Just watched the first part of 'Days Of Our Lives' on BBC2, Pretty general stuff, which is to be expected, but what did people make of the newer footage? I personally loved the 'News Of The World' behind the scenes footage. :) |
Fastidious and Precise 29.05.2011 17:22 |
Thought the first part was absolutely fantastic, especially the notw studio footage, especially the part of freddie laying down the vocal track of we are the champions. lots of great anecdotes in there as well, really enjoyed the one about freddie throwing the brick through john reids window after he walked out on him from a meal. great ending as well. cant wait for part 2!!!! |
Djdownsy 29.05.2011 17:29 |
Yeah that was brilliant, and the part where Reid was saying 'I came up to Freddie and said ''now i hope you have no problem with it, but just to let you know, I'm gay!'' And Freddie turned around and said, ''I'M GAY TOO!!'' ' :D |
Fastidious and Precise 29.05.2011 17:31 |
Can't wait to see what unseen footage they have in store for us tomorrow night. If it's half as good as part one we're in for a real treat! |
Djdownsy 29.05.2011 17:35 |
Without a doubt, even the teaser there where the guy asked Freddie how does it feel to play in front of 200,000 people and Freddie quiped, 'Well, I havnt done it yet' mad me laugh. :P |
Djdownsy 29.05.2011 17:36 |
*Made, sorry |
jamster1111 29.05.2011 17:42 |
can someone post it here or on youtube? |
brians wig 29.05.2011 17:42 |
The only trouble with the unseen footage is...... ... I wanna see it in its entirety WITHOUT anyone talking over the top of it!!!! Let's get those Bob Harris interview sessions released in full please!!!!!! |
Fastidious and Precise 29.05.2011 17:47 |
Well hopefully if we get and extended version dvd release of this, which has been hinted at, we might see some extended unseen footage or uncut/complete interviews as some bonus extras. who knows, but fingers crossed. they could do amazing things as dvd extras with a release like this!! |

Agree completely with the Bob Harris Interviews, they should be made widely available. :) |
Bad Seed 29.05.2011 18:01 |
Very disappointed to be honest. Some lovely footage is obviosly in the archives, NOTW stuff especially. But the odd second here and there was carrot dangling for me. Hope tomorrow night is better. Going to bed pretty gutted! |

Holly2003 29.05.2011 18:24 |
I thought it was excelent -- exactly the kind of thing we've been waiting for for a long long time. Highlights: -- there is great footage of Houston and Hyde Park, so hopefully they'll be released. -- the little snippet of info that Fred had written parts of BoRap at Ealing College including a song caled The Cowboy Song which began "Mama, just killed a man" ... -- Brian crying when talking about his dad -- very moving. |
Djdownsy 29.05.2011 18:55 |
Yeah Brian crying was a very big part imo. |
jaq 29.05.2011 19:56 |
And Bri finally reveals why he dislikes DSMN! (Darn grudge over Rhye solo, still...) Hyde Park image is so clear we can see eye movement. WATC recording...history in the making...very surprised to see it's a shut-eyed vocal take (no arm waving, fist pumping to carry La Voix yet...) |
MERQRY 29.05.2011 19:58 |

Thanks! And I can't wait for what I'm sure will be the Official Blu-Ray release of this documentary along side the '75 Hammersmith Xmas Show - it seems very likely this will finally happen.... what a documentary! This is actually better than the Rush documentary that was just released last year - Beyond The Lighted Stage |

Thanks so much for the YouTube links. Was feeling out of the loop and slightly sorry for myself. :) Have stayed up too late, but really enjoyed it. |

