So, Brian believes not casting a white singer in a black role is a form of racism, eh? Dear Brian. I am creating a musical about a herd of cattle. They are cows. Should I cast a badger in one of the roles so as not to appear to discriminate against our TB riddled friends? What a fucking idiot this bloke is. Maybe they should have cast a bald, black drummer in his role in the upcoming Queen movie to placate him eh? |
on my way up 15.08.2018 11:55 |
Please read again what Brian writes. It's not about casting, it's about someone NOT allowing to perform a song because of that person being white. Brian is far from an idiot. Please enhance your reading skills before ranting yourself. |

Agreed, a song is a song, and is not solely determined by race. I have had students sing this song with as much character and emotion as any other. The emotions are universal. |

on my way up, re: >It's not about casting, it's about someone NOT allowing to perform a song because of that person being white. If allowing someone to sing a part is not casting them in the role of a singer, then what is it, pray tell? Cruela de Vil, re: >Agreed, a song is a song, and is not solely determined by race. Bollocks. A song is NOT *JUST* a song. Can you imagine "Little Girl Blue" sung by anyone other than a woman; is it sexist to expect a woman only to sing it? Or "Exodous" by anyone other than someone affected by Colonial rule? |

Maybe they should have cast a bald, black drummer in his role in the upcoming Queen movie to placate him eh?This is what Brian May wrote on instagram: "brianmayforrealShould Mazz be refused permission to sing a song – because she's white ? It seems that some theatre impresarios, out of fear of being branded discriminatory to artists of colour, are making decisions that discriminate against white artists, which are being perceived by some as a unpleasant new kind of race-based injustice. This lady has been denied permission to sing a song at the Albert Hall, apparently for racial reasons. She's white and Jewish, and one of the most electrifying singers in Britain. Her name is Mazz Murray @mazzwoman, and Queen fans will remember her incredible 8 year run playing the part of Killer Queen in our musical We Will Rock You. She's currently starring in Chicago, the musical, in London's West End. Mazz was booked to headline a concert at the Albert Hall (Oct 8th) – the planned highlight being her outstanding performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”. This is a song featured in the successful musical Dreamgirls, currently at the Savoy Theatre, London. When the producers of the Albert Hall show asked for permission for Mazz to sing the song, they were told that Dreamgirls is an “African American Musical” and they did not think it appropriate for a non-BAME company to perform the songs from it. So Mazz has been denied permission to sing the song because she’s not black. Does anybody out there find this shocking ? Unjust ? As a writer of songs myself, I'd be horrified if any singer were denied the right to sing one of my songs because he/she was ‘from the wrong ethnic group’. Surely it’s insane that, while the musical Hamilton has been applauded for putting black artists on the stage to play famously white historical figures, and soon we will have a black Emily Pankhurst, this fabulous white singer is banned from singing an “African American” song in a concert ? What a strange world this is becoming. What think you, folks ? Do you think musicals should henceforth be identified with one ethnic group, and nobody who doesn’t belong to that group should be allowed to perform the songs ? Or should Mazz Murray be given the chance to perform this excellent torch song at the Albert Hall ? Photo: Darren Bell - Bri" |

dudeofqueen wrote: So, Brian believes not casting a white singer in a black role is a form of racism, eh?See my previous post and read again what Brian's 'rant' is about. Pay special attention to these words: "Mazz was booked to headline a concert at the Albert Hall (Oct 8th) – the planned highlight being her outstanding performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”. This is a song featured in the successful musical Dreamgirls, currently at the Savoy Theatre, London. As you can see, if you can read, this is NOT what you are saying: "not casting a white singer in a black role" If you still don't understand that Brian is completely right about what he is saying, I feel very sorry for your lack of intelligence. |

I agree with Brian ... Unfortunately, the liberally biased term, "cultural appropriation" has gained prominence lately. Bruno Mars has also received outlandish backlash for "cultural appropriation". Fortunately, some black artists back Bruno Mars. link |

Sorry DoQ, I agree with Brian on this one. Mazz is not being "cast" in anything - she would be performing as herself as part of a West End celebration (if I recall correctly). She wants to sing aforementioned song, and isn't being allowed to because it's from a "black" show and she isn't black. This is why Brian is irked. He's not saying "cast white people in black roles or you're racist". He's saying that music is for all. |
Makka 16.08.2018 02:05 |
Totally agree with Brian. He is 100% correct. The western world is going mad! |
matt z 16.08.2018 02:12 |
Bruno Mars IS blatantly stealing a whole style. The lead single name cHecks so many songs and artists associated with the style that it felt like a tribute bit damn near everything there is jacked from that era. As close to plagiarism as you can get (sampling later PAID dues ) but Brian's taking about a song that already exists yay others feel shouldn't be performed. Now if sam Smith sang TO BE YOUNG GIFTED AND AND BLACK or WE PEOPLE WHO ARE DARKER THAN BLUE there'd be something |

Not "a form" of racism, but clear racism. Your example has nothing to do with this case. If I understand the case correctly (if not, ignore this part), they didn't want to cast her in a role which was written to be black, but she was only planning to sing a song, which was previously sung by a black person. |

happystar wrote: Always said Brian has lost the plot, and Roger is not far behind.Only you could say this and not explain your thinking. I doubt you even read or understood Brian's original comments. Basically Mazz Murray has been told she can't sing a song at a concert because she is not black, because the song is from a show in which the character who sings the song is black. Far from losing the plot Brian is absolutely right, this I'd small minded and racist. Should white blues players and singers be stopped performing songs that were written by black song writers as the characters in the songs were probably black. Should Queen have ever played Big Spender and should every white guitar player stop playing Jimi Hendrix songs. A singer singing a song in a concert, mis very different to a singer/ actor taking a part in production that was written for a specific gender or race. As usual happystar's vast intellect is visible to all, his view is, a far more intelligent open minded and qualified person has lost the plot. Says it all really. |
