And I think it'd be better if you weren't here. Seriously - all you do is whine. Do you even like Queen? Or anything? Offer something positive or constructive for a change. |

matt z 23.04.2014 13:16 |
It would make a more "accessible" song without it. But in the course of a dream/nightmare it is quite an artistic expression of turmoil |
mooghead 23.04.2014 13:29 |
I like cake... and beer. Positive enough for you? I only say because I have just listened to the album all the way through for the first time in a while and it is ridiculously, superbly brilliant. If I was to play the album to a Queen virgin I could extol its brilliantness all the way through, apart from that bit, I would be.. 'I don't know why this is here?!' Brian wanted to do his guitar thing but with voices. I find myself clock watching. (Incidentally, there is an unintentional hit of a bass string part way through the vocal bit) |

mooghead wrote: I just think it would be better if it wasn't there....Actually, I kinda like it. Makes the song a bit unique. And Freddie's voice is always a treat for the ears... |

Better to listen to it through one speaker if you must... |
k-m 23.04.2014 15:23 |
The middle bit sucks big time. The Prophet's Song is majestic and freaking awesome, but the middle bit is embarrassing and a pain to listen to. It never seems to end. |
k-m 23.04.2014 15:24 |
This and Sweet Lady - the only weaknesses of the album. |
mooghead 23.04.2014 15:24 |
How dare you! |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 23.04.2014 16:23 |
The Prophet's song is a perfect masterpiece as it is. And please be nice to each other, kids. :) Cheers, Ogre- |
mooghead 23.04.2014 16:27 |
It would be a masterpiece... its just that bit in the middle..... ;-) |
Stelios 23.04.2014 17:01 |
I agree. Some over -indulgence with the delay thing that seemed to facinate both Brian and Freddie a looooot. Also Freddie's vocals are not as typicaly top -notch. In the "now i know" part as he is reaching higher notes there is audiable strain in the voice and luck of thickness I think if they used more effects/sounds or better multi-harmonies it could be a psycadelic thing and not this multy-cry out loud -WTF! section. |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 23.04.2014 19:37 |
I got the point of some of you, but I HAVE to disagree. I grew up listening to that bit and showing it proudly to everyone around as proof of how wonderful and unpredictable Queen could be. A song that starts calmly, gains rhythm, pace and groove and then rocks. Then it stops all of the sudden and warns us of The Prophecy with multiple multiplied anxious Mercury vocals. "Death all around.. ". Then you have what could be a choir of angels, that also becomes anxious or nervous... So, the best of hard rock takes over. Bang! Masterpiece, just like it is. Bohemian Rhapsody's not-so-pop bastard sister. Love it, I really do. Cheers, Ogre- |
Wiley 23.04.2014 20:05 |
Would have made a cool B-side to Bohemian Rhapsody, maybe even editing the vocal bit to make it a bit more accessible. Although, why would they edit the B-side and not the A-side? |
Sheer Brass Neck 23.04.2014 21:49 |
The middle part is a descent into madness. Or lucidity. Not all songs are meant to be 3 minutes with no point. |
Sebastian 24.04.2014 00:11 |
I like it. I don't consider it the best thing ever to have graced the universe, but I like it. |
Martin Packer 24.04.2014 01:19 |
I rather like the whole of Prophet's Song and also Sweet Lady. |

After YTMBA, The Prophet's Song is my favorite Queen track! Love that vocal thing... It's great to listen to it on full volume... |

I actually agree. I prefer the song without the vocal interlude in the middle. I have a downloaded version without it I downloaded from YouTube made by a fan called Prophets song 'fickle mix'. Try that if you'd prefer the song without the vocals in the middle. |
Heavenite 24.04.2014 08:22 |
I absolutely loved the middle vocal bit for years! I've got to admit that these days I don't get it so much. But when I do, it's still an "oh man!" thing. |

only thing that really interests me about TPS is did Dr May just get lazy with White Man and just used all the leftover bits of tape from Prophet Song? cos there's some striking similarities - in bOTH the louder/faster bits AND the quieter/SLOWER sections |

JacquesDaniels 25.04.2014 07:34 |
Damn, that shortened "single" version just reminds me how important the middle vocal bit is there. When I first heard the song, I actually had a nightmare because it gave such powerful imagery of the idea behind a man's useless cry for help when the world is about to end, which it eventually will, although no-one will ever listen and act on it. I always thought the vocal bit is more about the slow and uncontrollable destruction of mankind in one possible future, which concludes in a seemingly happy ending "oh look, the world didn't end after all", and everybody's mocking the mad man for making them think it's going to happen any minute now. Then, the song ends with a fairly dark note, indicating that the lurking danger isn't over. Apart from that, the transition to the guitar solo without the vocal part sounds illogical and awkward, unless you cut even more from the song, still taking more away from the gravity of the subject. Speaking of subject gravity... link |

The middle part of The Prophet's Song has always reminded me a little of (a modern take on) the medieval vocal-composition style called organum. I found that appropriate considering the imagery of the song. |

When I first got ANATO I loved the album, but The Prophets Song was something I just had to go back to over and over again, the mood, the story, the light and shade and that vocal section, although very different, seemed to echo what the earlier albums had been about. A true epic. |
brENsKi 25.04.2014 11:30 |
i always felt it was a bit "forced"..almost like Queen trying too hard to be like Genesis/Yes/Zep |
The Real Wizard 25.04.2014 12:14 |
Even if that's the case, what's wrong with that? For millennia, artists have been influenced by their peers and took things a step further. But in this case - there's nothing in the world that sounds like that track, before or since. Side B of A Night At The Opera is by far the most interesting, creative and unique side of music in the Queen catalog. Every note is timeless perfection. |
Heavenite 25.04.2014 19:06 |
I know a few people that became hooked on Queen to the next level because of The Prophet's Song, including me. The middle bit was part of that. Although if you're not in it fully going wow!, I agree that it can seem a bit forced or unnecessary. |

several Old Testament/Noah's Ark references in the song so a little "topical" that this should get brought up now of all times....just when "Noah" is doing the run at the cinemas |

Listening to this song when I first got ANATO painted a very vivid image about the old man, the nightmare, death, etc., one that I still remember 22 years later. Great song. Even at times when I say the middle part bores me, I very rarely skip it. Bob, your comment about ANATO's B side being by far the most interesting, creative and unique side of music in the Queen catalog... In my case, I would extend it to all of ANATO if only Sweet Lady wasn't there :). I love every single song in there. From Death on two leg's intro to '39. Seaside Rendezvous is also classic Queen. Ok ok, it's a hard rock song in 6/8 time signature... big whoop. It's still cheesy as hell. |
Nitroboy 27.04.2014 04:03 |
If you actually listen to the lyrics, and know what the song is about, that middle piece makes perfect sense. |
