A discussion about No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young) After I tried searching this song here and had nothing pop up.. Unless it's my internet nothing has come up with No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young) guessing this song hasn't been discussed. Watching the TAODOL doco, I thought that they would touch on this song near the very end or play the video in full... As a bookend for Queen as in, Brian, John and Roger and in memory of Freddie for that doco. But they never did touch on it at all nor did the song have any reference in a basic tune for the doco. Apart from the nice wee doco of the time when they did this song, it seems like its a song that has never been touched on since then. How does this song rank on this forum and has the band ever discussed this outside of that doco during the making of the video.. Was it a sore point in the band (Paul Rodgers was never brought up...) hard effort in getting John to record this etc..? I find this song quite intriguing.. For those of whom, grew up with Queen through the 70s and 80s, when this song was first released. Was this song a teasing insight into what else was in the pipe line/in the near future, for Queen as a three piece and what could have been. Or was it seen as just a song that was year or so too late, just a song that should have been a bookend for MIH than track 13? Also. How did it compare as a song amoungst the acts that were releasing songs in 97 when it was released? Was it just a sore reminder for those Queen fans at the time about where they could have been (lets take out the potential break up we often talk about if Freddie hadn't had...) |

I believe it was Brian's song. He decided to get Roger and John involved in stead of making it a solo effort. They also had a one-off live performance with Elton John ("Show must go on"). I think the guys had one more go, but for reasons unknown it didn't work. John retired, Roger and Brian continued their solo careers in '98 (electric fire album/ Red special EP and tours) and rejoined later for "Queen+" collaborations. |

It's worth noting that the potential post Freddie band was actually spearheaded by John and Roger. Brian got involved and John left. Coincidence? The balance shifted and for whatever reason it didn't work for John. Good on him I say. |

Ivo-1976 I read that from wiki... was the Elton John thing before or after the recording? Dysan That whole MIN behind the scenes and Brian's involvement and John's withdrawal and after OTGDY song release John's retirement.... gets all of those theories going about a bust up during MIH and Freddie John's relationship/alignment getting away with songs song writing credits etc....... |

BTW there is a documentary coming about this whole ballet thing. It'll be shown at Freddie's Birthday Party - link No One But You was written in November 96 but when three of them decided to record this song as a Queen song it was August 97 (probably) and the video was on October - November 1997 (29th November according to wikipedia). John was willing to work in 1997 but when Brian started to collaborate under the name of Queen with 5ive, Wyclef Jean, Robbie Williams after his solo tour in 1998 John got furious at him and it was over. That's what I think. |

John never really liked the limelight and I don't think he was comfortable with where Queen were heading, with Brian fronting what is basically a "Brand" with a lot of myth attached. For me, no one but you is a lovely end to the whole Queen story and I don't really consider anything after to be Queen. |

I bet he said he wrote the song that day —during the unveiling of the statue? on a rainy day? ummm... weird...— as a another trick to sell more books ;) |

I do remember pictures of the unveiling and it was rainy that day...and I seem to remember Brian being asked of it was specifically about Princess Diana and he said something to the effect of, "It's about everyone we've lost, and there's a lot of Freddie in there." It's been years since I've read that quote, however. |

I'm sad John left, but I can't imagine him playing bass for Q+AL. A part of me could have seen it for Q+PR. |

Also I found this quote by Brian from 97 "I wrote the song about Freddie. It also kind of is about a lot of other people as well... Most of it was written when we unveiled the statue to him, which stands at the end of Lake Geneva, in Switzerland. But little bits of inspiration came at other times too" Now the lyrics - "A hand above the water/An angel reaching for the sky/Is it raining in heaven/Do you want us to cry". It fits perfectly with the statue. Putting this all together I'm 96% sure it was written in 96 :) |
