Did anybody else read about this on Brianmay.com? The commercial is bad enough but this cries sellout even more to me. Brian must be short of cash or something. He no longer seems interested in making new music, just rehasing the same old stuff, over and over and over and over again. How many versions of We Will Rock You have their been over the last 13 years?! |
YourValentine 30.01.2004 08:32 |
I suppose you are referring to the changes in the lyrics for that night, adding all kind of Pepsi references into the songs ? I wonder who wrote them. I copied this from amq: Theatre jeers for queens of pop by CLAIR WEAVER, Evening Standard It was one of the most expensive soft drink promotions ever and included three of the world's hottest pop divas. But the premiere of the Pepsi Gladiators advertisement - which features Britney Spears, Beyonce and Pink clad in skimpy gladiator outfits singing We Will Rock You - left many fans furious after an expected performance never materialised. Having met thousands of fans and been interviewed by press from around the world in Trafalgar Square, the trio were scheduled to appear at the Dominion Theatre, where the musical of Queen's We Will Rock You is playing. But an hour after the show was due to start, they had still not appeared. The audience began slow clapping, whistling and shouting "Hurry up" and "Get on with the show". A flustered event official was overheard saying: "She's had a big strop and still hasn't arrived. We said just get up on the stage and do your thing." It was unclear which of the stars she was referring to. Finally, a Pepsi official took to the stage to announce the new three-minute advertisement would be screened. The announcement was met with a collective groan. When the three stars, accompanied by Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor, walked on stage, there was a lukewarm response. A minute later and without saying a word, they had left. |

"Brian must be short of cash or something." I really had the same thought about Roger. Didn't he also (have to???) sell his house? Sorry, don't want to give currency to a rumour and probably Roger had other reasons. But the thought is obvious. |
Mr. Scully 30.01.2004 09:32 |
Brian's approach is TOTALLY, TOTALLY wrong. He always suggests that he doesn't do this for money and that "it's great fun to work with such a talented artist like Oh, and I never understood the big deal about Pepsi/Coca Cola. Both taste the same to me and I don't drink either of them anyway because each of these drinks includes more shitty substances than virtually any alcohol. Thank you but I don't want to look like a fat pig. |

They changed some lines for that eventful night. Oh no! It went back to normal the next. I think all this Pepsi talk has been going on for too long. It's not really going anywhere now. They all made some cash, the girls and boys had some fun and us guys..? We got to fight! Shall I get the football? :) Peace, Adam. |
geeksandgeeks 30.01.2004 15:56 |
Oh, please, guys. You know, maybe Brian actually does consider it fun to work with Britney, I wouldn't know, I'm not him. And in all honesty, I don't have that big a problem with it, the band never out up an anti-commercial front. It is therefore NOT SELLING OUT! GOD, I hate it when people do that! I would rather it not be Pepsi, the most disgusting soft-drink ever... |
Erin 30.01.2004 17:33 |
About a couple of years ago, Pieter and I joked about who would be the next crap "artist" to work with Brian.. We were like.."Ha ha..yeah...what's next..BRITNEY SPEARS..haha.." :-( Pepsification of the musical...that is the most ridiculous thing I have heard yet. I would have been so pissed if I paid good money to go see the musical only to find myself at an extended advertisement for Pepsi. Pepsi sucks anyway..;-) |
Saffron Caribou 30.01.2004 22:47 |
Erin that goes to show you, be careful what you say ;) |
Adam Baboolal 30.01.2004 23:44 |
"I would have been so pissed if I paid good money to go see the musical only to find myself at an extended advertisement for Pepsi." Eh?? That's like telling every panto in the land to stop being topical! And it was only for one night. How unforgiving are people right now? Peace, Adam. |
Erin 31.01.2004 00:02 |
Yeah, but if it was the one night I happened to be there, I wouldn't of liked it. |
Adam Baboolal 31.01.2004 18:44 |
Boo hoo, some insignificant words were changed. I'm surprised it would ruin it for you. Why is it comedians get away with one night jokes, but a successful musical can't? Peace, Adam. |
geeksandgeeks 31.01.2004 19:14 |
Adam, i think you're the only one on this whole board who gets it. |
earwig 01.02.2004 09:56 |
Hang on a minute... Maybe this has nothing to do with money! Nobody has mentioned the E word: EXPOSURE As a regular kind of 28 year old english guy I can't stand the Monarchy/ Royal family but if Queen and the cast hadn't of played at the Buckingham palace gig (and Prince Phillip's Party in the park) We will rock you might not even be still running now! Also, even though I'm quite 'left' in my politics, there's nothing wrong with wanting to make a bit more money. Brian is a self confessed work-a-holic so again money might not even be an issue. Roger on the other hand is a different kettle of fish...!!! |

