Sikke has posted a couple new clips: The Prophet's Song - link Love Of My Life - link The former is an interesting listen to a working version of the backing track. The Red Special actually sounds like it's in rough shape, as the low D string can't stay in tune. You can faintly hear Roger counting in at 2:54, the exit from the (clearly as of yet unrecorded) choir section. And it's fascinating to hear the tape stretch bit at 3:47 isolated, as the two sections would later be consolidated. And of course, to hear the piano of LOML is a gorgeous listen. The man sure was a master of his craft, and here he is in the office at his creative peak and most focused. But the fact that the bass is there suggests this may well be from one of the ANATO DVD-As, and not an actual studio outtake. Deacon's bass part is just as lovely as the piano part, and without the vocal there are actually a few little nuances that couldn't really be heard. Two thumbs up. |
brians wig 05.01.2016 15:09 |
The piano by itself isn't from the 2002 surround release of ANATO and it ost certainly isn't from that 2006 abortion that's seems to me to be more of a surround upmix than a proper remix from the multis. As for the original 2001 version, well I haven't ripped the individual channels on that yet, but i seriously doubt it's from that either. I think Sikke's come good with these and I hope he publishes more! |

Sikke's the man when it comes to unheard material. Remember the Las Palabras De Amor rejected demo, not the one that is circulating for years, or a Sheer Heart Attack demo version. He has a treasure chest up there and every now and then he opens it up for us with some nice material that has never been heard before. Thanks Sikke! |

Thanks Sikke! This is greatly appreciated. |

"Interesting" is the understatement of the year. This is incredible! One of my favourite details in The Prophet's Song is how it suddenly goes major at 3:58 in this video as a little variation, and it's so audible in this mix. Love Of My Life is such an underrated song. Everybody go on about the live version being so brilliant, but the studio version is a flawless, magnificent piece of music. The perfectionism and attention to detail is what I think makes Queen stand out as the best of the classic rock bands. |

This couldn't be used as extra's on the 2011 re-issues, or for that matter on the 30 anniversary editon of A Night At The Opera? It still freaks me out, that QP or anybody related to QP, for instance Greg Brooks keep on saying, there is no vault. But if there is thing what could be a vault, it is clear empty.... Thank you Bob and Sikke, I really, really enjoyed this! Tom |
Hangman_96 05.01.2016 17:50 |
I was just wishing the other day there were an isolated piano track of LOML, and now here it is. Many thanks to Sikke for uploading and to Bob for posting it here. |
GAP 05.01.2016 18:16 |
Simply it is amazing my Sikke friend. Thanks for both songs. |

But if there is thing what could be a vault, it is clear empty....It seems that QP usually can't be bothered to investigate what classic rock fans enjoy in the 21st century. Rainbow was a step in the right direction, but it appears they've taken a step backward again with Hammersmith. The new BBC documentary last month had a ton of footage that could've been used as extras, but they opted out (in the case of the new TOTP footage, I truly hope this wasn't simply a matter of them not wanting to pay the larger licensing fees for release). So here we are back at square one, wondering which QP will step up to the plate for their next release. A studio box set is long overdue. Without a doubt they have vaults with hundreds of hours of unheard music, and with the right marketing it could do amazingly well. But they just don't seem to be interested. It almost seems like it was pulling teeth to get a dozen new things (about one per album on average) onto the 2011 remasters, as the bonus tracks look more like a marketing scheme for the existing back catalog than a genuine attempt to reveal new things about their past. Including Wembley and Montreal songs on 5 song "bonus" EPs is almost insulting when there are outtakes of The Prophet's Song collecting dust. So - thanks Sikke for getting this one right. |

Wow!!! Many tks Sikke for opening your vault again and Bob for letting us know. Now this is the stuff I love the most. Studio material. And this is another proof for those unbelievers saying all over the years that there wasn't much material in the archives worth of an studio boxset/anthology. Every year several gems surface and I am sure that when/if the day arrives, we'll all be astonished of what we see included in those compillations. Once again, I don't expect QP to unleash dozens of rejected, completely finished and already mixed unheard songs ala Springsteen, but there must be dozens of unheard songs demoed and that is always a joy to discover (FM solo boxset anyone?). And as for backing tracks, alternative takes, mixes etc etc of well know songs... well, I am sure there must be a ton of those. As much as I enjoy any kind of live material, the studio stuff is what makes it for me, so I try to devour and enjoy every single second of any new share like these. Thanks again for sharing!! |

Thank you Bob and Sikke, I really, really enjoyed this! TomThey just don't want to put stuff out, unlike every other artist on the planet who now seem quite happy to release remastered albums with a second disc FULL of demos (not a paltry 5 tracks, most of which he had anyway). I'm not a McCartney fan, but I've seen what's in his deluxe editions. THAT is what Queen should have released in 2011. |
cmsdrums 06.01.2016 04:35 |
Frustrating to know that stuff like this exists, yet for the 2011 bonus stuff they actually went to the bother of creating new 'fake' mixes we didn't want or need just by dropping out certain channels (I'm In Love with My Car guitar and vocal version, Tie Your Mother Down and You're My Best Friend Instrumentals...) instead of using more stuff genuinely from the the time like the Sail Away Sweet Sister early version. |
Rick 06.01.2016 05:12 |
Thanks Bob and Sikke! Can we all agree that John was a great bass player? I love what he does in the LOML sample. |
Oscar J 06.01.2016 05:49 |
^ I don't think anyone has ever questioned that John was a great bassist. :) |
Cruella de Vil 06.01.2016 06:18 |
To me, it is in the ballades that John allows himself scope to speak more musically and individually. Especially his upper register lines, that float in counterpoint to the vocal melody. Iit wasn't always the earlier stuff either. Try the fade of Sail Away Sweet SIster and even the opening of It's a Beatiful Day share these same characteristics. As far as the harder stuff went, just listen to the live improvs of Father to Son and the verses of Flick of the Wrist where he bubbles away nicely. Again, thanks for a great share! CDV |

CDVAbsolutely..... Sail Away Sweet Sister, Jealousy, These Are The Days of Our Lives, Love of My Life, Teo Torriatte, Millionaire's Waltz, It's Late, We Are The Champions...... I could go on to list many more examples of his brilliance and individuality; even on the really early heavy stuff he was NEVER a 'plodder' or one to fill up the spaces with low end rumble or pointless root notes. Not underrated here but certainly so in the wider 'best' musos categories where speed and 'flashiness are given false prominence. |

I think this might be due to Brian's unusually thin strings + Drop D tuning. Picking the low D string too hard will then cause the note to go sharp. This effect can be heard in various live versions of Son And Daughter (though that doesn't even have drop D tuning). |

Just heard LOML. I always thought that John was a great bass-player, but WOW, this song shows his amazing skills so clearly. I heard something I never heard before, it's on 3m18s: some very soft and high notes he's playing there. Brilliant! Thnx Sikke for uploading and MAYniac91 for sending the files. |

Yes, as would I! Very much appreciated if you could find the time to do so. I'm actually more looking for Prophet's Song, and not really the LOML...but if they come together that's fine! I've included a version of LOML that I recorded about 12 years ago...... the idea was to accentuate the bass over the cheap/crappy piano part and chorus vox (to allow for time reference) It might make it a little easier for some to hear the subtleties of John's fantastic bass writing/playing?? link |
