well I've just seen it and I was dissapointed as the song didn't have the kick to it that recent versions have had. Still, I bet it looks and sounds great at the cinema! Britney sounds like she's got nasal problems, though Beyonce was better than I expected. Pink was fine - she'd probably be great on a few future collaborations. The song is over too soon - maybe MTV showed an edited version. The usual lead up guitar was missing after the 3rd verse and there wasn't as much guitar as I'd hoped for - basically the ad was 3 minutes and the song about 2.30 The worst thing though was that Brian and Roger were only in it for one scene lasting 1 second. What a shame Brian either didn't or wasn't able to burst into shot with a "roman mock-up" guitar and play the solo omn screen for a few seconds with the odd intercut back. Hey, what can I say? I'm a Queen fan and I want to see my fave band on the Telly! let's hope there's a longer edit, and one with a bit more of B & R in it coming to a DVD single soon... |
Adam Baboolal 26.01.2004 18:43 |
Finally. Someone who has actually seen it. I missed it unfortunately. But I'm sure brianmay.com will list times when it's on. Peace, Adam. |
sully5059 26.01.2004 18:58 |
I recorded it because I was watching something else. MTV keeps putting a little interactive icon on screen and even when you press the button to remove it, it re-appears later on so my recording has that on screen during the first part (but I was randomly pressing the button to remove it at around quarter past and happened to remove it after 20 seconds). The ad's 3 minutes long (with the singing starting after just over a minute into it) - probably the full version because we are talking about an advert and they're usually a lot shorter than that. It's definitely suited to the cinema. As commented in the "Corporate whores" topic, I didn't think it was the epic that it was made out to be...though I think that may be because my imagination was making me think of sword fighting, etc. But I suppose it is pretty big as far as adverts are concerned. |
Penis - Vagina 26.01.2004 19:17 |
Hmm, if the interactive thing is anything like the ones we have on Dish Network, you should be able to shut them off completely, and they aren't really *there* as part of the image but rather are generated by your cable box (or satellite in my case) and will keep appearing when you watch the commercial unless you turn off that service. Dish Net. calls them 'TV enhancements'. I call them annoying and turned them off ;) Edit- If you recorded to VCR, then they are there, sorry, I wasn't thinking. My satellite box digitally records stuff like a Tivo so I've put the old VCR away in a box somewhere. hehe |
Mr Mercury 26.01.2004 19:49 |
"let's hope there's a longer edit, and one with a bit more of B & R in it coming to a DVD single soon..." I'm pretty sure that was the long edit from the 3 versions that were cut. Like you said it was probably more suited to the cinema, as like I said in the "Corporate Whores" thread, it wasnt quite the epic that I thought it would be. |

As with the rest of the b(r)and's current activities it leaves me completely cold - I don't know why people are up in arms/surprised or excited/appalled by it. 'Queen' have been activily persuing the 'Yoof' market ever since they teamed up with 5ive - seems they are succeeding in winning over their new target market. A market which will be more open to compilations and B&R touring under the name Queen. Easy money.... |
Pim Derks 27.01.2004 02:53 |
My expectations weren't high - but I hoped RT&BM would have a funny cameo. Needless to say, the second they appeared was over when I blinked my eyes. Musicwise it was crappy too - and I though the John Farnham version was bad! |
The Mir@cle 27.01.2004 03:08 |
"A market which will be more open to compilations and B&R touring under the name Queen. Easy money...." Do you really think Brian and Roger do this to earn money? They already can swim in money if they want. I think they just love to make music. It's a part of their lifes. And MTV... I don't watch that channel anymore. With the compilation of the 46664 they just cut out all the Queen numbers. A music channel who have no respect for worlds greatest rockband deserves no viewers. |
ogre t raylot 27.01.2004 03:21 |
"Do you really think Brian and Roger do this to earn money? They already can swim in money if they want. I think they just love to make music. It's a part of their lifes. " Yes - If they did it for music alone, they would pursue their solo career - as they did in the wake of Freddie's death proclaiming 'Queen is no more' - only when they realised that no-one wants to hear their solo stuff (outside the Queen fan base) did they return to exploit the brand name they created. Nice work if you can get it - Especially with an 'Yoof' market that's so easily manipulated into buying any old tosh. Been watching Hammersmith '75 and Milton Keynes quite a lot recently, still makes your hair stand on end even after all this time. They'll never be able to recapture that so It's GOT to be money they are after. |
Mr. Scully 27.01.2004 03:27 |
Crap. The Sonwriter's Hall Of Fame version was (despite Brian's cock-up) VERY promising and showing new directions but then they returned back to the ordinary version which we can hear everywhere now. Another wasted opportunity. |
doggy 27.01.2004 06:51 |
I quite liked the John Farnham version. It's just a shame that there isn't an edit with Fred singing it, though I'm sure they could create one. the only thing with the JF version is, again, it wasn't long enough! I've actually got to the stage where I love to hear Rock You and also Roger singing GaGa - they should play these live forever. |
Pim Derks 27.01.2004 07:13 |
"I've actually got to the stage where I love to hear Rock You and also Roger singing GaGa - they should play these live forever" Indeed - they should. But NOT as the ONLY tracks they perform. |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 27.01.2004 07:17 |
Scully, I totally agree with your point about the Songwriter's Hall of Fame Version. Didn't anybody tell that to Brian? Jee. What a "lost oportunity"! As for the Pepsi ad, I haven't seen it yet, as my ISP left without internet for the last days, and I'm at work now. :( Cheers, Ogre- |
Penetration_Guru 27.01.2004 07:31 |
A successful advert. Entertains and builds (slightly) brand awareness. Not sure that Beyonce suits WWRY - I've not heard so many extra syllables since Will Young did WATC. Other than that, watchable. Oh, and Roger often does that with his mouth. It's involuntary. Watch Montreal Timpani solo for proof. |
Future Manager 27.01.2004 08:38 |

