Just clearing out some draws and I found an interview with Brian from when Innuendo was released, in which they are talking about what equipment was used, Brian states he used a Zoom on one track (or part of it)
At this time there was only one Zoom product I still have it, it clipped on to your belt and simulated amps and effects basically, i remeber being very interested to find out which track it was? does anyone know i never found out...
I used to have a zoom effect that comes with some patterns similar to the guitar sound on Headlong. That bubble one. I don't know how to be more specific.
Excuse me for my crappy english
Zoom....Jesus Christ!!Did Bri use it for those terrible 'jams' on those US radio-stations tour thing he did. Ya know, those ones where it showed that he ain't a 'winger' ?
Cheap, horrible sounding stuff. He could have done 'Delilah' (and the whole Innuendo album) with a better brand but, I guess he does get a little over-awed/deluded occasionally...?
I think you have to remember that this was early 90's and it was the first of a long line of digital processing tools, actually you can get some decent sounds out of it, certainly on par with many of todays expensive processors. Once you EQ it you might be surprised. I remember he raved about it so much they brought out a version with a brian may setting on I think.
If he played it via an AC30 it would sound as powerful as any effects processor out there.
Headlong might well be on the mark the 'bubble' sound is very reminisant of a digital effect processor so maybe...

That could very well be it! There were certainly no Queen tracks prior to Innuendo that had that particular weird effect on the guitar sound, especially as heard on the song before the guitar solo.
Good subject
The zoom effects were popular in the late 80's early 90's - still in production I think
I believe Brian used a zoom on some of the Miracle tracks (certainly sounds like it on Khashoggi's ship and Party)
The bubble sounds on Headlong are CERTAINLY from a zoom box (possible a 9002), Don't try so hard is another likely zoom solo
The patches on the 9002 model also sound VERY like Chinese Torture...
The 9002 is a small box, originally designed to be laced onto a guitar strap with either a small hand-selector switch or a foot controller
Useful boxes in the 90's - only problem with them was switching between patches - took a few moments for the new patch to kick-in leaving the guitar silent
Otherwise they were/are quite useful in recreating alot of Brian's sounds from this time
From memory, they also had a quite convincing Edge/U2 patch
I had an early-ish 90's Zoom unit and it did the exact bubble thing from Headlong. Did quite a few peculiar honky guitar sounds that sounded like they were (at least trying to be) Brian May-ish.
I emailed Brian a website with old 3d photographes I have found and snuck in a quick question regarding the Zoom, and indeed he did use the 9002 on Headlong!! however that was all the detail I got.
