Very happy to have a stand alone version of 'Khashoggi's Ship'! Looks like a kick-ass list to me! |
Pim Derks 26.07.2011 11:37 |
Khashoggi's Ship, stand-alone version? Nice! Nice selection, good to see Machines included. One of the most awesome tracks they ever did. Surprised to see Winter's Tale though, as I think it was a top 10 hit and was already included on Hits 3... |
koldweather123 26.07.2011 11:40 |
Good tracklist, would've liked to see Gimme the Prize but I suppose the Hitman covers the heavier aspects. VERY glad to see Mother Love, Don't Try so Hard and Bijou in there, all three are wonderful songs that portray Freddies latter state. |

Does "Khashoggi's Ship" include the drum count-in removed from the album, which appears on The eYe version? Is "It's A Beautiful Day (Reprise)" the LP version (which fades out after the second "Yeah") or the full 25 minute album version (which was mastered into 3 tracks on MIH)? Or possibly a new edit? Interesting, ending with "Mother Love" and not "Was It All Worth It," though "One Year Of Love" sort of continues the orchestral feel after it. No "Man On The Prowl" or "Open Windows". I'm not surprised by no tracks like "I Go Crazy" or "Hang On In There," I knew they'd stick with the original album tracks. Only one track from A Kind Of Magic? Hmm Assuming they use the LP version of the Reprise, the run time will be about 58 minutes. |

Good Tracklist |
Mr. Bulsara 26.07.2011 12:23 |
Too me is good but not great setlist. A winter's tale wasn't included in gh3 so it's great to see in the list. But leaving out "Scandal" and "Keep passing the open windows" it's a sin. Too me tear it up is not a strong track, but since is a Brian composition, i'm no surprise. And just one "A Kind of Magic" song. "Gimme the Prize" could be a good choice. But overall is not a bad tracklisting. Cheers |
Mr. Bulsara 26.07.2011 12:33 |
And by the way. Why they didn't put 15 tracks in the previous "Deep Cuts"? |
bigV 26.07.2011 12:33 |
Will there be any unique versions in this one (aside from the obvious)? V. |
dysan 26.07.2011 13:33 |
I can't tell you how poor this looks! A real shame. Regarding edits etc - previous DC CDs have just had the tracks like if you played the CD and they start at the track marker (apart from the disappointing stand alond MOTBQ) - I doubt these will feature anything different. Maybe a rediscovered bass drum! |
shanoon 26.07.2011 13:47 |
to me the song order is crap again, like deep cuts 2.. and open windows should be on this.... nice that they end it with mother love |
Russian Headlong 26.07.2011 13:53 |
These are a waste of time. At least should have Princes of the Universe and Gimme The Prize on it, classics! |
Holly2003 26.07.2011 14:13 |
Picking non-hits from some of Queen's weakest albums was always going to be a hiding to nothing but even so, this is a dog's dinner of a release woith no rhyme or reason to the selections or the order of the tracks. Who in their right mind would buy this? Destined to quickly end up in Walmart bargain bins everywhere! |

I can't wait to see the sleevenotes. DC 1 was all revelling on the majesty of the early magic, likening the masterful songwriting of some tracks to BoRap and the studio artisty of a band finding their way. DC 2 explored the insane experimentation of a band at the height of it's powers while perhaps loosing their way as clasic song writers. DC 3? A cash cow that made albums only to pay the mortgage? Maybe I'm being cruel. but on the evidence of this DC comp, I hope Queen get taken apart in the music press. |
Dr Zoidberg 26.07.2011 15:39 |
Like everybody else, surprised at only one from AKOM (I expected the PISCTP single remix along with OYOL), shocked at FIVE from MIH (that's at least one too many), disappointed Machines is there instead of Keep Passing the Open Windows, sorry that the underrated Scandal didn't make it, surprised they didn't stick the 'Rocks Retake' of "I Can't Live With You" on instead of "The Hitman". I would have been fine with All God's People. I would have also chucked IABD (reprise) in favor of something else. Also a little surprised NOBY isn't there, which I guess means it will probably end up as a MIH bonus track? I don't see 'Rocks' going back into print anytime soon and as much as Brian loves NOBY and its place in the musical, I figure it would turn up on DC3 or as a MIH bonus. Its not a bad comp but some of the choices surprise me. As for what the sleeve notes for 3 will say, you know the theme will be Freddie's last days in the studio, bravely singing til the very end. Which, really, is only fair. And you people pissing on Bijou should be ashamed of yourselves. ASHAMED. |

