why do the people compare the darkness to Queen? don't take offence but i think that who thinks the darkness are the new Queen didn't understand the musical logic that Queen used.According to me the darkess are only a band of people that think to know how to exploit on the Queen POP-fans despite their music doesn't seem ispired at all by Queen either,I really don't understand why you prefer darkness to play with Queen instead of Robert Plant, or Foo Fighters, so tell me why you want to see a shit singer like the one of the darkness singing bohemian rhapsody |
Wayne Gretzky 04.09.2004 09:51 |
Justin Hawkins is NOT a shit singer. Why I want to see him instead of Robert Plant? I'm not saying that Plant can't sing, but he's not really a great singer. |
akan 04.09.2004 09:59 |
ROBERT PLANT ISN'T A GREAT SINGER???????????are you joking?????did you ever listened to him singing?did you ever listened to some somgs from by a band called LED ZEPPELIN?he was freddie mercury's favourite singer, maybe his performance of Innuendo at the freddie's tribute may be not too beautiful, but how can you say that robert plant isn'ta great singer?he and freddie are the best singers in rock music history. listen to 'Since I've been loving you', 'Heartbreaker', 'Dazed and confued','Whole lotta love' and you'll see a little example of robert plant vocal technic, he could express the emotions of Queen music like a few existing rock singers for sure |
Wayne Gretzky 04.09.2004 10:01 |
Yeah, I have heard those songs, and, yes they are quite nice. But he's not much of a singer live. |
The Fairy King 04.09.2004 10:31 |
your an ass! stop shitting on The Darkness and get a life dude! i hate wankers *sigh* |
Wayne Gretzky 04.09.2004 10:46 |
"Just to remind you, Freddie couldn't do 'Immigrant Song' live. He didn't manage the screams and some of the vocals." When did we start to talk about Freddie? Wasn't this about the Darkness? "If you only heard him at the FM Tribute Concert (which you clearly have), don't make such stupid comments which make people estimate your IQ even lower than it actually is." I have heard more of him live than just at the Tribute concert. So now you start insulting me just because I don't like Robert Plant? Did I insult you? I heard "Stairway To Heaven" live a few days ago (don't know if it was "How The West Was Won") and on that song he couldn't reach the high notes. I'm shure Hawkins would have managed to do it. |
Wayne Gretzky 04.09.2004 10:53 |

