Is anyone else in the USA going to be invaded by 5 billion cicadas in the next few days? I know I am and am not looking forward to it. For those that do not know what cicadas are...they are locusts that come to certain areas of the USA every 17 years. In my surrounding area we are expecting over 5 billion. I was 12 last time they came and bugs were kind of cool then, but now I am not so sure. Wish me luck. |
Daburcor? 12.05.2004 19:51 |
Yipes! Good luck Lisser! I hope they don't come here. You aren't in North Carolina are you (I hope hot. LOL!)? |

I'm in Jersey and I was actually going to make a post on this... I'm EXTREMELY frightened because my worst nightmare is, well, being invaded by large bugs. Or bugs in general. Plus, I'm working in a day camp this summer and I guess I'll have to request an indoor activity because I am NOT getting swarmed by shrimp-sized cicadas!! |
Lisser 13.05.2004 07:34 |
No Dan, I am ten minutes south of Cincinnati Ohio. I'm not frightened by the bugs but they are going to be annoying. They will most definately limit the amount of time we can spend outdoors without being "bugged!" Oh I am so funny. Good thing is is that they will only be here for about six weeks and with each week that goes by, their numbers diminish. |

I'm near Cleveland. I remember the last time all too well. Ugh, I hate them. |
Lisser 13.05.2004 08:50 |
I going to hijack my own topic here and ask Janet if she is planning on going to the convention in Cleveland, of course. I really want to go and if I do go I'd like to look for some of you. :) |
deleted user 13.05.2004 12:14 |
They have come around here, too. I don't remember them being too annoying other than the loud noises that all of them made. |
Daburcor? 13.05.2004 12:19 |
That's the exact reason to despise them. ;) |
Janet 13.05.2004 18:30 |
Lisser, Sadly I won't be able to attend this year. If you go, I hope you have a wonderful time. :-) |
TheMiracle 13.05.2004 18:59 |
If I go to the more grassier and desert part of Utah, there are infestations of mormon crickets every year. Disgusting cause they're everywhere! |
rhapsody__87 13.05.2004 20:02 |
Ew crickets ewewewew. Oh GOD I hate bugs. Except ladybugs-- a few weeks ago, a ladybug named Sal resided in my bathroom for only a weekend until I made my dad let him out in the front yard because he was looking quite sickly. I even took a picture of him with my phone... so cute. :D |

Lisser 14.05.2004 17:32 |
that is so awesome peter!!! I have a couple good friends from Lawrenceberg!! I have spent my fair share of time and money there as well at Argosy!! I haven't found any cicadas yet in my yard and i have a 263 acre farm that my backyard butts up to. I am sort of in a crazy way looking forward to seeing them bc i was 12 last time they were here. It kind of reminds me of my childhood. Now I didn't hit them with bats. I'm afraid I did something a little more cruel. My brother showed me that if you pull their front legs off, their eyes go back into their skull. It's pretty gross I know but hey, I was 12. Besides, it wasn't my idea, my brother made me do it. Yea! blame him!! Iron Eagle, I hope I can still go even if I miss registration. I was planning on flying in for one afternoon to just check things out. If that isn't possible I understand. This would be my first convention. I'll pay whatever I need to pay though and can I buy a Tshirt there? Thanks! |
geeksandgeeks 14.05.2004 19:30 |
GAAAAAAAAH!!!! NO! MY STUPID BROTHER! HE KEEPS BRINGING THEM INTO MY HOUSE! I will not have those bugs in the house, I won't. But, as always, my parents have decided it's cute and are perfecty willing to have the house crawling with them...grrrrr... |
iGSM 14.05.2004 21:49 |
Oh, they're nothing to worry about. It's the Killer Queen Bees I'd worry about. |
Daburcor? 14.05.2004 21:53 |
*dances the "hopefully won't get attacked by cicadas" dance* |
iGSM 15.05.2004 07:02 |
Too bad that dance was reveresed in 1923 meaning it actually attracted the cicadas. |

LOL iGSM! |

There's a hilarious Yahoo story about them being a danger to children. Not for being harmful themselves, but for childrens' stupidity about them. link Peter, did you ever hit a friend on the head with a bat whilst trying to kill one? :) I haven't noticed any increase here in Kansas yet, but we always have them in the warmer months anyway. They constantly hit my front door at night when the porchlight is on. |

Hey Lisser, there's another QZer who I haven't seen in a while also from Florence. Girl named Camsmom. I think we need an N. Ky. convention! The QZ Cicada Convention! |
Lisser 15.05.2004 19:05 |

Oh, man... Pardon me while I bang the head against the wall a few times! DUH! Hello Melissa! Oh man, they swarmed to my yard today. The driveway is littered with cicada corpses. And I thought that horrible buzzing noise was my air conditioner! |
Lisser 17.05.2004 07:39 |

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!! NO! I WILL NOT HAVE BUGS IN GERMAN CLASS! It is hard enough to be discussing Terminator movies auf Deutsch without fifty little bugs zooming happily around your head and the ditsy girl behind you screeching her head off. Looks like they've finally hit. I'm going to wear shells on my earrings tomorrow. This is too weird. |
rhapsody__87 18.05.2004 16:51 |
I have yet to see one of those nasty little buggers. Ten bucks says tomorrow I see one and run away screaming... |

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A man who cooked and ate nearly 30 cicadas sought medical treatment after suffering a strong allergic reaction to the sauteed insects. AP Photo Slideshow: Trillions of Cicadas Emerge From Slumber The man showed up at a Bloomington clinic Thursday covered from head-to-toe in hives, and sheepishly told a doctor he'd caught and ate the cicadas after sauteing them in butter with crushed garlic and basil. "He said they didn't taste too bad, but his wife didn't care for the aroma," said Dr. Al Ripani, the doctor who treated the man at Promptcare East. The man, who has a history of asthma and shellfish allergies, suffered a "significant allergic reaction," after eating the cicadas, Ripani said. He said he gave the man antihistamines, steroids and a shot of adrenaline, then observed him for two hours before sending him home. After living underground for 17 years and feeding on tree roots, the so-called Brood X cicadas are emerging by the billions across the Eastern U.S. Ripani said recent newspaper articles extolling the tastiness of cicada cuisine should have warned people that dining on the bugs can be dangerous for some people. "Severe food allergies such as this can be fatal," he said. "I feel that needs to be stressed in these articles." He said the University of Maryland's department of entomology's Cicada-licious cookbook, which includes recipes for Cicada Stir-Fry and Cicada Dumplings, contains a disclaimer urging people to consult a doctor before eating cicadas. "We ask that you please take special caution if you have other food allergies, such as soy, nuts or shellfish, or if you know of any contact allergies that you may have to other insects," it states. ___ |

I find it extremely amusing that such a harmless, clumsy bug is resulting in injury and illness in humans due to their own stupidity. |
rhapsody__87 18.05.2004 20:46 |
Well, bugs are scary. |
