Any thoughts on who was Queen's best producer, and why? I'd vote for the Roy Thomas Baker era --brought out the glam/operatic style. David Richards put a fine touch on Innuendo etc as well...
Different king of job for producer: in the beginning Mr Baker was like teacher for them and much later Mr Richards and Mr Mack were more than soundengineers, but not producers at the full way.
So my answer is: Queen by themselves.
sorry. no. Roy Thomas Baker....because he taught them everything they would ever need to know about production....without him they would not have learned so quickly - he involved them "hands on"
I vote for Roy. I guess it wouldn't be easy to produce multi-layered vocals and guitars and reversed cymbals with stereo effects and stuff back in 1973 and make them sound so great. Plus he had to please four very talented and exigent musicians and he did it. Hats off to Roy.
My biased opinion would be Roy Thomas Baker, he worked on my fave Queen albums but also as a sound engineer myself I can see (well, hear) just how technically brilliant he is. I find Mack to be very hit and miss, his work with Queen was good but also very generic, its only really the grandeur of Queens music and the ideas of the band themselves that really lift the production, if you listen to some of his other work on more straight forward albums such as Sparks' Whomp That Sucker LP you will hear that his production techniques are generally very flat and uninspired, a man that clearly needs a muse.