Eirik Drange 04.09.2004 11:55 |
to start of with; I like the Darkness. these days, they are probably the best new rock band (or band even) around I think they have produced some good songs - and judgning from a live gig I saw on tv - they know how to play as well But to start comparing Justin Hawkins to Robert Plant??? Get a grip, man!! or get a q-tip..... Hawkins is nowhere NEAR Plant. to suggest Hawkins can match Plant, or sing better is just stupid Plant is probably THE best rock vocalist in history (only one FM comes close IMO) - and that's coming from someone who's not THAT big a fan of Zeppelin Sure Hawkins can hit some high notes. But I bet everything I own that Plant when he was as old as hawkins is now could do alle the same things with without problems. and what's more impressive; the notes plant can hit today, at 55, is astonishing. I saw him live last year - and it was shivers down the spine for 2 hours straight. you have no idea how his voice filled the room. I can only imagine what it was like 20 and 30 yrs ago... and another thing; screaming some high notes seem to be the only thing Hawkins is good at. apart from that - his voice is medicore! - Plant on the other hand has big range - and the sheer power and craft in his voice speaks for itself. there is little or none power in what hawkins does and btw; the darkness gig I saw live - hawkins didn't hit the highest notes on all the songs at all!! and he's what? 30? by suggesting that hawkins is a better singer than plant, you insult everybody with a set of ears in order. or ONE ear in order. |
Eirik Drange 04.09.2004 11:59 |
and you think Hawkins would have done a better job on the high notes in Stairway..... jesus christ.... |
Mr.Jingles 04.09.2004 12:11 |
Robert Plant USED to be a very good singer back in the days of Led Zep. His voice is acceptable today, but not as good as it used to be. And Taylor Hawkins is nothing but a Freddie Mercury wannabe. |
the-rock 4283 04.09.2004 12:46 |
the darkness: i saw them live on the frequency festival, and found them kinda boring. too formulaic and too "ironic" or whatever. an imho too guitar oriented. --> overrated. to compare them with some poeple's favourite enemy, namely robbie williams, i have to say that his concert was much more entertaining and enjoyable , and in a way closer to the experience of a queen show than a "the darkness" concert. so this opinion is mine, and nobody has to follow it. ok. (btw im not somethin like a newbie - despite a low number of posts - but i prefer to read instead of writing evey though i have) |
Giacco 73 04.09.2004 13:10 |
I'm going to see Darkness tomorrow evening at "Indipendent Day Festival" in Bologna,Italy, near my home town,so I can judge by myself.I admit I'm very curious to see them play live,as a whole Band and not only for the vocal abilities of Justin Hawkins.I think they're the sum of their influences right now,of Queen,AC/DC,Thin lizzy,Aerosmith.Like Queen at their beginning, which brought in their sound influences of Beatles and Led Zeppelin.(By the way,I love the fact that Queen didn't brought in their sound too much blues influences, which after a few listen i get bored with, contrary of tons of other great bands like the same Led Zeppelin). But with one big difference.Queen kickstart with their own musical personalities delivering from the beginning a brand new, caracteristic sound and not a mere carbon copy of their favourite Bands. That'why they are still surviving.Originality is the key of everlasting success.I like Robert Plant voice,is like a Primal Scream. In fact,I'm very into Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. But if you wanna go with high screams I prefere Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, which i place 3rd in my favourite poll sigers of all time and the icredible, incomparable and out of this world vocal range of Rob Halford of Judas Priest, which by the way is a Freddie and Queen fan.I saw him in Judas Priest reunion tour,he is 53 years old and live is still amazing.I'll tell you how are Darkness live after tomorrow. |
Lord Blackadder 04.09.2004 13:14 |
Robert Plant can't really do any wrong according to me because of Zeppelin, no matter what song he songs. And so far The Darkness havn't offended me yet. Their songs are really good. The comparisons come from what he wears on stage and because they are rather outrageous... And neither Plant nor Hawkins are shit singers. |
LiarLiar 04.09.2004 14:13 |
ROBERT PLANT IS ONE OF THE BETS VOICES OF ROCK AND ROLL EVER.... The singer of The Darkness is just a fledgling beginner. Let The Darkness do their own music if any, Queen is Queen and nothing else but that. Period. |
BornToBeKings 04.09.2004 14:16 |
Don't believe the hype. I am a fan of The Darkness, but the only thing they have in common with Queen are the catsuits worn by Justin Hawkins. |