"How many versions of We Will Rock You have their been over the last 13 years?!" To answer your question, not counting unofficial remixes Original Version (1977) BBC Slow/Fast Version (1977) Live Killers version bside (1979) Rick Rubin Remixes (feat. Chad and Flea from Red Hot Chilli Peppers) (1991 - even though there was no new Queen material recorded) Wembley 86 single version (1992, double A with Champions live) 5ive Version (1999 featuring Brian May) 5ive Version - Radio Edit (featuring Queen) John Farnham Version (2003) Pepsi Version (Queen + Britney, Beyonce, Pink) (2003, released 2004) My bet goes to Robbie Williams next |
Rich Tea 01.02.2004 15:59 |
Oh you've missed The Radio 1 session/Live fast version at least I'm sure there are others. |

"About a couple of years ago, Pieter and I joked about who would be the next crap "artist" to work with Brian.. We were like.."Ha ha..yeah...what's next..BRITNEY SPEARS..haha.."" I joked about it on this noticeboard, and someone was like "don't even joke about it". There we have it. |
Mr. Scully 02.02.2004 07:43 |
I used to say the same ("thank god he works with 5ive; just imagine if it was Britney Spears instead"). But Brian is right and we're all stupid. Can't you see how talented Britney is and what a great honour for Queen it is to appear in a videoclip with her for half a second? |
PieterMC 02.02.2004 07:52 |
"But Brian is right and we're all stupid. Can't you see how talented Britney is and what a great honour for Queen it is to appear in a videoclip with her for half a second?" When you put it like that, of course Brian is right and we are all idiots. |

"musical sucks that's ur own opinion" The reviews were 99% bad, a lot of people hate it - only stepfords seem to really like it :) |
Adam Baboolal 02.02.2004 17:47 |
"only stepfords seem to really like it" I went in thinking it was gonna be boring and as soon as I heard Innuendo, I knew it'd have its moments and be fun. And afterwards, I met Brian himself. Even better! IMO lol! Peace, Adam. |
geeksandgeeks 02.02.2004 21:05 |
It doesn't sound all that bad... I mean, it can't be any worse than Mamma Mia. |
NoOneButYou1975 02.02.2004 21:14 |

Saint Jiub 02.02.2004 21:30 |
I saw the musical at Breakthru 2003, and it seemed like I was the only one who thought it sucked. Most Queen fans there could overlook the lame plot, but I could not ... |

"The reviews were 99% bad" How about the reviews by Queen fans? Yes, some people have seen it and don't like it but I'd say the majority have liked it. It's full of Queen music, so people who like the music are better judges of it than the theatre critics - I remember one review where the guy pretty much admitted that he hated Queen...how's he supposed to give a fair review when he has to listen to Queen songs for the whole show?? |

Adam Baboolal 03.02.2004 21:27 |
"I saw the musical at Breakthru 2003" Wait a mo! Is that the crappy videoed version?? Jeez, no-wonder you didn't like it. Like others have said, you really need to experience it 'live'. I'd seen clips and felt it to be cold. And that's why I had the bad feeling when I was dragged to the show. But I was pleasantly surprised. This happens every year at my theatre group. Watching the show live is fantastic. But when we watch the recorded versions, it hasn't got that fun factor from seeing and experiencing it. What was the production of sound and picture like? I mean, was it like a concert rig-up for cameras and soundboard sound? Like a proper video release? Peace, Adam. |
Mr. Scully 04.02.2004 02:22 |
I agree that seeing one thing live and watching it on DVD/TV makes a HUGE difference. When I saw Bejart Ballet on VHS, I was bored to death and fell asleep. Seeing it live was much more entertaining. So I'm gonna see this WWRY hype for sure but I really don't expect to change my opinion about it. Good singers? Maybe. Good show? Definitely. Plot? Lame. Art? No. |
*goodco* 04.02.2004 04:00 |
The film was top-notch, with different camera angles, absolutely grade A sound. Despite the 2112 and Kilroy Was Here plot, there were enough good/great moments to make me want to see it live (NOBY on its own made it worthwhile). The other great thing: unlike the showings of Houston 77 the previous two years, and the Hollywood concert this past year, everybody kept their mouths shut. Nothing like spending all that money to see our highlights of the weekend, just to have people talking and laughing during LOML and 70% of the rest of the videos. Those same people may claim they've seen Houston, but they certainly didn't hear it. Hopefully this year, those who want to talk will stay out of the room, or they'll crank the stereo up a tad more. |