I've watched a lot of "stuff" about Queen over the years and I've always been disappointed by the same old cr@p being shown again and again. This show was wonderful. Fresh, interesting and honest. I'm really looking forward to part 2. |
rvl 30.05.2011 01:29 |
Very nice docu. Wonderful concert footage; Houston backstage and especially Hyde Park was great to hear and watch. Pity it did not reveal any footage from USA 1980 tour. I can't imagine there isn't any , when they were so popular at that time. |
Queenman!! 30.05.2011 02:12 |
First: I truly loved the documentary!!!! Highlights for me were the WATC stuff in the studio. The outakes from various clips and the American tour footage. I don't know what to say about a lot the quality of the archive fooatge but you can see it has not been treated well over the years. Really crap quality sometimes. Looking forward to part 2 |
plumrach 30.05.2011 02:57 |
I really enjoyed the doc and looking forward to the 2nd part |

Great stuff in general: - the Bob Harris interviews - SSOR in colour - A new Killer Queen clip - US Tour 1977 snippets (wonderful shots from the crown lightening rig, it has to be said) - New camera angles Houston 1977? Or different show? - WATC recording sessions - The Jazz release party pictures - The 'stone brick' anecdote, gotta love Freddie! - Great Hyde Park footage, including the 'so you think you can stone me and spit in my eye' line, which is missing from the bootleg copies But: Very little coverage of John. Oops, I mean 'the guy who plays bass'...a bit disappointed, if I'm really honest. Viewers may think Queen consisted of only three members. |

I'm sure. The snippets used are from the multi-tracks and they sound ace. @Peter: No problem. It's a great documentary overall :-) link (WATC recording sessions) |

I'd have most liked to have seen more of the behind the scenes 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' video shoot. Couple of really interesting clips of what looked like Freddie having fun at the shoot, but unfortunately as with most documentaries someone else was talking over the actual footage that you'd like to be hearing. Not a massive complaint, enjoyed part one, didn't think I was 'treated' to much I hadn't seen or heard before however. |

