The miracle mother love (live version) I want to break hammers Kensington stall (unreleased vocal demonstration) You're mother is tied down We will rock you (I think they did a legit job at the gig, they engaged everybody well and played the hits with HTF (current okay song that's rhythm seems to simulate blaring alarms : another great embellishment of the concept within the art) ....i don't think they missed anything for an upbeat DAYTIME performance. certainly couldn't pull any others from THE GAME/HOT SPACE/THE WORKS that would've suited the time frame and pace without adding more arcs than necessary in the lifts and pulls BoRhap was clear to turn heads for any drunken "ruffians" who were not paying attention, the rest was a fun arc. They did great condensation ***CONDENSING |

I can understand Hammer To Fall being in there as the latest single, but perhaps it might have vied with I Want To Break Free or Another One Bites The Dust for a spot? (Although, with the subject matter of Live Aid/Band Aid in mind, A song called 'Another One Bites the Dust' would have been seen as wholly inappropriate). They pretty much got it bang on. |

I think the set they played was the best they could've played. Obviously they had to play Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Ga Ga, We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions - big global hits which are very popular live too. Crazy Little Thing Called Love again like the others is an obvious song to play because it was massive globally and a fun one to play live. Hammer To Fall seems the most odd song they played but they needed a "rock" song, this at the time was their best well-known heavy song, probably down to the reason that it was a fairly new song. Another One Bites The Dust is the worst they could've played at the event despite it being their biggest selling single. Again, I Want To Break Free would seem a little bit wrong in the context. Under Pressure would've been too good to be played in Queen's set, I reckon it would've been played in the finale. I think the reason why it wasn't played is that David Bowie wasn't a fan of the song, in fact I don't think he played it until the 90s. Love Of My Life would've been a nice one to play with the audience singing along but remember this would've been an audience of people who on the whole won't have been big Queen fans. Somebody To Love and Killer Queen are other big songs they could've played but seeing that they were played in a medley during The Works Tour and were dropped at the end of it probably meant that the band were less willing to play those songs. |

It's hard to think of an alternative to HTF. It's certainly the odd man out but thematically and tempo-wise, why not. If they threw it in as a 'safe' choice that they knew they'd nail it's ironic it's the song with the most fluffs. |

