Meant to post this the other day, but forgot for a bit. Was a St. Pat's day article.
Ulster Unionists turn to Flash Harry for votes
The Ulster Unionist Party, once the powerful voice of pro-British activism in Northern Ireland, has turned to Freddy Mercury impersonator Flash Harry to improve its political standing.
Dublin, Ireland
Politics and popular culture often make for uncomfortable partners. But the Ulster Unionists – whose politics and penchant for the color orange are not exactly popular in much of Ireland on St. Patrick's Day – are reaching out for a little rock-and-roll pizazz to improve their chances at the polls in Northern Ireland. Yeah, I don't know. I can't get far enough past the idea of tribute acts in general to comment objectively on any given one. They all sound iffy to me. I can say that in the clip embedded in the article he didn't seem to be tarted up in some Freddie outfit, which I though was a point in his favour.
The first and pretty much only thought I had on reading the piece was that Freddie himself was so pointedly apolitical that the whole thing didn't quite fit.
i dont think that queenzone is a suitable place to discuss politics.
irish politcs have always been a touchy subject here in the uk,and i think this post or discusion should not continue.
it could lead to nasty comments about why flash freddie is or is not supporting one or the other of the political devide.
Reading another source on the BBC made it clearer that this guy wasn't just singing, he's running for political office. So my misread - sorry. Didn't intend to even hint at a political discussion. Either way, perhaps the thread was insensitive and ill advised. Mea culpa.
I beg to disagree, David. QZ is a place to discuss anything you want. The idea that a Freddie impersonator supports a political party or even runs for office is a "cries for fatty comments" issue. About the article - I think all a Freddie impersonator does is sing Freddie songs (while dressed like Freddie or not). He does not represent gay people, he does not represent British citizens with immigrant background and certainly he does not represent Zoroastrians. Therefore the article is close to bizzarre imo.I know quite a lot of people who play Queen music - they usually are not gay, immigrants or Parsis:-) Neither do they have a PhD in astronomy, wear clogs, have six kids or a son who plays the drums...