I don't know why everybody's so offended by The Darkness. Just because they were influenced by Queen doesn't mean they're ripping them off. They drew their influence from a lot of older rock bands; Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Aerosmith, and yes, Queen. I've always thought it was great that they were fans of my favorite band; I think it shows that they have good music taste. |
akan 04.09.2004 15:29 |
no one is offended by the darkness, i don't understand why a lot of people compare them to queen which have nothing to do with the darkness and voted them to team up with queen in the weekly poll |
Libor2 04.09.2004 18:18 |
Robert Plant is exceptionally good singer, one of the best voice in rock history. And it’s not only in vocal range (btw his vocal range today is really narrower comparing to Led Zeppelin era - but it’s the matter of age amongst other aspects), but he has fantastic music feeling and vocal dynamic when he sings. And then: I’d say I like Darkness. I enjoy their music - it’s fresh, guitar oriented, fine. I don’t wanna say it’s something new, but who could find anything new in music today. And in Darkness music you can find they are influenced with AC/DC, The Cure, etc. etc. and - with Queen (some guitar solos on ’Permission to Land’ are almost obvious). I agree Hawkins vocal is a little bit strange - you can like it or hate it - I think there’s nothing between. But after all I think Darkness music is closer to Queen (speaking about live performance) than LedZepp. Sorry but I can’t imagine Robert Plant singing Queen - it’s simply not his music style. And Robert performance on FM Tribute was not good (saying it diplomatically) and he wasn’t happy with it either I think. |
KillerQueen840 04.09.2004 19:03 |
I know I'm probably gonna make some enimies my saying this but.... I don't really like The Darkness either....I'm a hard core Queen fan and I don't find them too comparable...although it's cool that they were influenced by Queen...my cousin claims how she hates Queen but she loves The Darkness..... |
Eirik Drange 05.09.2004 06:04 |
I'd like to see hawkins yodle his way through cray little thing.... and I think plant could have sunger other queen tracks and delivered the goods - whereas hawkins hasn't got a range at all I have nothing against the darkness and hawkins. I really enjoy them!!! but to claim he can match robert plant is just stupid. wake up folks ps; I've always wanted to hear plant do save me for some reason... |
Eirik Drange 05.09.2004 06:08 |
Darkness is closer to Queen than Zep. yes. - but what's that got to do with anything? :) |
Simmer 05.09.2004 06:56 |
The Darkness doesn't offend me actually... And Robert Plant is considered the #2 best rock vocalist of all-time. Look at this link: link |

I dont see much of queen in darkness. only how hawkins dress, and his teeth looks very familier with freddies. I like darkness, i like the music, and i think its gd that a real rock band is so big. Now ppl grow up and think rock is crappy bands like limp bizkit, and busted. noiw young ppl can lern what rock is, and if they like darkness and hear aburt other greats band, like queen and the who from them, and they are gona about that to (more money to you brian). LOVE THE DARKNESS! |
brENsKi 05.09.2004 17:20 |
comparisons in music have always been rife....oasis to beatles, jet to ac/dc and the DANKNESS to queen. personally i think the DANKNESS are a poor-man's spinal tap...they epitomise everything crap about plagiarism - without the intended joke or the flattery |
Adam Baboolal 05.09.2004 20:43 |
You see, that's the problem. Some see the joke part and think that's all they are. While others see a really decent rock band having fun. Unfortunately, these comparisons come around because of media or the equally bored. :) But how can you compare The Darkness, a very new act, with a really well established band - full of history like Queen, etc.? First of all, it's not really fair and to be honest a little premature at this stage. Time is needed to really see where things go for them. But like it always goes, you either love or hate them. Just like how things began for another band... Peace, Adam. |

Oberon 06.09.2004 05:54 |
I think the Darkness have some good tunes, but I think Justin needs to cut down on the falsetto. He does too much IMO. Otherwise, they're fun, but the second album will be interesting. Can they maintain that fun element or will it just get a little stale and boring? We shall see... |
Eirik Drange 06.09.2004 09:23 |
I hope they deliver big time on the second album. the world needs a new good rock band!!! but for god's sake - don't suggest hawkins is a better singer than robert plant! |

Eirik Drange wrote: I hope they deliver big time on the second album. the world needs a new good rock band!!! but for god's sake - don't suggest hawkins is a better singer than robert plant!Believe me... when bands have to come up with a new album, they have to bring some kind of originality. With the Darkness that's a NO. Certainly the world needs a good rock band, but The Darkness are nothing but a joke, so you can cross them from the list. |
Canadian May Fan 06.09.2004 14:53 |
I don't mind The Darkness as a band per se, I just wish the lead singer would quit it with the high-pitched ad-libs -- he sounds completely ridiculous! |

