as it says...name your FIVE favourite albums that you think are as good or better than queen's best.
1] Eagles - Hotel California
2] Cat Stevens - Teaser & The Firecat
3] Beatles - Abbey Rd
4] Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmos Factory
5] Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Queen's run of albums from Queen II to News of the World invites comparisons with the cream of that era's music, but from Hot Space onwards there are literally hundreds of better albums that what Queen was producing. With that in mind, here's a few from the post Queen1 and pre-Hot Space era:
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
ELO - Out of the Blue
Rush - Moving Pictures
Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell
David Bowie - Hunky Dory
Live albums: the usual classics like Unleashed in the East and Live and Dangerous are better than Livekillers.
Rush - 2112
Beatles - Revolver
Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue (well, no one said I had to limit it to rock :D)
This is hard. I was going to mention several artists who had creative arcs over 8-10 years before dipping but. ... this is only five.
As five it will be varied for taste.
1. Stevie Wonder : Innervisions
2. Stevie Wonder : Fullfillingness' First Finale
3. Alice Cooper : Love it to Death
4. Black Sabbath : Sabotage
5. Judas Priest : Sad Wings of Destiny
Now i feel horrible leaving out so many
1) The Beatles - The White Album
2) Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
3) Nirvana - Nevermind
4) Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II
5) Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced
5 albums isn't enough when it comes to choosing the best, but I can try.:
1. The Beatles - Rubber Soul
2. Pink Floyd - The Wall
3. The Who - Quadrophenia
4. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
5. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
1) Jethro Tull - Aqualung

2) Pink Flloyd - Wish You Were Here
4) Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
5) Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
nice shout Barb^^^
i shied away from listing beatles albums - but easily could have also
had the list been 20 albums better than Queen's best - i'd have definitely included 6 beatles albums
Here we go, five albums, absolute my favourites and worth a listen. Pity it is only a list of five:
No particulary order:
1. Grand Funk Railroad - Grand Funk (the Red album)
2. John Waite - Figure in a Landscape
3. Thunder - Behind Closed Doors
4. Walter Trout - Blues for the modern daze
5. Joe Bonamassa - You and Me, with the superb cover of Zeppelins Tea for One on it, with Doug Henthorn on leading vocals.
Tom
Me too, Brenski but I don't think I could think of 20 albums better than Queen's best.
Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Rush and Muse are favourite bands of Queen fans, so we have more in common than you might think :-)
some already listed (Eagles, Pink Floyd, Joe Bonamussa (just for the 'Tea For One' rendition)
Dream Theater - Disk 2 of 'Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (or 'Octavarium' and 'Scenes From A Memory')
Alice Cooper - 'Billion Dollar Babies'
Led Zeppelin - 'Zoso' (or 'Physical Graffiti')
Styx - 'Grand Illusion' (or 'Pieces of Eight')
The Beatles - nothing beats Side Two of 'Abbey Road'....except what should have been 'Sgt Pepper' (including sessions and the original Side One)
Sgt Pepper/ With A Little Help From My Friends / Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite/ Getting Better/ Fixing A Hole/ Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds/ She's Leaving Home
Strawberry Fields Forever/ Pennylane/ When I'm Sixty-Four/ Lovely Rita/ Good Morning Good Morning/ Sgt Pepper Reprise/ A Day In The Life
Honorable mention:
Journey -'Escape'
Boston - 'Don't Look Back' (side one is an 11+)
Yes - 'Fragile', 'The Yes Album', 'Going For The One' ('Awaken' anyone?), '90125'
The Doors - 'LA Woman'
Bryan Adams - 'Reckless'
Queensryche - 'Empire' (or 'Operation Mindcrime')
REM - 'Automatic For The People', 'Monster'
Rush - four or five, take your pick
Van Halen - '5150', 'OU812'
Springsteen- 'Darkness at the Edge of Town'
Jethro Tull - 'Aqualung' (or 'Thick as a Brick')
just skimming the surface here......
Well, I can't help but feel that I'm lying if I say that an artist has released something equal to, let alone top, Queen II or A Day At The Races. However, the 5 that *might* just close to them are:
1 - The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
2 - Fleetwood Mac: Rumours
3 - Pink Floyd: Dark Side Of The Moon
4 - Billy Joel: The Stranger (shut up laughing, you bastards....it's a great album).
5 - The Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour
Honourable mentions to Bat Out Of Hell, The Velvet Underground & Nico, Wish You Were Here, Led Zeppelin II, Tapestry and even Barcelona :)
I agree that there aren't many better albums than Queen's best - which is why I'm such a big Queen fan I suppose. Also I'm not sure how OP defines "better" - more enjoyable, better from a musical/technical viewpoint or something else.
But if there are indeed "better albums", I'd say they can likely be found amongst some of the above mentioned alternatives. Would add Manfred Mann's Earth Band's proggy Nightingales & Bombers to the list though - that album easily tops anything The Beatles, Floyd or Zeppelin ever did IMO.
