their overall musical quality until The Miracle. |
OgreBattleField1980 11.11.2004 22:44 |
My favorite has to be the 70's Queen , as Freddies vocals in my opinion were alot more pure and he wasnt forcing it, I have the 86 Wembley dvd and the We Will Rock You Dvd, and a Bootleg of Live at Earls court , and if i had to choose one as my favorite id choose earls court simply by Freddies voice , and set list alone. With the only exception being the version of Somebody to love on the We Will Rock You dvd ,also i was never sure of which concert that the We Will Rock You Dvd was recorded the only thing i know for sure is that it was in Montreal , not sure if it was in 1981 or 82 tho. Now on the other hand , I happen to like The Miracle and Innuendo , the rest of their 80's albums really didnt appeal to me that much except for a few songs on The Game. Then again even Jazz really didnt appeal to me as I only like two songs on that entire album , which are Fat Bottom Girls and Dead on Time. |

the best time in the hitory of rock was 75-80 and that goes for queen too in that time they had their greatest and most emotional hits |