Brian definitely has this thing about "rewriting history of writing credits"..he should stop it...cos it shows a lack of class and dignity...Freddie's not here to say "well actually Brian, i did most of It's late" (or some other bollox) <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< There are other interviews where Brian openly admits, that the riff for the Rock section in Bohemian Rhapsody was Freddie's idea. So I think it's very interesting when he gives some information how the songs came to life. Songs of a band always have input from the other members. Giving information about it has nothing to do with a lack of class or whatever..... Thanks to the person putting the BBC documentary on youtube, I enjoyed it and really hope they will bring it out on DVD with some extras. The "We are the Champions" studio session is amazing. The only thing that worries me a bit is the mysterious absence of John Deacon. I hope he is really as well as we all think he should be..... |
john bodega 30.05.2011 07:17 |
Err, John Deacon's been dead for 2 years. |
Rick 30.05.2011 08:02 |
Am I the only one who thinks they should have included more John bits? Brian mentioned that 'the three voices blended so well'. Why not include the interview with John saying that he wished he could sing? My signature has the exact quote. It would have solved the big mystery whether he sang or not for the general public. Not to mention that John was part of Queen as well. Maybe part 2 has more of him... |
philip storey 30.05.2011 10:15 |
Looking foward to tonights 2nd part and concert, it certainly cheers up a wet Bank Holiday.Did not know that Smile had a keyboard player.Pretty good stuff and certainly better than "A Kind Of Magic" which ITV keeps showing. |
Soul Brother 30.05.2011 11:26 |
The obvious confusion was caused by going on about the 3 voices over footage of the whole band (including John) singing collectively into a mic! On the whole, very good though. Quite pleased with it. |
And91 30.05.2011 11:40 |
Probably they call John to give a interview but he refuses to get envolved in any kind of thing about Queen. He prefers to stay away from his past. Maybe he forget everything or he didn't like to remeber these days ¬¬' This don't envolved a revival, Paul Rodgers, WWRY Musical, Freddie film, etc. None of this new things. It's just a doc about the classic and ORIGINAL Queen with the four guys, but he prefers stay away. Sad. |
notimeforlosers 30.05.2011 11:59 |
John is not that dead. This is a very recent picture of him, Veronica and children. |
Rubbersuit 30.05.2011 12:06 |
Just watched (thanks to whomever put it up on youtube). Great general documentary. Remember, it's for the masses... i'm happy they made an effort to find new interesting footage for the queen geeks (like us). Quick question... what was the last song at the end? Sounds very familar but I can't quite place it. Thanks! |
notimeforlosers 30.05.2011 12:09 |
what was the last song at the end? Was It All Worth It from The Miracle. |
dysan 30.05.2011 13:39 |
It was excellent. really looking forward to tonight's part. So glad they didn't have interviews with dickheads out of Muse or Foo Fighters. Or Robbie Williams. |
notimeforlosers 30.05.2011 13:52 |
Ok. This is a really good documentary, with some unseen stuff - can't wait for part 2. But, I have had Champions of the World as my fave doc on Queen so far. I like the way it tells the story. Queen is shown as a 4 piece band, unlike this new one. For the general public, don't you think COTW is a better documentary? Or still, do you think it is a good documentary? |
drmurph 30.05.2011 14:34 |
I think this documentary is a bit more personal than the Champions of the World one. It (If I remember) was a bit more like the more typical documentaries with the stock footage seen in others and the heartstring pulling ending. Although it's been a while since I last watched it. Think I'll dig out the video for another watch. The small snippets of unseen footage prevented me even blinking during Days of our lives in case I missed something. |
qrock 30.05.2011 15:43 |
Saw the documentary last night and I was impressed. Although I like the most parts of other Queen documentaries this one is certainly the most proffesional and it dealt with the sucess, history and music career very well (thank god they had done a decent look back at the discography as in other documentaries albums like Queen II are forgotten about and are overshadowed by Live Aid and Bohemian Rhapsody). My Uncle is massive Rush fan and the other day he showed my the Lighted Stage which was another fantastic retrospective musical film. It's probably slightly better than the Queen documentary so far, however if a little bit more was added to Days of Our Lives it would probably have the edge. I loved the extra shots from music including Somebody to Love and Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Great shots from 1977. Brian talking about his Dad was moving. |
junketerQ2 30.05.2011 16:28 |
Overall was fantastic, especially seeing the "unseen" bits. So a BIG thanks to whoever posted it on youtube - who knows when it will ever get screened here in NZ?! Would love to see an extended version released on DVD at some point. And what's up with no new John interviews? I know he's been retired from the music biz but he spent 20 years of his life in Queen a big chunk of his life so you would think he could have at least given some new interviews about it??? One question for all you Queenie geeks though - during the segment showing the lost SSOR TOTP footage (at Part 1 12.19 onwards for a few seconds) Brian has changed his outfit to a white jacket. Did he do this during filming or has one of the other TOTP performances been edited in? Me thinks he changed during filming as the rest of the band appear the same, but it doesnt quite make sense. |
mickeybrad173 30.05.2011 19:45 |
There is a few surprises in The second part These include unseen clips from promo of Radio Ga Ga and also I Want To Break Free The is also unseen footage when Queen were making Hot Space at Mountain Studios. I did feel that they rushed the ending. That could have been the way it was edited for TV, but it did feel a bit rushed. Hopefully the DVD release should be better and have bits that were missed out in the second part. |
notimeforlosers 30.05.2011 20:32 |
I have the feeling, after watching the two parts, that 2 hours is not enough for a Queen doc. I also felt the final part was a little bit rushed and left out many interesting topics. Queen needs a full 4 hour documentary. |

Regarding SSOR on Top of the Pops footage. Yes it is a mash up all three appearances from the show, so you get clips of all the footage, just like what was shown at the 'Stormtroopers' exhibition in February. Freddie didn't change his costume at all on one particular performance. |

Wonderful documentary. Fantastic early footage I've dreamed of seeing and so sad to see just how ill poor Freddie was near the end. An extended DVD release is a must. Please let us have all this rare unseen footage in full, in the correct aspect ratio and NOW. It's almost 40 years since they have been seen, don't make us wait any longer, some of us might not still be here... |
