10 best deep cuts

link An excellent article. Not sure if it's the exact same ten tracks I would've chosen, but this is great music journalism. |

Great article. Nice to see an article where the writer actually gives their choices some thought, has taken the time to actually dig and hasn't just plumped for the obvious. Like you, I don't think this would be my exact top 10 deep cuts, but it's a refreshing read nonetheless. I think my ten picks would be (I had actually rattled off 20, covering each album, and whittled it down to 10. It was a tough choice eliminating the others and on another day, it could have gone another way!!): Great King Rat The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke The March Of The Black Queen Flick Of The Wrist In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited Death On Two Legs Long Away Who Needs You Coming Soon Mother Love These are obviously in chronological order. I don't think I can rank them in a particular order, other than MOTBQ is #1. |

Ones I cut included White Queen, You & I, All Dead All Dead and Cool Cat. I toyed over the idea of Rock It....but I actually prefer the live versions with Freddie on lead over the album version (which is still fun, btw). |

When listening to day at the races... how do you highlight white man over millionaire waltz and long away? Kudos for mentioning Dancer, mind you. It may be queen’s deepest track after Cool Cat. But Staying Power? No? Anyways, it’s nice to see someone talking about Queen that is not GH1, GH2 or ANATO. |

Yes It's all dependant on an individual's experience and nostalgia. |

The 70s tracks are less known as the 80s ones because there weren't as many singles released in the 70s compared to the 80s. I had more than ten so I'm eliminating songs I like... My Fairy King White Queen (As It Began) The March Of The Black Queen In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited '39 Long Away You And I Drowse Spread Your Wings (not a hit because it wasn't well promoted) If You Can't Beat Them The eleventh song would be Doing All Right, followed by Liar. If the debut album and the second album were recorded in the same quality as Sheer Heart Attack or A Night At The Opera a lot more songs will probably rank higher as I really do like most of the songs on those two albums. |

^ You had ones I had to take out to make my 10 ;) |

Good set list but would delete "Mother Love" as its just too sad to listen too. I would replace that with "Sweet Lady" |
| Thistle 08.12.2018 16:17 |
You big softy ;) But yes, I agree, very sad to listen to. Always gets me. It's very difficult to do a "top ten" when you're so invested in a band and love pretty much all of their output. "Sweet Lady" is one of the rare ones that does little for me, but if you see the quality of the ones I had to omit, you'll understand just how difficult whittling it down was. |

Others worth consideration are Dead on time, If you cant beat them, Father to Son, Soul Brother, Ogre Battle. |

I think my ten deep cuts would be 1 - Doing All Right; 2 - Father To Son; 3 - Dear Friends; 4 - You and I; 5 - Coming Soon; 6 - The Hero; 7 - Cool Cat; 8 - Keep Passing The Open Windows; 9 - Was It All Worth It; 10 - Ride The Wild Wind Like a few of you here, I couldn't organise or rank them into preference |

What's a "deep cut" here? I like Spread Your Wings as much as Holly, but it was a UK single.... Genuine question |

Penetration_Guru wrote: What's a "deep cut" here? I like Spread Your Wings as much as Holly, but it was a UK single.... Genuine questionA song that wasn't a hit - Queen didn't include Tie Your Mother Down or Spread Your Wings on their first greatest hits album because neither was a top 20 hit. |

I reckon that if it was out as a single (top 20 or not, it's still a well known track), it's not a "deep cut". I'd say B-sides are acceptable, especially when the "hit" really overshadows it. I don't see any specific "rules" though, as it were. |

As much as I love Spread Your Wings (it's my favourite Queen song), it's technically not a deep cut because as others have pointed out, it did receive a single release. Here's my top 10, which excludes any UK single releases and I've reluctantly limited the list to one song per album - could have easily chosen a few songs off Queen II! Flick Of The Wrist Long Away Fairy Feller's Master Stroke The Prophet's Song Was It All Worth It Ride The Wild Wind The Night Comes Down The Hero Jealousy Made In Heaven (not a Queen single) |
| TomP63 09.12.2018 22:34 |
Sorry nothing to read in the previous post. But here are the ones I consider Deep Cuts, and Musucfan15 fantastic list, you are a true music fan! My Fairy King White Queen Lily of the Valley The Prophet's Song You and I Spread your wings, another Deacy gem, sorry I can't resist Dead on Time Sail Away Sweet Sister Life is real Keep passing the open windows Was it all worth it All God's people Tom |

I think a deep cut is an album track that didn't get released as a single so isn't well known. But I took advantage if the lack of rules to include it as it wasn't a hit ( I think it was top 30). Technically, Princes was also a CD single back in the early noughties but aside from its use as the Highlander tv series theme song it isn't that well known. They both rock. |

I started listening to Queen on ANATO/ADATR double cassette and it's strange that nobody mentioned Good Old-Fashioned Loverboy as for other 9: Tenement Funster Fairy Feller's Master Stroke White Queen Seaside Rendezvous It's Late Jealousy Machines My life has been saved Don't try so hard Let me live |