Kashoggi's Ship is the SECOND track on "The Miracle" album and cuts in over the final "Overrrrrr" on "Party", so surely it already IS a standalone track if you trim it correctly? It's "Party" that has the end cut off and would therefore be a more interesting inclusion as a standalone.... |

On the original master of "Khashoggi's Ship," Roger plays a two bar drum count-in before the guitars and Freddie come in, Freddie singing "Who said that my party was all over?" That drum part appears unaltered on The eYe instrumental remix. It makes sense to have removed it for the album, to have "Khashoggi's Ship" literally interrupt "Party." For a stand-alone version, I'm not sure KS works as well starting the way it does on the album. Just my opinion, but the drum count works well, similar to the extra drum at the beginning of the Hollywood Records Version of "Thank God It's Christmas". And I'm curious which version of IABD Reprise they'll use. I'm guessing the LP Edit or something similar. |

Hummmmm .... quite surprising. My "thumbs down" on this tracklisting: 1. I Was Born To Love You: doesn't fit in the "digging deep" category, at least to me! a huge hit in Japan wich up to date is still being much aired in many radio stations in my country (Spain). I guess the same occurs in many other countries around the world. 2. A Winter's Tale: a reasonable hit at the time of it's release as a proper single. 3. Little exposure from AKOM: just one song wich is very present in one scene from a successful classic movie. I was expecting it to be included in DC3 anyway, but was convienced Don't Lose Your Head and Gimme The Prize would be in, too. 4. Scandal "out" !!: if A Winter's Tale, 2nd single of an ultra-succesful album, has been included ... why not Scandal, wich didn't receive the atention it deserved as the 4th (or 5th?) single of its album? Now that would have been "digging deep"! 5. Keep Passing The Open Windows "out" !!: not as flagrant as the unforgivable omision of "You and I" in DC1 ... but almost !! Thumbs up: 1. Made In Heaven: we're so familiar with this song ... and I completely forgot it wasn't released as a single! didn't expect it would be in. 2. Is this the world we created: nice ... but I would have always gone for KPTOW 3. The Hitman: was not in my predictions, as I expected I Can't Live With You instead. But I really prefer the former, as the later does sound like a rough demo to me compared to its wonderful "Rocks Re-take". 4. Khashoggi's Ship: who was expecting this one? just hope a nice standalone version is thrown in ! |

This is another QP joke, right ? Compilation so called DEEP cuts with not REAL DEEP CUTS likes demos, alternatives ? OK. But part 3 has also singles... 5 I Was Born To Love You - single 6 A Winter's Tale - single 10 One Year Of Love - single |
Jimmy Dean 28.07.2011 00:52 |
I hate Gimme the Prize - but my only relevant comment will be - I can't believe Gimme the Prize did not make it on this shitlist of a compilation... Did they place a bunch of cue cards on a table, blindfold someone, and then ask them to pick up 15 cards? No thought process - no flow - no proper choice cuts - fuck - Was It All Worth It was destined to be on this type of compilation... it's in no way a "Greatest Hit" but a good example of a "Deep Cut"... fuckin' eeediots. |

With four or five singles being taken from the albums by that stage the remaining pool is smaller and poorer quality. Choosing from the fifth best song on AKOM, sixth best on Miracle etc, only five songs left from The Works, including Man on the Prowl and Is This the World... Having said that I still think they could have done a much better job of this selection. |

The 'Deep Cuts' discs aren't intended for folks like us who have had all the records for years, so why are we all complaining over it? They're simply meant to give the Greatest Hits crowd a peek into the back catalog of the band. Sure, tastes will always be subjective, but on all three discs there are plenty of tracks that may inspire some casual fans to purchase albums like A Day At The Races and Innuendo. There's only one improvement I could suggest - make anything but Mother Love the last track. It should end on an upbeat note, not with the most depressing track in the Queen catalog. Swap tracks 14 and 15 and I think it's pretty solid. |
rhyeking 29.07.2011 15:34 |
Here's what they had to pick from; compared to the first two, the available tracks are fewer: Tear It Up Man On The Prowl Machines Keep Passing The Open Windows Is This The World We Created...? One Year Of Love Pain Is So Close To Pleasure Gimme The Prize Don't Lose Your Head Party Khashoggi's Ship Rain Must Fall Scandal My Baby Does Me Was It All Worth It I Can't Live With You Don't Try So Hard Ride The Wild Wind All God's People Delilah The Hitman Bijou It's A Beautiful Day Made In Heaven Mother Love My Life Has Been Saved I Was Born To Love You A Winter's Tale It's A Beautiful Day (Reprise) All the other tracks appear on Hits II or III, and that's the key. Yes, certain songs were moderate hits or singles in other territories, but Queen and/or QPL are standardizing the available hits collections in most countries with the three UK hits. The 1981 hits with multiple tracks are long out of print, I believe, and with Universal/Island Records now handling everything except North America (still Hollywood Records here), a new fan picking up Deep Cuts probably won't know "One Year Of Love" was a hit in a territory outside the UK. As noted before, this is an interim step between the Hits and the albums. |