Wow.. widely regarded as the greatest live performance of all time and someone has just asked what would you have done differently :/ If Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't on A Night At The Opera which Chas and Dave song would you choose? |
mooghead 14.06.2019 20:12 |
(The answer is obviously 'Rabbit' but you know what I mean) |
Metropolis 14.06.2019 20:51 |
FYI the reason I asked this question was because they chose to include Hammer To Fall and I found that odd since they had many other songs that are ARGUABLY better. |
Metropolis 14.06.2019 21:02 |
Hammer To Fall is actually one of my favorite Queen songs, and I think Queen's Live Aid set was amazing, but I was curious to see what other people thought |
mooghead 14.06.2019 21:03 |
Right.. didn't see that in your post.. which was blank.. What would you choose? I think it went quite well. |
Metropolis 14.06.2019 21:33 |
I would add in the hard rock part from Bo Rhap, maybe a more complete version of we will rock you, because I felt like these two songs ended a bit abruptly. I know they had to cut them for the time limit, but the hard rock section of Bohemian Rhapsody was really great. Maybe lead into RGG with the piano conclusion of BoRhap? Still, they were amazing already. |
Holly2003 14.06.2019 23:26 |
They could have been brave and thrown in Masters of War instead of HTF. It would be nice to contrast Roger's lyrics in Radio Ga Ga, with their hard-hitting cultural criticism, with Dylan's more modest efforts ... |
OhioMustapha 15.06.2019 01:52 |
I know that like no one is gonna agree with me here, but i imagined that they would play more slower and sad songs given the gig. Also im back for the first time since march 2018. Bohemian Rhapsody Under Pressure (Play with david since he is at live aid) Spread Your Wings Long Away Radio Ga Ga (The part when the audience clap there hands is just so cool and iconic so I would want that) Life Is Real Extra Song at night: Love Of My Life |
Jimmy Dean 15.06.2019 04:43 |
The only substitution could be Another One Bites The Dust in place of Hammer To Fall. I don't think it would have been inappropriate. Weird Al performing Eat It would have been inappropriate. |
Metropolis 15.06.2019 05:37 |
Under Pressure would have actually been pretty good. David Bowie was there, and the lyrics fit the context of Live Aid. Don't know why David didn't like the song, it was a pretty great song |
dysan 15.06.2019 06:22 |
He did like the song. His accountant told him so. He just believed it could be better. Which is ironic as when he started playing live versions in the 90s they were pretty poor. |
matt z 15.06.2019 15:37 |
^the live versions from Bowie are essentially thanks to newly (then) acquired bassist Gail Ann Dorsey who was a huge Queen fan (and was at a time, rumoured to fill in John's spot during the Q+ phase) Seems like both parties feel that it never reached it's peak and to them it must still feel like a "demo". But the public at large knows it as is; and that's possibly a reason it still hasn't been altered. Also, it's kinda too late to get David or Freddie's input on a session again |
Holly2003 15.06.2019 16:00 |
Queen played Under Pressure throughout The Works tour so it clearly didn't feel like a demo to them. Brian probably pushed for HTF to be on the set and while I think UP would've been better, it's hard to argue that HTF was the wrong choice. As mentioned previously, it was the latest single, it's a mid-tempo rocker, and it keeps Brian happy by having 2 of his songs on the setlist. A more democratic choice, to give Deaky some representation, would've been If You Can't Beat Them, which is a great live rocker, or Need Your Loving Tonight. But again, it's hard to argue against HTF. Incidentally, in this thread I asked why Queen and Bowie didn't play together at Live Aid. link |
Fly away 15.06.2019 16:15 |
I agree regarding HTF that they needed a heavier song and that was probably the most broadly recognized at the time. Plus, we get to see Freddie wanking off the mic stand in front of a billion people! |

Tie your mother down would have been a good song to play at live aid. |
dysan 15.06.2019 20:45 |
Queen took the playing UP straight away because it was a hit. That's the sort of band they are. I don't think AOBTD was even considered for the stage show until it became a (largely unexpected) hit. HTF seems to be the right 'rocker' to play - but no mention of Save Me. That would've fit nicely. |
dysan 15.06.2019 20:47 |
But again - wasn't featured on The Works tour so probably not in contention to begin with. |
Metropolis 15.06.2019 23:39 |
HTF is a great song for live performances, but Queen did have bigger hits that could have been played instead. Still IMO the Live Aid set was already amazing as it was. |

Basically, it was the last 6 songs or so that they had played during the 84/85 tours... If you check the setlists it's about the same. Also, by and large, the same "last " 6 songs played on the Magic Tour. It wasn't quite as "clever" as anyone would have us believe. |

Great to hear Freddie sing those songs fresh having not played the rest of the set first. His power and energy...well you know the rest. |

David Bowie was there, Under Pressure with David would've been awesome. |
MisterCosmicc 22.06.2019 20:24 |
Hammer To Fall had lyrics that generation could relate to, plus it scorched the audience. They needed a loud guitar driven song. Queen is about being diverse. The occasion showed off different styles they could do. Not the same track over and over. Can you imagine them performing Fat Bottomed Girls, Tie Your Mother Down, or Put Out The Fire in Hammer To Fall’s place for the occasion? Neither can I. Another One Bites The Dust? Oh my God, it appears people on here forgot what Live Aid was about. |
miraclesteinway 23.06.2019 23:24 |
I think they could have ditched the Mercury and May slot, and had Queen and Bowie doing under pressure instead. But they didn't. Anyway it was a good show they pulled off in both slots. |