Rien 27.01.2004 10:19 |
I must say I expected something more powerful and surprising. Brian talks about the computer-created images, well that would be the audience and the theatre I guess. Not very spectacular from what I've seen. I thought it would have more like Lord Of The Rings -type of animation in it. It didn't surprise me and it has no stunning climax. I hope there's a longer version. Indeed with some more Brian on guitar and Roger in it, but the Pepsi site basically talks about the three girls in the ad. The excitement of the audience should've been built up more. Little is happening in my view. At least they should make special WWRY Pepsi bottles or cans (or how you call them) that would perhaps lead to bigger sales of this drink (that I personally don't like to drink). Well... perhaps there's more coming. Oh, and I have no problem with Brian and Roger doing this for the money and to get more attention for the WWRY song or musical. Some people complain about them not being creative anymore. Well, they've been creative at the highest level for over 20 years. Imagine you would have created something or a name (Queen) in 20 years that can provide you a large income for the rest of your life. Wouldn't you feel great? They've invested during those years so what's wrong with "cashing it" in the way they want. It's up to them, not us. |
Ozz 27.01.2004 10:35 |
actually, i liked it... the first seconds were difficult to see, strange feelings...But if you let out the names and the pop stigma... sounds really good... At least pink did a great job.... i would like the complete uncut end with iglesias been eated by the lions...ho ho Well this ad is a great way to bring up queen to the news again... dare for more! |
Mr. Teatime 27.01.2004 11:02 |
seems to me the ad is to build awareness for the musical in america, in much the same way Brian and Roger started doing shows like Parkinson over here. With the side effect that they seem to enjoy playing together again, which may start them doing some form of tour (though Brian is always putting it off so it's not that likely). |
Saffron Caribou 27.01.2004 19:12 |

Using an old song shows the lack of originality to make an advert. |
rhapsody__87 28.01.2004 08:08 |
would it be completely wrong to say that i got very nauseous watching the commercial... and watching britney spears senselessly murder 'we will rock you' all while sounding like a dying mouse? |

FairyQueen 28.01.2004 11:17 |
I thought the commercial was stupid...the commercial actually achieved something I've never seen before...it's possible to screw up a song more ways than one...gee..how many remakes can we make of a song???...I think Brian and Roger are trying too hard to appeal to the younger crowd when they don't have to....*sigh*......I'm surprised Freddie won't rise from the ashes and be reincarnated to kick their asses....Now I see why John Deacon left.... |
NoOneButYou1975 28.01.2004 11:58 |

What a relief they won't be showing the ad in America. If the plot of the WWRY musical is about a rebellion against prepackaged pop, why bother with Pepsi in the first place? Is money really that important, after such a long and successful career? |
Saffron Caribou 30.01.2004 23:03 |
Well I saw it, not too impressive. Just poppyness fodder for soft drinks. 7Innuendo7, supposedly the plot of the musical is similar to Rush's 2112 concept album, and a bit similar to Styx's Mr Roboto venture. Thank goodness that the ad isnt going to air. However, I can bet that it will be featured in your local cinemas. I remember that in some local cinemas here, the ad that Becks and the Sumoes did for the World Cup did for Pepsi still airs. Quite a funny one actually. |
sully5059 03.02.2004 07:26 |
The edited version was in ITV last night. The intro is shorter, they come out and drop their weapons, Pink shouts and then they begin the final chorus, which sounded different. I'm not quite sure why - I had a feeling the guitar sounded different, or it was at least easier to hear it in this version. Not quite sure how long it lasted as I didn't time it, probably somewhere between 30 seconds and a minute. Also, Brian and Roger don't appear in this version. |
shimrod 03.02.2004 07:33 |
i thought it was a bit of fun. it was good to dee the interviews with Beyonce and especially Pink saying how much they loved Queen. not sure what the fuss is about as this is the fourth queen song i've heard in an ad in the last couple of years. |
Hitman 03.02.2004 07:54 |
even in italy they use Queen songs in advertisement. But in general they use the original versions. Now they are using CLTCL for some morning biscuits ;) but some months ago there was somebody to love for othe morning breakfasts (the spot began with "each morning i get up and die a little...." some time ago "let me live" for other food, but also innuendo (the "you can be anything..." part) for ballantine drink, the we are the champions (not original version) for T-shirt from "champions" and many manyother advertisements |
Kenneth E. Sandvær 03.02.2004 07:57 |
Last night I was watching "Store studio"(large studio) at NRK1. In the beginning of the show they talked about this version of WWRY and showed something from an interview with Brian and Roger. Brian started to talk about the song and Roger seems fine, but after just a few seconds he takes both his hands over his face and almost seems to be crying! And back in studio they say "Now they have the song is finaly dead, and Queen did it themself" "Freddie must be saying #1¤#!?"#"!£!$!!" Maybe it is time to move on and do some new stuff or at least stop re-recoring old songs every month |
Steph 03.02.2004 12:01 |