Dear F-ing god, you people must be shitting me. There are 3 things I want you all to know... a) I love Queen (Freddie Mercury) b) I love The Darkness (Justin Hawkins) c) I love Led Zeppelin (Robert Plant) ...do I think either is vocally better the others? No. They are each independantly unique and commendable for their contributions to music. Argue that till you turn blue. They each have their own qualities, strong points, etc. Justin can't sing things Plant could. Plant can't sing things Freddie could.... so what? 'andrew' darling, stop shitting on The Darkness, they are not the 'new Queen' but at least are in the same vein. I admire them for bringing back that glam magic and the prog sound, but they are in no way ripping Queen off by doing so. If they flew onto the music scene with an album full of Queen covers, then maybe, but THEY ARE THEIR OWN BAND. You may be against The Darkness... go right ahead, but don't bring others into it by saying that the three aformentioned frontmen don't all deserve props for all they've done. They each created their own legions of fans with their own style and interpretations of what music is... I think that says alot of all three of them. And personally, the most sensible post in this forum so far goes to Gunpowder Gelatine, when they wrote: ** "I don't know why everybody's so offended by The Darkness. Just because they were influenced by Queen doesn't mean they're ripping them off. They drew their influence from a lot of older rock bands; Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Aerosmith, and yes, Queen. I am biased ;-) as you may be too. And as for who the poll to see who the members would like to see Queen perform with, 'andrew'... it IS a POLL, and my friends, THE PEOPLE have spoken- like it or not. |

I give my contribution to this topic.I saw Darkness at Indipendent Day Festival in Bologna,Italy, near my home town on 5th September.A very good way to celebrate Freddie Birthday! In fact, during the concert the audience led them to play an impromptu and for his major part played on guitar by Justin Hawkins version of We Will Rock You.By the way,he is a fab singer, maybe unidimensional with his falsetto but it's his trademark. They were very happy of this and finally praised Queen. Not to mention their stage presence and costumes taken straight back to the Queen of the 70'S.They are a very funny and enterteining combo, full of energy, freshness and carisma. They appeared to me more american that british, searching to be more similar to band like Aerosmith or,to say,Van halen.I prefere by far bands from the UK or that sound like they come from Great Britain but it's a matter of taste.Their major merit to me is that they brought back to rock the happy side of the story, the will to live and to be over the top. They blew away the definitively the Grunge scene from Seattle, that sometimes good but always depressing and self-indulging way to make Rock and Roll!American rockers sometimes take them too serious in making music and lyrics. They rediscovered the truly roots of our beloved music. They are developing their own personality but I can say that they rapresent just one face, the happy and easy listening one,of a wonderful, full of meanings, never ending and unique diamond called Queen... |

The darkness do suck. I have no problem with them following queen but they lack one major factor-variety. Listen to their ONE album , all the songs roll into one and sound very similar. Queen didnt suffer from this beacause of 4 songwriters. The darkness do, their next album will show if their music evolves enough to be called brilliant. |
The Real Wizard 16.09.2004 18:19 |

The Man On The Prowl 17.09.2004 04:40 |
A Defence of Contest of Genres... Of course the style of Darkness is very different from the style of Queen, they almost cannot be compared, especially if you are thinking about the 70's. Queen had a great creativity, a great ability to compose and a unique feeling while performing which I think no other band will have, you know, the way Freddie stressed the words he was singing, the way Brian touched the strings with his sixpence and the way he stressed the notes he was playing... The Darkness have a different style of composing and a different feeling while performing. I don't think they like to be compared with Queen, nor I think they are exploiting the "Queen pop fans", that is far from their goals. I have Led Zepplin I, II, III and IV and Permission To Land by The Darkness and I have listened to these five albums a lot of times. I saw Robert Plant live once at the Montreux Jazz Festival (July 2001), but unfortunately they covered other bands' songs on that occasion, and I saw The Darkness live once in Turin (July 2004). Justin Hawkins is far from being Freddie, his voice will never be fit to sing Love Of My Life as Freddie sang it on A Night At The Opera (a masterpiece of singing!!!) or any other Queen ballad. But I think it's perfect for the genre which The Darkness are intentioned to follow. Of course Robert Plant is a great singer, he is a master of passages from chest voice to falsetto. But seen in the contest of their specific genres, which are different, I think Robert and Justin are almost on the same level. |
