QUEEN TO RELEASE RARE RECORDING OF LANDMARK CONCERT QUEEN: LIVE AT THE RAINBOW ’74 Previously unreleased first live album finally surfaces after 40 year wait. Sunday 31st March 1974 is a landmark date in the history of rock music. It is now celebrated in the multi format release of a rare recording made at legendary London venue The Rainbow, of a concert by a then up-and-coming band called Queen. Few who turned up for that iconic performance could have predicted they would go on to become arguably the world’s best and most successful rock group, although many more may have suspected it after this stunning show. Among the unique material contained in this release are over a dozen tracks never previously released on any official Queen live album. The release will come in CD, Vinyl and standard DVD or SD Blu-Ray formats available as standard releases or special limited edition sets as well as digital formats. That concert, being heard live for the first time in the soon to be released Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74, marked the culmination of the band’s countrywide tour, their first as headliners - hot on the heels of a tour supporting Mott the Hoople, late in 1973, on which they were widely regarded as having blown the hit band off the stage. Queen got rave reviews, almost unheard of for a support band, and it was obvious that in future they would be top of the bill. The band’s momentum had been building since the release of their eponymous album in July 1973 and, following their success on the Mott tour, at the beginning of 1974 they were tipped as Band of the Year in UK music paper Disc and Music Echo. Just before the March Rainbow gig, Queen performed their new single Seven Seas of Rhye on must-see UK TV music show Top of the Pops. The highly coveted slot was a lucky break - they filled in for an absent David Bowie, who was unavailable - and the band made the most of it, delivering a thrilling performance that pushed the song into the Top 10. Although the group now had a first hit single under its belt, and second album Queen II had just been released to critical acclaim, many felt that playing The Rainbow was overambitious. It was the premier London venue of the time, on a par with L.A.’s Palladium and New York’s Fillmore East. But the band had paid its dues, slugging it out in clubs and college halls for four years, and never doubting their own potential. The band’s confidence was vindicated when the venue quickly sold out the capacity of more than 3,000 seats – with some fans paying as much as £1.20 for a ticket! Queen’s performance was spectacular from the second that Freddie Mercury strutted onto the stage in his soon to become trademark white “eagle suit”, a tight -fitting number specially made for him by top fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, which featured flowing winged sleeves. He pranced and posed, capturing the audience in seconds with his extraordinary voice and stage presence, while Brian May provided the counterpoint with his remarkable and ground-breaking guitar playing. The powerful “engine room” (as they liked to call it) of drummer Roger Taylor and bass player John Deacon completed a sound unlike anything British audiences had previously heard. Enraptured fans clapped and cheered, and gave the band a standing ovation. That electrifying show was recorded by Roy Thomas Baker, co-producer of Queen's first four studio albums, and slated to be the band's third album (and debut live album) - a career defining release like James Brown's Live At The Apollo or The Who's Live At Leeds. Intended to be a recording that captured the magic of a live band firing on all cylinders, Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74 would undoubtedly have been a big success. But Queen’s ferocious creative momentum produced a stack of new songs begging to be recorded and instead of releasing the live album the band went into the studio to record what was to become 1974's breakthrough album, Sheer Heart Attack. As a result the already completed Rainbow live album was shelved and consigned to the archives. Later in 1974 Queen had their first chart-topping single, Killer Queen, which encapsulated their brand of driving rock and clever lyrics. It appeared on Sheer Heart Attack, which was released in the autumn, was a massive hit and remains to this day many fans’ favourite Queen album. To celebrate this success and crown a remarkable year, Queen returned to The Rainbow in November 1974 for two sell-out gigs that were even more spectacular than the one in March. These concerts included the typically flamboyant performance of Now I’m Here with which they had been wowing audiences on the tour. It featured Freddie apparently appearing in a spotlight on opposite sides of the stage almost simultaneously. The concerts received massive acclaim from fans and critics alike, and won over many who had until then doubted the band’s potential. In this year, Queen also undertook their first concerts in Australia, USA, Sweden, Finland, Holland, Belgium and Spain. Now, a remarkable 40 years later, Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74 has finally surfaced from the archives, providing an invaluable record of emerging superstars demonstrating their talent. Queen, Virgin Records and Eagle Rock Entertainment are proud to announce that Queen: Live at the Rainbow ‘74 will be released on 8th September 2014 (UK on Virgin Records) and 9th September 2014 (US through Hollywood Records) in a variety of formats all newly mixed and mastered to the highest contemporary standard. These range from a standard two CD package, a DVD, an SD Blu-ray, a gate-fold double vinyl (including an audio reproduction of the aforementioned original live album), a quadruple vinyl boxed set, to a super deluxe collector’s edition. This comprehensive and fascinating package includes two CDs, a DVD and Blu-Ray, a 60 page hardback book containing many rare photographs, and various items of memorabilia such as reproductions of the tickets, show souvenir programme and poster, as well as material from the band members’ personal archives. (Full details of the various packages which will be released can be found at the end of this release). Vinyl and super deluxe formats are released as limited editions. These recordings capture Queen at that time in all their glory: the dramatic stage presence, the highly original self-penned repertoire of songs, high-energy performances coupled with stunning melodic and harmonic content, and the uncompromising perfectionist approach to every aspect of their performance which is still maintained to this day. Queen dazzled their audiences in 1974 with an unforgettable show delivered with a skill and confidence which belied their youth. The tape machines were rolling, capturing the highly electric performances. Now, to mark the 40th anniversary of these legendary shows, here, finally, is Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74 - lovingly restored, edited, mixed and digitally mastered, and including much footage never previously seen. It is a collection every Queen fan will want to possess. I just crapped my pants. I really really hope they haven't overdubbed it to death. That's my only fear. This is the best Queen news since 2004 (when they released Milton Keynes). There are two things which make it "only" a great release 1) just one November show? Really? That's what got me quite angry to be honest. Will we get at least the info from which night comes which song since it's obviously a merge of both nights? 2) Splitting the songs featuring solos (Son And Daughter, Keep Yourself Alive) into 3 songs - come on, that's what the bootlegers do, why do you have to do split the tracks so illogically? :-( Well with these 2 points in mind, I can only say that IT'S THE BEST QUEEN RELEASE IN THE LAST 20 YEARS !!! If there wasn't these 2 points, I would call it A PERFECT RELEASE, but now I can call it "ONLY" the BEST RELEASE IN 20 YEARS :-) Honestly, where can I pre-order the deluxe package ? :-) THANK YOU !!! FINALLY I am excited about something Queen related !!! THANKS AGAIN !!! Time for Jaegermeister :-) |