shimrod 04.02.2004 09:32 |
it was actually a 1/2 hour special screened on Fox8 in Australia and i'm not sure if can remember everything. Pink said that she had been a Queen fan forever and that it was surreal and a trip being in a studio with Brian and Roger. Beyonce describes how she spoke to the guys on the phone and how exited she was to be working with such a legendary act. she also says she would love to work with them again. Enrique describes himself as a huge queen fan and that he feels that Freddie was the best pop vocalist ever. that's about all i can remember |
rhapsody__87 04.02.2004 10:38 |
< I never exactly thought Freddie was a pop vocalist, per se... I just thought he was the best vocalist ever. Wouldn't a pop vocalist be someone like Beyonce (ew) or Britney (ugh)? That commercial was horrendous. I almost threw up my dinner when I heard Brithey. And Pink SHOUTING WWRY? No... not cool at all! :( |
Mrs.Taylor 06.02.2004 17:29 |
Apparently it was premiered during 'I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here' but nothing - not even Roger Taylor in a toga - would get me to watch that pile of shite just for the sake of catching an ad. And I don't even drink Pepsi! |
Kuku 10.02.2004 02:26 |
The ad made me laugh a little... and literally turn the volume down when the girls started singing... and laugh so hard for 2 seconds in the Rog&Bri cameo scene... That 2 seconds was the best moment of the ad. |

does anybody have a link for download/watch the ad? The one in the beggining of the thread is not working. |
Rien 10.02.2004 13:27 |
The mpg file is on my site. See Download, video. |
Sonja 10.02.2004 13:36 |
I have just seen it. Thanks Rien! My opinion: it sucks! 1. why Enrique Iglesias? 2. What does it all have to do with Pepsi 3. Most of all: in a Pepsi ad, the beverage should be the main point in the ad but this looks like an ad for Brit, Pink and Beyonce and the song 4. Why always use WWRY, as if Queen didn't have other great songs that could be used in an ad 5. Britney's singing sucks, not the right song for her No, I didn't like it at all, sorry. Pepsi has nothing to do with Gladiators and stuff like that, Pink, Brit and Beyonce have nothing to do with Queen and Enrique Iglesias even less. And Brian and Roger appearing in it doesn't make it any better. But it's up to them, if they had fun doing it, then it's all fine. I just don't see the point. |
inu-liger 10.02.2004 13:48 |
My sisters like it. They don't like Queen, really, but they like it since it has some of their favourite singers on it (the three women) |
Adam Baboolal 10.02.2004 15:24 |
"Why always use WWRY" Maybe because it's one of the most recognised and popular songs in the world? Sonja, I should've stopped reading your post after it said, "it sucks" cause anything after that was just going to be a dig. Why write about all the things you didn't like when you already said, "it sucks"? Peace, Adam. Now... perhaps the obligatory good remark..? |
Sonja 10.02.2004 15:52 |
Adam, I just wanted to give some reasons WHY I think it's bad. I know that WWRY is one of the most recognized songs in the world but why use it over and over again? WWRY is a good and strong song but there are better ones in my opinion. I just don't like the whole thing, sorry. |
Rien 10.02.2004 16:11 |
Well Sonja, your not alone in this. I don't like the ad either. My expectations were just too high on forehand I guess. The video starts out really great with the three girls starting the "boom-boom-clap" noise with their swords. Again great expections of what could follow. Then they walk into the arena, throw away their gear and to me that's it. After this there's no tension built up, no surprise (besides Brian and Roger in the audience), and not a really funny development in the story. As one mentioned earlier... imagine a huge portrait of Freddie or his statue... It would be more Queenlike if that one lion would transform into Brian May who starts playing his Red Special and e.g. a sculpture would transform into Roger Taylor and (here we go again I know I know) a portrait of John Deacon would slightly move his face or give us a wink. And Freddie's statue would be holding a can of Pepsi in it's hand(believe me I don't drink Pepsi but it's just the case that it's a Pepsi ad!) Just to honour Queen in the right way. It just could have been so much more impressive. The way they turned the original stage into an Arena was done very well however - you know if you've seen the original pics on the Pepsi site. And WWRY - the song... It's just great for these kind of things. |
Saint Jiub 11.02.2004 00:10 |
It would have been better if a boob fell out of a costume to replace the 1.5 seconds of those two old geezers. |
Sonja 11.02.2004 11:45 |
Rien, I agree. I mean, they use a Queen song, Brian and Roger appear in the spot and then Enrique and the 3 girls. It's a strange mixture of totally different things. It just doesn't fit. |
