Matias Merçeauroix 27.02.2011 16:26 |
I would invite him over to my house so we could watch THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. And then tell him: SEE THAT? WHAT YOU DID TO QUEEN BY ASKING PAUL RODGERS TO SING, IS MUCH WORSE THAN KILLING JESUS. But then again, maybe I'll ask him to sing Opera or Races. |
Michael 27.02.2011 20:19 |
I understand why people feel so strongly about Paul Rodgers singing with Queen. I mean, no one can compare with Freddie. But the way I always viewed the partnership is exactly as it was: Paul Rodgers with Queen (or half of Queen, to be exact). I found that Rodgers put his own spin on the Queen songs and did not try to imitate Freddie. Therefore, I never had a problem with the arrangement. As for the name of the band ("Queen + Paul Rodgers"), I feel that May and Taylor did this strictly for marketing purposes. The general public, at large, does not know who they are or that they were once members of Queen. They pretty much has to use the "Queen" name to guarantee high ticket sales. So I don't think it was any great crime for Brian and Roger to work with Paul - in fact, they put on quite an enjoyable show. If they are to tour again and are in my town, I will certainly be there again. |
Matias Merçeauroix 27.02.2011 21:03 |
I honestly couldn't care less about the name of their projects, it's more about common sense. To me, Queen was escencially Freddie Mercury with (a lot of/some/none) input from the others but I don't give a shit if Brian decides to call himself Queen or Brian May + The Dying Foxes. But you know, to bring back the name and play such a poor part, by recording such a sloppy album. It's sad. It's heartbreaking to me. And Paul Rodgers didn't "put his own spin", he just can't do any other thing other than that awful bluesy feel that he puts on virtually EVERYTHING. Which is certainly not the best idea, anyone would agree if the example was Yngwie Malmsteen replacing Brian May and instead of playing the songs the way they are, starts shredding all the time. Anyone would say DUDE, PLAY THE SONGS LIKE THEY ARE, DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE. And he could do it, because he is a wonderful guitar player, he'd just need a slap or two (?) Paul Rodgers, on the other hand, can't do anything else than his bluesy shit. Which is not bad because it's bluesy, it's bad because he can't pull it off properly either. But it's obvious... |

I've met him twice. The first time in 1998 after a concert of the Another World tour - he signed my ticket. It was the only thing I had with me. The second time, a couple of weeks ago, after the premiere of the WWRY musical in Oslo, he signed my Flash Gordon and A Night at the Opera LP's. I didn't have my collection, only a couple of LP's, but I like them. Got them signed by both Brian May and Roger Taylor. Happy! |

If they don't want to relase the rare tracks because they will not sell as good as yet another greatest hits... then give the tracks away. What do they want them for? People want to listen to them and if you're not gonna get money for them, then don't spend a fucking dime in the production, package or anything. Just give them away, we'll be happy to get them. I'm guessing it's not that simple either but FUCK, what are they gonna do with all that material that will probably never see the light? |

When I knew I had the chance a few weeks back at WWRY in Glasgow, I could have (and really wanted to) take my Red Special guitar......but that meant having to take it to work first, and I didn't really like that idea. I would get him to sign the inner sleeves of my home-made CDs of Opera, Races and Miracle. That is, if I muster enough courage to speak to him!!!! I would faint if I was in his presence. At the British Music Experience in the 'O2 bubble' I saw the Queen exhibit, and it had Freddie's originial Wembley jacket, Roger's drum kit from the early days (with the 'slim' version of the crest, so to speak), and Red Special! With the greenish-grey tremolo! It wasn't a replica. So, as you might expect, I reverently knelt. What I wouldn't give to visit Brian's house in Surrey and ask permission to play one chord on RS and if he would allow me to, Freddie's touring piano. I don't if that's the piano Fred composed Bo Rhap on, but that would be a tremendous bonus if it was! |

It is kinda ironic that Funky Horsie hates "Queen + Paul Rodgers" (not that I like...) and gets so angry at Brian May but still have on his profile the following statement: 21/11/08 - saw Brian May live. Best night of my life. Quite ironic and contradictory, huh?! haha |