Rock Montreal and Budapest are two really good releases, you can only complain about they should found the complete Budapest film before was lost. But the audio of both of them is super. And with the re-release of Wembley they put 1st night on the mix, that was good too. And now Rainbow looks like the best release of all, i'm waiting to get it. |

I have trouble reading the press release. Can I get every available track on any of the packages or do I have to buy a number of products to do that? ps the vinyl looks great, really great, but it's a luxury item these days. Great to look at but can't play or no point in playing unless you have a top quality turntable, amp and speakers. |
Toon_86 16.06.2014 12:33 |
Think you've 2 x choices, buy pack 2+3 = all the audio / video, or pack 7 = everything, plus extras. Only thing on the deluxe that would be something I'd never use is "2) A DVD and SD Blu-Ray of the November show with four “bonus” tracks from March" I would prefer one or the other, both is a bit overkill. |

I can't believe, a dream come true! ;-))) only one thing, in 2007 in his website Brian said link "It’s [Montreal] one of only three concerts of Queen captured on FILM rather than crappy non-hi-res digital – they are: Live at the Rainbow in 1974, this concert, and Budapest in 1986 – which will be a future project – and will be sensational" so I was expecting a movie in hd, perhaps it was not possible for the films of that time? Wow..........just wow...........this is just......utterly, thoroughly, freakin amazing news! Put me down for the 2 cd version, the second it comes out! And a live version of Fairy Fellers Master Stroke????? Interesting indeed...... The thing I never liked about the November show's recording was the all the editing...putting songs in sort of a medley that they never did play in that order........nice to see that changed! |

I haven't posted here in forever, but damn if this press release in my inbox didn't get my heart racing! This is simply amazing! The March show was one of my oldest vinyl bootlegs I've had since I was a kid, the 'Sheetkeekers' version. And now finally a complete release of the whole thing, will wonders never cease! Plus the November show in full on video (ok, a comp of the 2 nights, but at least it appears, all the songs played!). And about that 'Fairy Fellers' thing, has anyone here ever heard a live version of it? I'm really wondering how much of it they played, and if it's just a bit of it in a medley, like 'Black Queen.' Either way, this whole thing is just too cool! :-) So, tonight, I'm off to the iHeart show, on the heels of this news, what a day! I'm with The Wizard on this one! Cheers! Steve Z |

snelly1 16.06.2014 16:30 |
As per Queen Online "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke, (from Queen II) was inspired by a painting by Richard Dadd (1817-1886) which now hangs in the Tate Gallery, having been donated to the gallery by war poet Siegfried Sassoon. The song is by far the most significant song on the Rainbow project in terms of rarity. The March 31st show was the last time Queen performed it in concert and this is the only known live recording of the song. The track’s appearance on this package is likely to be the biggest surprise on the set." |

