I was listening today to the first two Darkness albums, and it occurred to me, is this the kind of stuff that Brian & Roger should be making now, and maybe the sort of album they should aim to make with Glambo ? Tongue in cheek, over the top, guitar orchestration by the ton, and of course those layered harmonies, I'd love it, what do you all think ?
No. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Darkness back in the day, and I sometimes go back and enjoy the facetiousness of it all, but the novelty wears thin after a while. They're not really appealing to the masses anymore, and they're as much a parody of themselves as Queen are. It would reek of desperation if Queen were to try that angle. I'm sure there are some who'll disagree, but the moment is lost for me - Queen are too slow, almost the opposite of what they were before when they were pioneers, and had visions ahead of their time. Jaysus, even when My Chemical Romance gave 'em a nod with the Innuendo-esque "Welcome To The Black Parade", they missed their chance to compliment it. As I recall, that single was a huge hit in a time dominated by R&B/Hip-Hop and the like, and Queen could easily have weighed in to show folk that they could both compliment AND compete. Instead, they were concentrating on musicals and touring with PR, churning out the hits to the die-hards, instead of getting new stuff out there whilst the genre was popular once more. Too slow to be looking back at that avenue now. Way too slow.
Lets face it ,Queen are never going to be cutting edge again, they might get a hit single if they release one of the tracks that Freddie did with Michael Jackson but thats about all.

Surely Queen did jump on the '...black parade' bandwagon by Brian playing with My Chemical Romance at Reading?!?
I thought someone would say that - I actually had the answer in my OP as an explanation as to how slow Brian actually is to trends in the market, but edited it. I wish I'd left it in now.
Black Parade released - October 2006
Brian appears with My Chemical Romance - August 2011
5 years off the mark.
The Darkness release Permission To Land - July 2003
Brian appears with The Darkness - December 2011
8 years off the mark.
Brian learns lesson within 10 years and jumps on the current trend...we get PSY and Dappy!!!! Wrong genre, wrong angle, bad timing.
Points very well made Skye, and I thoroughly agree, I remember thinking when Queen were at the height of their powers that Brian's choice of collaborating with anybody who seemed to ask didn't do him any favours, instead of totally concentrating on making some stunning solo albums. The band have wasted so many years since Freddie's death on projects that don't cover them in glory, in my opinion they should have reformed after 3 years of made in heaven, with a new bass player, a new singer, never mind the showman crap, just an excellent singer, if the new material had been up to their high standards the fans would have gone with it, like AC/DC and others.I hope and pray they don't screw up this unheard stuff of Freddie's, it could give Queen one last big hurrah !

I totally agree. And Roger and Brian just don't have it in them any more.
I agree with that noorie, the boys most productive years are behind them, but I often think to myself if you took an amalgam of the best tracks from Brian & Roger's solo stuff, and put them on Queen albums sung by themselves and another top front man, we could've had some cracking post Freddie Queen albums. Too late now though : (
The list of bands that have lost band members is endless really ,won't bore u with them all but ,Deep Purple,Whiesnake,UFO,Pink Floyd,Black Sabbath,Yes,Genesis,Skynard,Quo,Rainbow,i think you get the general idea.I was one of Fredies biggest fans i loved the guy,But looking back 20 years doing the best part of fuck all, what a waste of time,I think two or three years down the line we could have found someone worthy to take over the vocals and a new bass player. We could have had three or four albums and some tours.I know we could never have another freddie or John but we could have had a real band and you never know we could have had some good stuff.Instead of that we have had 20 years of mourning Freddie.Freddie would have been dissapointed,as am i.Trying to do it now with AL is all too late they look and sound like OAPS,which i think they are !! All we will get from these concerts is greatist hits with maybe one or two tracks for the purists.
If the tour comes to u.k I will go, but out of loyalty to Queen, in all honesty I'd much rather be going to watch Roger's tour or better still the Cross, but you summed it up well Phil, as I said Bohemian........Amen : (