As I only had one chance to see him live because I was a little boy when he came to argentina in 1992, I HAD to see him live. I paid for my ticket so I could see him play the songs I like. Not because of Paul Rodgers or The Cosmos Rocks. The guy and his music are two different things. I think he is an idiot but I like his music, what is so contradictory and ironic? To name one example, when he wrote on Kerry Ellis' album: "I've never been more proud of anything I've ever worked on". Really? The same guy who played with Freddie Mercury when he brought The March of the Black Queen to the studio? The same guy who wrote The Prophet's Song and Teo Torriatte? He can be proud of anything he fucking wants but COME ON! You really have to be an idiot to say something like that. And then there's, of course, when he praised Adam Lambert for 'Time for Miracles': "I have to say I was completely blown away ... it's truly sensational. In fact it's so obviously a number one smash, any bookie would be mad to take bets on it. " But then: "I am not kidding. I'm not easily moved to jelly by male vocalists." That "I-KNOW-WHAT-I'M-TALKING-ABOUT" attitude, I completely hated. The same guy who called Paul Rodgers to sing Queen songs... dear God. And the undeniable fact that he's spent so much time writting shit on his soapbox but he doesn't even record a song. He doesn't even write one, we don't get news regarding anything that's musical... It's all the same shit over and over again. He writes, he rants, he saves animals. FUCK, DUDE, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!?! What a waste of talent. |

Fans are always living in the past, comparing each and everything. Artists are living in the "now". When they work on something new they are fully involved and enthusiastic. And everything else doesn't count. That's also the reason, why many can't remember when they did what. So you find quotes like that from many artists like Paul McCartney or David Bowie, being immensely proud on a new album that later turns out to be a flop. If artists were not like that, how could they go on creating new stuff after having a major success with one particular album or a band? |

I found that awfully shocking, because he's not just saying it was great working with Kerry or whatever. He just said that was the best thing he's ever done, basically. And it was also an unnecessary comment, as he had already said a lot of good things a few lines before that. |
Soundfreak 02.03.2011 08:44 |
Yes I think so. John Lennon once told a shocked George Martin, that he would like to re-record many of the Beatles' classics like "Strawberrry Fields" as they were not exactly as he wanted them to be....... Artists are very difficult and sometimes live in a world of their own. They aren't necessarily their own best critics. Which can also be seen when it comes to live albums.....so many great recordings have been officially ruined by overdubs and edits....."Queen" are a good example for that too. All bootlegs are lightyears ahead compared to the "doctored" stuff on "Live killers" or "Live Magic" ....or Montreal....the Rainbow video.... But they don't do it with bad intentions, they have a different approach. They hear certain things in their head and when the recording turns out to be different, they start to change things and lose the magic of the live situation..... |

What a waste of talent. ============================================================================================= What the hell have you been smokin' man? Please tell why saying he's proud of the Ellis album makes him an idiot? Have you maybe taken the wrong interpretation of it? Do you know how he *feels* about the album? If that's how he feels, then that's a personal thing - it doesn't make him an idiot. And what's wrong with liking Adam Lambert? If everyone liked the same stuff, the world would be a boring place! Personally, I can't stand Lambert, but if Brian loves him, that's fine. He's entitled to have a his own taste and opinions. Just because you don't agree doesn't make him an idiot. Who's to say it's not you or I who are the idiots for not liking him? Answer is we're not, as we are entitled to our opinions too. But calling someone an idiot is not an opinion, it's a judgement, and that's two different things. Btw, the "bookies would be mad" line is not him being a "know-all" either. Again, it's his opinion, and if Lambert's vocals move him, fine. People are affected by different things in different ways. Don't like it? Tough! He does! Moving on to the Paul Rodgers thing....again, why does this make him an idiot? Freddie is not the be-all and end-all, you know. And, hard as it may sound, Freddie's dead and gone. Not to be forgotten, but gone all the same. This is the sort of thing that really pisses me off about Queen fans. Sure, Paul Rodgers is no Freddie, but that collaboration provided us with a service that we were all screaming out for. We wanted Queen live, and that set-up provided the means. We got it. We also wanted new material. We got it. And what do you do? Fucking moan and call Brian an idiot. Why? Because you don't like Paul Rodgers? Fuck off. Finally, the soapbox. If you don't like it, don't read it. He doesn't *have* to make music on demand. Not for you, not for me, not for anyone. But especially not for you with that attitude. And he could be doing worse things with his time than saving animals (a very worthy, admirable and commendable thing, btw) - he could be giving a fuck about your whining wee face. Brian's a waste of talent? A man who you've lauded for working with Freddie and writing stuff like Prophet's Song? It doesn't make sense. Folk are right, you are contrary. |

A few jars and tapas. Very happy thanks very much. I have a lot of questions for BHM. Of course he did love, Paul fits right in with Liza or Aretha". or "Kerry Ellis. Wearing a costume that shows off your tits and snatch compliments ones vocal and interpretation skills? Discuss." |