A Word In Your Ear wrote: SD Bluray!!!!! Bah Humbug!!! ;-)If it was shot on video tape, then the quality of the bluray will be far superior to the DVD. DVD is limited to 480 horizontal lines and the mpeg2 codec is old. By utilising the extra capacity of a bluray disc, they can make use of the full 625 line resolution of the original material, use a more advanced codec than mpeg or at the very least the same mpeg2 HD codec used for HD broadcasts AND the uadio could be uncompressed. I'm all for SD Bluray and think everything in future should be released on it, including re-releases of previous stuff (Milton Keynes 82/Wembley 86 etc). My ONLY concern is that they'll fuck-scale it, sorry, upscale it to 60i, which will result in 5 extra frames per second that need to be created, thus giving it a smeary/jerky look like NTSC looks on PAL systems. Of course, if they can make it 23.97, that's fine by me as most modern PAL HD TV's should be able to cope with that much better than 60i. |

Thank you. I may go for the deluxe box if it's a reasonable price but as I have no interest in reproduction tickets etc it may be a case of buying the DVDs and CDs separately.
As for the vinyl, well wow! It's almost like going back in time. A "new" concert from the 1970s, on vinyl, with the originally planned artwork. Amazing. But I have too much vinyl sitting around already and no way to play it since my turntable packed it in about a year ago. Still, my ELO coloured vinyl LPs look nice :)

I'm with Akin, Budapest was a disappointment. I had it on VHS and the blu-ray upgrade wasn't much of an improvement. So VHS quality vs Blu-Ray quality is about the same? I think Budapest looks pretty damn great, maybe except for colour correction. Well, theoretically it will be an improvement in a sense that they can fit much higher bitrate on Blu-Ray and BR codec is superior to the old MPEG-2, so there would be hardly any compression. I think it would overall look a bit better. |

Fantastic news!!! HOLY GRAIL and finally almost perfect release with proper Super Deluxe Box option and of course SD-Blu-ray. It's a pity that there're no alternate versions of songs from November shows (Liar power cut for example) or some backstage footage with original sound in the BONUS SECTION. As I see there's no whole Big Spender-Bama Lama Bama Loo section, not only Big Spender in the tracklist of March '74 show. It is possible that there was only one encore feturing SWAFIB in this concert for some reason. I can't see any reason to cut ~3-4 minutes from this show. Only if there was any technical failure in recording process... We don't have any confirmation of Big Spender-Bama Lama Bama Loo being played on Queen II UK Tour at all. I don't count one newspaper review as they usually semi-truthful. Also I don't remember any SHA 1974 tour audience recording with GSTQ in the end. Hope it's not fake ending of concert... |

For the lack of Big Spender in the March show... can it be timing issues? or maybe the band messed the song? And a question for the experts, was The March of the Black Queen played in March, or only in November? |

That said, if Rainbow is only released on NTSC DVD or 60i BD as they have been since QPL signed to Island, then to the 3/4 of the world that have PAL systems, THAT will look shitter than it ought. . |

60Hz = NTSC 50Hz = PAL My guess is: It would have been recorded in PAL 576i But we will probably get NTSC 480i Blu ray probably 16:9 pillar box. Since there no longer seems to be a quality issue these days (see 'The Lot') then a needless conversion is the order of the day. The native and definitive release will elude us. Shame. |

Negative Creep 27.06.2014 15:54 |
Nitroboy wrote: But why do they suddenly convert everything to NTSC? Obviously the source material is PAL, so why not release it in PAL here in Europe?Because Universal are cheapskates (although to be honest, how much extra would it cost them to convert a PAL master to NTSC? Next to nothing I would imagine). If they had any respect for their customers, they would create the digital master in PAL, and create an inferior NTSC master for the US. The issue is that in the US they apparently don't sell DVD players and TV's that can handle PAL, yet in Europe/ROW, 99% of players can play both. It seems Univeral are more concerned with US customers being able to purchase import DVDs from Amazon and be able to watch them, instead of them purchasing their own domestic releases. Fuck knows. |

Yes it would, but that's not what you were asking. Any version should look better on blu ray rather than a DVD (potentially a higher bitrate could be used) A PAL version would look better than an NTSC one - full stop. An interlaced disc would look better on a CRT rather than an LCD. |

Hello everybody, I know it's been a while since the last post but I would really like to ask something: I recently got the In The Lap Of The Gods booleg on the Hitchhicker label. I want to ask if it's true that the tracks on the boot are from Nov, 19. I' asking because I want to torrent it on the Pink Floyd community and don't want to mess around with the officially released stuff. I haven't bought the box set yet, that's why I can't compare the tracks. I think at least there's somethin from Nov 19 as the song ITLOFG is not on the box set. Thanks. |

To make a long story short - there really isn't anything on the bootlegs or older versions that the official release doesn't do better. So I wouldn't bother. The only confirmation we have about track dates stems from this: link A few more tidbits are discussed here: link There just isn't enough source material to make any more conclusions about what comes from what night. Just grab the 2 CD version and the blu-ray and you're good to go. |