We're all saying the same things over about 8 different threads. I'm losing track! And to whoever it was saying it's only a bloody record. Yes it is, and one that serves almost purpose, even compared to the previous DC collections. I think they should have not done Deep Cuts records and released the albums in 5 batches of 3. At the very least as a 'sampler' each batch coud've had it's own attendant 3 track triple A side single featuring a song from each of the 3 albums in those batches. Much more likelyhood of getting airplay. Batch 1: In The Lap Of The Gods Revisited / March Of The Black Queen / My Fairy King Batch 2: Sheer Heart Attack / You & I / Good Company Batch 3: Coming Soon / The Hero / Mustapha Batch 4: Staying Power / Gimme The Prize / Tear It Up Batch 5: Was It All Worth It / Don't Try So Hard / whatever MIH track Something like that. |

Not really sure who these Deep cut albums are aimed at.A die hard fan will already have all the tracks n I doubt a casual Queen listener would be interested in anythng other than Greatest Hits compilations. My only assumption is QPL know that completist will buy every release so theyve just made 3 more albums to buy out of old stuff. Why didnt they just release a cd of all the BBC sessions and both casual n diehards would of been happy as they did a mixture of singles n album tracks for the BBC |
dysan 30.07.2011 08:24 |
RE BBC sessions - exactly my point in the 'discussion piece' thread. My point about DC3 earlier in this thread is that for the casual listener, this is a very very weak album - at least DC1 compiled the 'famous' album tracks that always get refered to in magazine articles etc. Although I guess later in their career Queen didn't have many of them - just the rather macarbre 'final song with freddie' thing. Which is not nice. |
Maxïmo Razzamatazz 30.07.2011 10:46 |
Very ballsy move putting Taylor/May composition Machines on there as second. As much as I love the song I'm sure Mercury's Keep Passing The Open Windows has much greater appeal to people who are expected to buy these compilations. PS. Isn't the instrumental Machines a glaring omission on the The Works bonus disc? |

I dont get this whole Deep Cuts concept, why would someone new to Queen : buy Greatest Hits 1&2 or the Platinum collection, the Deep Cuts compilations and finally all the albums? "The last two had covers with live photos. Neither of them contained live tracks. Wow." ----- LOL - um, OK. Actually the cover on Deep Cuts 3 is NOT a 'live' photo - it's a photo from the Princes Of The Universe video shoot (isn't it??), so I thought that was strange. That was my point. But nevermind... |

Pretty sure they're not going to put the full album version of It's a Beautiful Day on the album. Probably be up to the "Yeah" part. Also like how the album ends with Mother Love.... Freddie's last song he recorded. |

Also, I couldn't agree more about Scandal. Once again, no respect. Such a shame. Left off Greatest Hits/Flix II, Greatest Hits/Flix III and now DC 3. Thank God for the Greatest Video Hits 2 DVD release and the Hollywood CD release (1991) of The Miracle (which contains the awesome Scandal 12" remix). |
rhyeking 09.08.2011 13:17 |
I got the impression from the Video Hits II commentary that Roger didn't think too highly of "Scandal," particularly the video, which he said "for a song named 'Scandal,' it wasn't scandalous enough." I think he liked the sentiment, if not the execution. That might have been enough to leave it off the collection. Also, you have to consider that they may have wanted to leave a few gems on the albums so when new fans picked up, say, The Works, they'd be blown away by the "Keep Passing The Open Windows." It might not have been a game of 'which song is better than another song,' but of 'let's show how diverse we are, beyond the Hits.' |
