its like as artistic as it gets, and serious stuff also, but who actually had the idea for that famous One Vison last line? Was it Jim Hutton? |
winterspelt 24.10.2012 23:45 |
According to Jim Hutton, it was Freddie who said "Fried Chicken" but I dont know if someone else have another version of that line |
tomchristie22 25.10.2012 00:29 |
Are you talking about who came up with it, or who sings the line in the actual track? On the track it's quite obviously Freddie and either Roger & Brian (most likely) on vocal harmonies, or multiple overdubs of Freddie. As for who's idea it was, I've heard the story many times and each time it's been different in some respect. As far as I know, they'd eaten fried chicken for dinner, and Freddie had the idea to throw it in as the closing line. Jim Hutton encouraged him to do so, saying that he was 'big enough' to get away with it. |
Martin Packer 25.10.2012 01:49 |
... at a time when Jim scarcely knew who Queen were, let alone that they were big enough. :-) |
Sebastian 25.10.2012 02:01 |
It's not the last line. After 'fried chicken' there's a multi-tracked 'vision vision vision vision...' and then 'God works in mysterious ways'. *That* is the last line. |

Martin Packer wrote: ... at a time when Jim scarcely knew who Queen were, let alone that they were big enough. :-)I bet he quite soon realised how big they were. Let alone he was on Live Aid backstage. That is almost the bigest they could get (and we are talking BIG) with some exceptions. |

In my strange convoluted mind, I consider it the last line in the lead vocal, at least. My mistake. |

About the fact that he didnt knew Queen, that's not as strange as you may think. I didnt knew Muse or that girl who sang WWRY (among other acts) until I saw them at the Olympics also, remember that there wasnt internet in the 70s/80s so it was a lot harder for people not into the rock/pop/metal/whatever scene to know even the most famous acts. |
Heavenite 25.10.2012 16:04 |
That's true. And I reckon that's why Queen albums started to sell their tits off when the rest of the rock community saw how much better they were than the other acts. |

But I guess that would account for that outbreak of "mad chicken disease" after his death though....lol. |

Given that the song is linked to Live Aid (to the point that the Press were asking if it was going to be a charity single) and given it;s lyrics and what it's supposed to be about, the fried chicken lyrics are incredibly tasteless. It's crass things like this that made much of the British music press hate them. |

Starvation? *exploitation, rape, legal crimes and a foundation of lies and schemes and resultant racial psychosis/schism. Anyways, yeah, to an outsider it might be trivial. I've seen it and experienced it and dealt with it firsthand. I still think it was an attempt to take the "edge" (as in a "stance") off the recording. Me thinks this is so polarizing it should be asked on BM's soapbox. Or at least tagged upon his soapbox.... In black shoe polish *pollack |

Yeah, don't always have to agree with what some artists do so long as the art spoke of something. It WAS pretty offensive if it was to be interpreted that way (which i seriously believe it was meant to be) i just dont know why they included it. Anyways. Someone's said it up there ^^ about the press ragging on their disregard for things. Although Fred has a reputation of being generous... i think that was a pretty derogatory thing to utilize. Ignorant sounding shiite. Someone should ask Brian May on his soapbox if it was an off color remark about black people. |

Obviously it has nothing to do with anything |
Your Fairy King 19.11.2012 19:57 |
I've always considered this line in extremely poor taste. If the song is "about" Martin Luther King, Jr (per Roger) what then is to be made of them including such a derogatory racist stereotype at the end of the song? |
DragonOnMyBack 21.11.2012 07:20 |
I don't think the finished song really resembles Roger's original idea about Martin Luther King very much. In my view the final version is more generally related to peoples wants and ambitions. If anything I think the "Fried Chicken" line was probably kept in as a reference to the rampant consumerism / excess of society in the UK and West during the mid 80s, as a contrast to what was happening in Africa at the time, to illustrate that people were basically just self indulgent and ignoring what else was going on in the world. Maybe I am reading too much into it. :-) |
jones904 21.11.2012 08:10 |
If it was about anything (and i dont think it was anything but a throw away lineleft over from the various food type improvisations, that defended john deacon infact, contray to popular belief) so .........it would be about cannibalism, as the world freddie was talking about cannot exist and would lead to starvation, and seemingly human flesh tastes like fried chicken. But seriously.. it refers to Chicken Kapone. |

Yeah, me too! They might not even have been aware of the "fried chicken - watermelon" stereotype. In fact its something I've only become aware of more recently, so I have no idea how long its been around. Maybe Queen didn't know about it either then, and if so the whole idea that is a slur thing is completely misplaced. |
