Today Peter Hince was on The One Show. It showed him talking about his time with Queen. It was a really good feature. The One Show had Rod Stewart on the show and he told the presenters about the band he was going to form with Freddie and Elton John (Nose, Hair and Teeth) and one or two other things. The link: link It started about 19 minutes. |

Really great seeing Rod Stewart say a few kind words about our Freddie, and Peter Hince appreciating Freddie and the band when he was employed by Queen. Great item on the "One Show" |

Hopefully this puts an end to that "Freddie was an Iranian" nonsense. It's good to hear Rod say kind things about Fred. Previously when talking about Fred he's always been a bit of an ass, but this is respectful and kind. ps Hince is the roadie Brian was so uncharitable about when he heard about his book being released. link |

I probably should've been clearer. What I meant was that Rod had opportunities while Fred was alive to talk about Fred the musician, composer, singer etc., and he didn't do that (to my knowledge). He wasn't the only one: check out the Magic Years tapes -- a few big stars had the chance to say something about the above, but instead chose to take the piss. Phil Collins was probably the worst. It's a bit of a sore point for me. There was and is too little talk about Fred's musical skills and far too much talk about him being a "front man". (Or in the Magic Years, stupid jokes about him being gay). In my view, when Fred moved away from the piano to the centre of the stage to become the legendary "front man" that he genuinely was, Queen also lost something. It was a trade off between showmanship and musicality. But what it also did was distract critics and some fans from Fred's musical talent. |

Holly: Yeah your right, on The Magic year tape many artists did take the piss like Divine calling the band "Kiss" the he says "oh well Kiss Queen there all the same" And Phil Collins was rude laughing saying " Theres not too many people like Freddie" (ha ha ha) very disrespectful. |

I actually thought the Magic Years piss taking was fun. As it should be. Paying off Ringo Starr to give a compliment was pretty funny. It showed a self deprecating humour far removed from the reverence and pandering the band would seek these days. |

Even the late Mel Smith was cheeky on The Magic Years video by saying They was rumours that they were all homosexuals (wink wink to camera) Back in those days that was pretty outrageous for the viewers watching with there families! |

But what it also did was distract critics and some fans from Fred's musical talent."One of the things the Torpedo twins" seemed to be known for was editing and particularly in interviews it coulld give very much the wrong impression. Almost all the interviews in The Magic Years were used almost out of context and certainly not in a flowing conversational way. I agree a lot of what was said didn't appear to be kind, but I think there was a sense of humour and lightheartedness that somehow missed the mark in some places. I think we also should remember that The Magic Years was put together with the band's blessing and anything they felt shouldn't be in it wouldn't have made the final cut. Freddie's musicianship was always balanced with his ability to front the band, I think the positioning of the piano gave the widest clearest stage space possible, so I think even Frddie was aware and willing to allow his talent as the front man be almost more important then playing in some ways. Your point is completely accurate though and I seem to remember Roger Taylor saying something similar. |

The Ringo Starr thing was from the Concert for kampuchea Special in 1979. Not specifically done for Magic years. The editing was always the worst thing about the torpedo twins. Remember the Rare Live video? Worst thing by them ever was making the 1984 Works interview with the line "youre the last Person i'm talking to so you get the best interview" sound like it was the last Interview of his life which it wasnt. It was the last interview of the day in 1984. |
Star* 05.10.2018 07:43 |
Runner70 Thanks for that post, i always assumed that last interview was Freddie saying goodbye to the fans and never realised it was from 1984. Thanks for pointing that out! |

They have to use what's available to make an interesting programme. You could say pretty much 100% of what we see on screen in deception one way or another. The magic goes once you see behind the curtain. Watch the angel, not the string. I thought the tone of The Magic Years was exactly right - very English humour, and very Queen. |
